Gold Coast Goldstars Criterium

Leggera August 3, 2003

National Juniors vs Coasties

By Tim Francis

The recently selected National Road Junior U/19 squad paid a visit to the Goldstars monthly Criterium on the Gold Coast this morning. This coincided with a sponsorship arrangement with Leggera Bikes International which saw some well earned extra prizemoney up for grabs.

The Mens A grade field contained all 6 of the Juniors along with some of the strongest Coasties, many of whom were backing up from the 150km Cunningham Classic run on Saturday. The race got off to a cracking start thanks to the efforts of "Big Red" (Kane Oakley) who won the Cunningham and also leads the Queensland Velo series. Thanks to him and a few others the race was soon blown apart. The juniors held their own, often dictating terms to their older counterparts.

A break of 8 went away but dwindled down to 4 with Jayson Austin, Jamie Seip, Simon Clarke & Sam Lee eventually lapping the field. Kane Oakley decided to gain his lap back which he did and caught all but 2 riders who went off the front - they were Simon Clarke and Ashley Gowie who was a lap down. Simon won the race from Jamie Seip and Jayson Austin 3rd.

B grade was also a tough run event and also had 3 riders lap the field - Geoff Willmott, Luke Lucas and Geoff "ocker" Skaines and yes there is life left in Ocker's legs. He won the sprint form Willmott and Lucas 3rd. The race also had the U/19 Womens team competing and Katie Nichols, Stephanie Williams and Candice Sullivan showed that they had plenty off legs to drive the chasing bunch along. Katie showed her sprinting form to get 2nd in the bunch sprint to take out 5th place.

C grade was the largest field of the day which also had a break away of 2 riders, Andre Bondeson and Frank Dilonardo. The pair broke away after 20 minutes and held on right through to the end with Frank picking up the sprint prime along the way. Andre was able to cross the line narrowly in front of Frank. 3rd place went to Ian Waymouth. 1st women was Ros Powley.

The field of 18 D graders contained 6 women competitors, all from the Goldstars Club. A generous donation from a member saw these riders competing for separate prizemoney. But that didn't seem to phase Julie Barnett who was overall winner with Ivan Turkovic and Vince Nucifora in 3rd. Janine Parkin was 1st unplaced woman, followed by Lisa Drew and Lisa Gray.

A small junior field of 3 assembled at the line. The shortage of numbers was due to a junior carnival being held in Brisbane. Mitchell Bastock, Troy Berman and Matthew Willmott battled it out for placings through their 15 minute race with Troy breaking away to take the race win, followed by Mitchell and Matthew.

The Goldstars would like to thank Paul Farrell from Leggera Bikes International for his generous sponsorship of today's race. Please visit his website at www.leggerabikes.com. We would also like to thank Warren McDonald and Liz Hepple for including this race in their squad's preparations for the World Junior Championships.
