Australian Stephen Wooldridge (Australian National Track Endurance) won the Tour of Siam's fifth stage after outsprinting Japan's Miyazawa Takashi (Team Nippo) and Hong Kong rider Lam Kai Tsun for the victory. The GC turned on its head as the contenders made a big mistake and let two good GC-placed riders in the break. After the 10-man front group arrived home two minutes ahead of the main bunch, it meant that Doi Yukihiro (Skil Shimano) moved to second overall and 18 year-old Will Ford (Australian National Track Endurance) third on GC.

The stage start was very hectic as everybody wanted to get involved in the break. After 50km a group of seven - including Ford, who was 15th this morning on GC - got clear, later joined by another four riders. The front group worked very well together and in the sprint finish Wooldridge - who is a current Olympic and World Champion on the track - played it cool and got the win easily by two bike lengths. Giant Asia and Jai Crawford were busy all day covering kamikaze-style breakaway attempts from Koji Fukushima and consequently allowed the break too big an advantage, meaning that Crawford maintained his lead by only 26 seconds and Fukushima dropped back to fourth place overall.

How it unfolded

After two days the caravan left the beautiful surroundings of the Wachiralongkorn Dam and headed 170km to Kanchanaburi. Hot tropical weather was back after a few cooler days and the wind was blowing all day, which made for a hard stage even if it didn't appear so on paper.

In the beginning, many riders wanted to get into a break, so even in the strong wind the field covered 50km in the first hour. After the first intermediate sprint, a group of seven went clear and the peloton took it a bit easier after the very intensive start. It looked like the Japanese weren't tired enough from the previous day's hard work, as they had two in the front group which included Miyazawa Takashi and Arashiro Yukiya (Team Nippo), Lakawata Jatupoom (Thai Army), Prajak Mahawong (Siam Bara), Nederlof Lex (Ruiter-Dakapellen), two-time Tour de France finisher Nathan Dahlberg (Altipower) and young Australian Will Ford (Australian National Track Endurance). The latter was the best placed overall, 2:59 down. The gap started to grow and at the second sprint after 85 kilometres - which was won by Miyazawa ahead of Netherlof and Dahlberg - they had three minutes on the bunch.

Prior to the race start, Koji Fukushima told Cyclingnews, "I'm ready to attack" and true to his word, Fukushima tried to attack the peloton all day, putting in some huge efforts to get away and made life hard for everybody in the race. Yellow jersey wearer Jai Crawford showed great skills and experience as he stayed on the Japanese rider's wheel for the entire stage. The other Giant Asia riders did a good job on the front, supporting their leader and covering all the dangerous breakaway attempts in the first 100km.

With the kilometres ticking down, three more riders attacked the peloton, Doi Yukihiro, Hirose Yoshimasa (Skil Shimano) and eventual stage winner Wooldridge. As Yukihiro was 12th placed on GC, the peloton needed to be careful and not let them get too far away. At this time, Dahlberg, Ford and the Thai Navy rider were dropped from the front so the chasers formed a six man group with them and did long hard turns to bring back the remaining four riders in front. In the peloton, it was full gas again in the strong side wind as the Fukushima brothers tried to split the race apart; they even used the commissaires' motorbikes for their escapes which made for some disagreement in the peloton.

Thirty kilometres from the finish, the lead group still had a two minute-advantage as the Marco Polo team allied with Giant Asia on the front and continued to chase strongly. The Marco Polo boys were hoping to collect a stage win, as Giant Asia had to defend its position in the general classification. Up front, the break was still cooperating well, nobody attempting to jump away allowing the leaders to maintain their two-minute advantage to the finish. Even the work of the two Nippo riders was unexpected as their leader was in difficulties to maintain his position in GC because Yukuhiro and Ford were in the lead group.

As the leaders neared the finish, it was clear that today's win would be decided between the front group of riders. Wooldridge easily outsprinted the others and he even had some time to put his left hand to his heart before crossing the line infront of more than 1000 Thai children. As the peloton approached the finish line there was a big crash involving a large group of riders, including the orange jersey wearer Soepenberg who lost his jersey because of it.

Today's stage result and the miscalculated tactics of the teams led to Japanese rider Doi Yukihiro moving up to second overall and 18 year-old Will Ford into third as Koji Fukushima dropped back to fourth and Crawford held on to yellow by 26 seconds. After a very hard and exhausting stage, Crawford only needs to survive one more day to become the overall winner of the race, as tomorrow's 186 km stage will be the last one of this year's Tour of Siam.

Said Crawford after today's stage: "Today was a very hard day, I'm really tired. The team did a great job today, my work was only to stay on Koji's wheel. He attacked so many times, it was not easy follow him on the flat as I weigh only 58kg. We had to work hard all day long even in the end, because there were two dangerous riders in the break. Now I still have the jersey and I think I can keep it until the end of the race, but it will be not easy tomorrow."

Miyazawa explained Team Nippo's tactics, saying, "Our plan today was to put me and one other teammate in the break," he said. "My main option was collecting points in the points jersey classification, it worked well, so in the end I was awarded with the orange jersey. Back in the bunch Giant Asia were leading the chase as Koji and Shinichi tried to break their work and jump away. It was planned that if they can break away we will stop working in the front and wait for them, so we could have gone for the leaders jersey. It was a bit risky and maybe in the end we made a mistake, but our director told us to continue working in the front group. I'm happy because of the points jersey and tomorrow we will try again."
