Welcome to the live coverage of the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia. Today we are in the mountains again with another tough stage from Chieti to San Giacomo. Run over 190 kilometres, the stage features a couple of major climbs, incluing the 1334m climb of the Ceppo pass, which comes at km 151. Following this is the 22 kilometre climb up to the finish in San Giacomo - not a steep climb as it "only" gains 620m in altitude. However it will be enough to test the legs at the end of a long stage.
160 riders started today's stage, meaning that we've lost 38 so far in the Giro.
14:45 CEST - 100 km/90 km to go
An update on the race: After 44 kilometres, Dutchman Marc Lotz (Rabobank) attacked and was allowed to get clear by the peloton. He has steadily built up a lead which is now 9'35 with 90 kilometres to go. However now he faces the toughest part of the stage with a lot of climbing to come.
15:00 CEST - 109 km/81 km to go
Lotz, not surprisingly, took first place in the Intergiro sprint at Torricella Sicura, and he was followed by Massimo Strazzer (Phonak) who was over 9 minutes behind, then Biagio Conte (Saeco) was third.
Five riders: Daniele De Paoli (Alessio), Hernan Dario Munoz (Selle Italia), Hector Mesa Mesa (Formaggi), Daniele Righi (Index-Alexia) and Thorwald Veneberg (Rabobank) have set off in pursuit of Lotz as the the starts to go up.
Righi doesn't last long and goes back to the peloton, which is 20 seconds behind these riders.
15:13 CEST - 120 km/70 km to go
Hector Mesa Mesa goes back to the peloton, leaving three riders (Munoz, De Paoli and Veneberg) trying to close an 8 minute gap to Rabobank's Marc Lotz, who attacked after 44 km and has been away ever since.
The peloton is only 25 seconds behind the three men chasing.
15:28 CEST - 130 km/60 km to go
There are now seven chasers, who are bringing the gap down to lone leader Marc Lotz (Rabobank) to 6'45.
Eddy Mazzoleni (Tacconi), Cristian Moreni and Daniele de Paoli (Alessio), Hernan Dario Munoz (Selle Italia), David Cioni (Mapei), Luis Laverde (Formaggi Trentini) and Juan J De Los Angeles (Kelme) are the seven, with a 35 second gap back to the peloton.
15:38 CEST - 136 km/54 km to go
Marc Lotz is visibly suffering on this long climb to Ceppo. He is now just 5'35 in front of the group of seven chasers, who are working hard to stay ahead of the peloton.
The main group is being led by CSC-Tiscali, who realise that Mazzoleni (in the chasing group) is a threat to Tyler Hamilton on GC. Hamilton is 13th @ 4'26, while Mazzoleni is 14th @ 4'43. This takes the pressure off Fassa Bortolo/Casagrande, setting things up for a Casagrande attackon the last climb.
The peloton is really thinning down now. Pantani is off the back with a teammate, and will lose a lot of time again today. He has been complaining of bronchitis in the fast few days.
15:49 CEST - 142 km/48 km to go
The chasing group is starting to fragment on this 1330m climb, with another 10 kilometres to go until the summit. The tenacious Marc Lotz (Rabobank) leads Eddy Mazzoleni, Juan J De Los Angeles, Luis Laverde, and David Cioni by 4'10, with the peloton with the maglia rosa Jens Heppner now closing in on them.
The tempo setting is being done by Tyler Hamilton's CSC-Tiscali team. If Tyler is feeling a little recovered from his injuries, a good ride today should set things up for him to move well up on GC in tomorrow's Numana time trial.
16:00 CEST - 149 km/41 km to go
With two kilometres to the top of the Ceppo climb, it's Marc Lotz (Rabobank) still out in front with a 4'20 advantage on a group of four riders (Mazzoleni, Juan J De Los Angeles, Luis Laverde and David Cioni), who in turn have a 10 second gap to the CSC-Tiscali led peloton. Watch out for Fassa Bortolo's Wladimir Belli and Francesco Casagrande today, who will surely try something on the final climb. All of the GC riders are in the peloton, although Yaroslav Popovych (6th) is suffering a bit.
16:07 CEST - 151 km/39 km to go
Marc Lotz is first to the Cat. 2 GPM of Ceppo, having lost around 6 minutes of his lead on this long climb. He gets a big cheer from the crowd at the top and can look forward to the descent now.
Castelblanco has accelerated out of the now "compact" peloton to take the mountain points for second place, 2'17 behind Lotz. The main group led by CSC containing the maglia rosa follows at 10 seconds. Casagrande takes third place in the GPM.
16:15 CEST - 157 km/33 km to go
Lampre's Massimo Codol has crashed on the decsent, hitting one of the safefy barriers. The doctor takes a quick look at him to see if he has broken anything. Codol is obviously in a bit of pain and it could be a broken rib.
Codol gets back on the bike and continues the stage.
16:20 CEST - 162 km/28 km to go
Telekom's Matthias Kessler and CSC's Michael Rasmussen have attacked off the front of the peloton on the descent. They are chasing Marc Lotz, who is around 2 minutes in front. The maglia rosa group is 15 seconds behind the chasing pair.
16:28 CEST - 167 km/23 km to go
Marc Lotz has not lost any time (the reverse in fact) on this descent, as he reaches the bottom with a 3'02 gap to the peloton. In between, Dane Michael Rasmussen (CSC-Tiscali) and German Matthias Kessler (Telekom) are chasing, 2'32 behind.
The peloton is swelling again as dropped riders get back on. One of those was Dario Frigo, who may not be having a good day today.
16:34 CEST - 170 km/20 km to go
Lotz has found another set of legs on the descent it seems, as his lead to the gruppo maglia rosa is now nearly 4 minutes again. But he's probably going to run out of steam on this climb.
Rasmussen and Kessler (not Grabsch) are at 2'20. Mariano Piccoli (Lampre) and Oscar Pererio (Phonak) are reported to be at 3'15.
16:41 CEST - 178 km/12 km to go
12 kilometres, all uphill to go for Marc Lotz, who's been out there since kilometre 44. He can at least enjoy good weather conditions, as the sun is shining brightly today.
In pursuit are Michael Rasmussen and Matthias Kessler (at 2'24), then Mariano Piccoli and Oscar Pererio (at 2'50), then Jens Heppner's group at 3'48.
16:47 CEST - 180 km/10 km to go
Rasmussen gets off the bike - looks like cramps. He loses Kessler, who will try and catch Lotz on his own.
Popovych is dropped from the maglia rosa group again.
16:51 CEST - 182 km/8 km to go
Marc Lotz is still away, but it will be incredible if he lasts to the finish in the lead. Matthias Kessler is chasing him at 52 seconds, with Oscar Pererio (Phonak) at 1'24, and the CSC led peloton at 1'33.
Casagrande, Hamilton, Belli, Evans, Tonkov, Verbrugghe and Boogerd are all in the peloton.
16:56 CEST - 184 km/6 km to go
Kessler is climbing well as he closes in on Lotz, who is doing a remarkable job although the tougest part of the climb is still to come. Dario Cioni (Mapei) attacks from the peloton, as Pereiro is reabsorbed.
Cioni catches Kessler very quickly and goes straight past.
16:58 CEST - 185 km/5 km to go
Tonkov (Lampre) counters from the peloton as Cioni is just about on Lotz's wheel. Addy Engels (Rabobank) goes with Tonkov, and Kessler falls back to the peloton.
17:02 CEST - 187 km/3 km to go
Cioni hits the toughest part of the climb as Casagrande starts to accelerate in the peloton. He has Evans on his wheel. Perez Cuapio, Hamilton.
Jens Heppner is in a bit of trouble, but may still keep his jersey.
Tonkov catches Cioni on a 15% section. There are two leaders, but the peloton is coming.
Evans and Perez Cuapio catch Tonkov and Cioni with 3 km to go.
17:04 CEST - 188 km/2 km to go
Evans and Perez Cuapio lead the race, with Pavel Tonkov following at a short distance. Ivan Gotti attacks from the peloton, forcing an immediate reaction from Belli.
That leads to a counter attack from Casagrande, who gets Pellizzotti on his wheel. Frigo tries to close the gap and succeeds.
The 15 man peloton regroups, and Aitor Gonzalez counters in pursuit of Evans and Cuapio
17:07 CEST - 189 km/1 km to go
Perez Cuapio attacks evans with just under two km to go. Evans is on his own, with Aitor Gonzalez in pursuit. The Kelme rider blows as Franco Pellizzotti and Frigo counter.
Casagrande has to do all the work in the peloton to catch Pellizzotti and Frigo, and he does.
Gotti goes with 1km to go.
17:09 CEST - 190 km/0 km to go
Julio Alberto Perez Cuapio negotiates the final couple of corners to get a well deserved Giro d'Italia stage win. The Mexican is very very happy.
Just behind him, Cadel Evans takes a very fine second place, which may move him up on GC. This is a very tough finish.
Frigo sprints in for third, just ahead of Casagrande.
Good news for Jens Heppner - he loses only 1'29 to Perez Cuapio, and keeps his maglia rosa for another day.
