As Jai Crawford (Giant A.R.T) said after the second stage, the queen stage of this year's Tour of Siam was going to be "The Day" for his team. He was true to his word and put in a brave attack at the beginning of the race, with his teammate Ghader Mizbhani by his side. Maybe nobody expected what later happened in the stage, as the duo spent the whole day in the front on the very challenging 189km hilly course. At the end, they collected the stage win and the yellow jersey for their team. Cycling fans saw an impressive performance amongst the background of mangrove forest, jungle rivers, and high mountain passes.

Former race leader Koji Fukushima, who's Nippo Maitan team tried everything, failed to defend the leader's jersey. He arrived at the finish in the 18 man strong main group almost two minutes after the winning duo.

How if unfolded

Cloudy weather and temperatures around 26 degrees woke up the riders in the beautiful golf course resort near the Wachiralongkorn Dam. Everybody looked a little nervous at the breakfast. It was clear that today's stage, with three KOMs, was going to be the hardest day of this race. The day started with short, rolling hills, and the first group, with about 20 riders, got clear at kilometer 10. Team Nippo Maitan had two riders on the front, so they let the break go. As the riders closed to the first KOM of the day, Crawford attacked the break, with his teammate, Mizhbani on his wheel and Sirous Hashemzadeh (Azad University). Mizhbani took the points in the mountain sprint at kilometer 23. At the top, they had a 30 second advantage on the chase group and around one minute on the main bunch.

At this point, nobody thought that such an early break could stay away on today's course, so the peloton took it easy and the gap to the front trio began to grow, while the other riders from the original break were reeled slowly in by the bunch. The course wound all day through beautiful Thai landscape, with its forested jungle rivers by the roadside and a large lake on the other side of the dam. However, riders didn't have too much time to look around because the route was like a rollercoaster.

After the first intermediate sprint, a five rider group took up chase on the leaders, but their effort ended without too much luck.

The real difficulties started after kilometer 70, especially two kilometers before the day's second KOM, where the road hit a 20% plus gradient. Riders started suffering and some couldn't ride up the climb Local fans sprinkled them with cool water and tried to push them further on the hill. It was a great scene in the tropical countryside with its steep "walls" like those of the early European spring classics.

At the first categorized climb, Mizhbani took the points again, while the five-man chase group blew apart. The peloton was already five minutes behind. After a very fast descent, where riders reached 100 km/h on the downhill, the race headed to the Myanmar border through very poor countryside . At 90km, they arrived at the Three Pagodas Pass for a U-turn, which meant the riders reached the halfway point of the stage. The three little pagodas are memorials of an important routing of the troops during a war from the Ayutthaya period. It also marks the rugged Thai-Myanmar border and is the site of a small but thriving border market.

At this point, the three leaders still had over four minutes, but the peloton worked to catch the five chasers. After the U-turn, it was the same route back to the finish, so it meant some more very hard climbing in the heat. On the way back, the main climb strung out the field once again as the GC contenders increased the speed and reduced the yellow jersey group to only 20 riders.

Fukushima was left without teammates--he Nippo guys were dropping back after the previous days of hard work. In the front, Hashemzadeh dropped from the break, so Crawford and Mizhbani were left to their own resources.

At 146km, the leading duo reached today's last KOM where they had 38km to go and three minutes advantage. The yellow jersey group started to attacked each other and there was no cooperation for the chase. The Giant Asia duo started to tire, and the gap began to decrease. It was all or nothing for them, when 15km from the finish they had 1 minute and 28 seconds and then still a minute's gap at the 10km mark. The leaders both clenched their teeth and swapped turns on the front, while a brief rainshower cooled them slightly.

Nearing the finish, the duo had increased their lead, so they arrived more calmly to the finish, where Mizhbani took the stage win and Crawford the yellow jersey. Third place went to Pol Nabban from Marco Polo Team, who arrived 1:46 back and five seconds in front of the 18 man yellow jersey group.

After the stag, the 23-year-old Australian race leader talked with emotion about his stage. "It's amazing, I really don't believe that we did this. When I attacked at the beginning of the stage, I just went for the KOM points. A bit later on, my teammate Mizhbani arrived to the front group, so we put the pressure on before the first KOM and only one rider could stayed with us.

"As the gap began to grow, I still didn't think about the jellow jersey. On the way back to the finish, we lost the Iranian rider after the first category climb, but we still kept going hard with Mizhbani. In the last 10km I started to believe that we could win this stage so tried to bring out all my remained energy and gave 110%.

"In the end, I let the stage win for my teammate, because I knew that I will get the race leader's jersey. The last few years were bad for me in cycling, I had difficulties with previous teams and had a bad last year, so I could only compete in two or three races in 2006. I just joined the Giant Asia team, and this is my first race with them, so it's very nice to have such a great results at the beginning.

"I think the team Nippo worked too hard in the previous days, that's why they lost today. My team is very strong, so I think I can keep the jellow jersey until the end of the race. We have a comfortable situation as Mizhbani is third now in overall, but we really have to be careful int he two remaining stages"

Koji Fukushima, after arriving almost two minutes behind the winner, gestured at the finish to congratulate Crawford.

"In the past few days, my team worked very hard to control the race, so today we payed for it," said Fukushima. "I lost one of my teammates early on the stage and all the others later on. Congratulations to the Giant Asia boys, they rode a great race today. Of course, I will not give up the fight for the yellow jersey, now some other teams have to control the race so we could rest a bit."

Giant Asia should be happy with today's results. Not only did they earn the lead, but Mizhbani moved into third place on the GC. They have strong lead in the mountains and in the team classification, so now they must simply defend their position for two more days.

Tomorrow the caravan heads back to Kanchanaburi.
