Malouf takes his first B-grade race

Perfect weather greeted the large fields in tonight’s criteriums, sunny, warm and a tail wind finish for the sprinters. Even though there were attempts by groups of three to five riders to break away, conditions were such the bunch could just roll around and pick them up at their leisure. In E grade after his first two rides to regulate his breathing, Dave Ogden found his sprinting form to take the (pizza) win from Peter Winter, both will soon find out the pace in D grade. In D grade, new comer Paul Doecke won the sprint finish over the big fella Russell Hodson who had some anxious moments trying to get around Doecke in the finish but didn’t quite get there due to the well timed hook. The C grade bunch sprint was won by a flying Simon Buzacott, who now has two out of two and will now enjoy testing himself in B grade. The newest sprinting sensation is the winner of B grade Cameron Malouf, never having raced before he won C grade in his first race, second in his second, moved into B grade and easily won that sprint. Keep an eye on this guy. Not to forget second in B grade was a recent under 17 junior Russell Gill. In A grade after a successful start to his criterium season Pat Bruce had quite a nasty fall when he lost traction from his front wheel and went down on a bend, he was later taken to hospital. Again the unstoppable SASI rider Mat Rex easily won the sprint with his speed and power, but trying to take it to him were a couple of veteran riders in Alan Gill second and James Russell third in the large group of A graders. It might pay for the newer riders to watch how these masters do it and learn by example. Don’t forget the racing this Sunday at Whitmore Square, 9.00am start.
