Cyclingnews Verdict

The defining feature of the Fizik Tempo Powerstrap R5 is the velcro closure system borrowed from the much more expensive Powerstrap R2. It's fast and comfortable plus easy to adjust while riding. It's also worlds better than what you tend to get on low end shoes with single BOA systems. This is a standout shoe and one of the least expensive available options.

Pros

  • +

    Infinitely-adjustable Fizik Powerstrap closure system

  • +

    Stiff carbon-reinforced nylon outsole

  • +

    High-quality synthetic upper

  • +

    Reasonably lightweight for the price

  • +

    High quality insole

Cons

  • -

    Lacks ventilation through the sole

  • -

    No adjustment of cleat position

Design and aestheticsThere are some shoes with truly gorgeous aesthetics and these aren’t one of them. Instead it’s very functional but not bad at all.8/10
ComfortSome shoes are better able to handle swelling on long rides but What Fizik has delivered is quite impressive.8/10
PerformanceIf you really start pushing hard in races you’ll find the sole lacking. As good as it is, it’s still a nylon composite. 8/10
WeightAnother place where the price point comes through is here in the weight. Although it’s better than some competition, it’s not as good as higher priced shoes.8/10
ValueEven at MSRP you get a ton of value for your money. On top of that, these are almost always available at a discount.10/10
