Hobart Wheelers Summer Criterium Series

December 1, 2003

Series off to flying start

The Hobart Wheelers Summer Criterium Series began on Monday night at the driver training area of the Tasmania Police Academy at Rokeby. A good field turned up to contest this the first race in the series. The race course is a fairly small 700m loop around a skidpan in the centre, and is closed to traffic. Being on the river it is always windy, tonight being no exception with a stiff headwind up the home straight.

The race started and the pace was fairly relaxed for the first couple of laps before Jai Crawford attacked to start the race in earnest. Slowly the group was whittled down until there were only four left - Steve Rossendell, Jai Crawford, Steve Price and Daniel Furmston. The pace stayed high, and the group lapped the field. Gradually Daniel dropped off the back until there were only three. Those three caught a small group which had got together, and the pace slowed slightly. Andrew Hanigan and Simon van der Aa decided they didn't want to stay lapped with ten minutes to go, and so took off to try and get a lap back, with the leaders staying in the group. Andrew and Simon got a lap back with three to go, but in the meantime Daniel had clawed his way back onto the group and shortly after Andrew and Simon got back on he attacked. Some confusion followed, with the leaders not being sure whether he was on the lead lap or not (he was), with the end result being that Daniel won the race by a nose from a flying finish by pursuiter Rossendell, with Steve and Jai rounding out the other places.

Many thanks to Tasmania Police for the use of the venue - it's great to be able to race on a good road surface with zero traffic worries.
