Friday Night Winter Track Racing, week 6

Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome, Sydney, June 21, 2002

Strong racing as road riders turn trackie

Rider numbers were expected to be down on Week 6 as England and Brazil were clashing in their much-publicised World Cup soccer match. This was not to be as 60 riders lined up for an exhilarating night of track racing at the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome. Maximum race fields entered for the Men's 1, 2, & 3 divisions with two Women's divisions.

Tanya Newton (Bicisport) now leads the Women Division 1 section scoring maximum points to take her tally to 155 points. Rebecca Borgo (Illawarra) and Sarah White (Ireland) were in great form whilst Jackie Kedja (Illawarra) continues to improve following a long run of illness and injury. Sophie Cape (St George) is the big improver in Division 2 Women's showing good speed and increasing endurance to take maximum points on the night. Eye-catching performances from Amanda Whiteman (Bicisport), Kylie Spencer (Illawarra) and Angela Keys (Lidcombe) ensured close finishes were the order of the night in the scratch and the increasingly popular Italian Pursuit teams race.

A full field of 18 contested the Men's Division 1 events. With established roadies Campbell Kerr (Sutherland Shire), Peter Jones (Illawarra) and World Masters medallist Robert Upton (Harlequin) combining with our regular Friday Night Winter Track Racing endurance stars, Justin Quin, Peter Cascadden, Paul McDonald and Stuart Millar from the Bicisport Cycle Club the sprinters knew they were in for a torrid night of racing. Each of the four races were run at high speed with attack after attack by the endurance riders unsettling the more fancied sprinters. It wasn't long before the high speed took its toll on riders such as Shaun Hopkins, Alex Sommer and David Browne each being prolific point scorers over recent weeks. Steve Fitzpatrick (St George) continued to show his class as one of NSW's top endurance track riders winning sufficient points to retain a comfortable position as series points leader.

Paul Bayley (Bankstown) made a return to FNWTR. Although relegated from Division 1 to Division 2 based on the cumulative points system, Paul was determined to make this a short stay, winning as many races as he could to regain redemption to Division 1. Wins in the scratch race, Italian Pursuit teams event and a second in the point's race earned Paul 27 points for the night. Glenn Trudgett (Parramatta) a former track international representative made his debut from retirement and showed glimpses of speed that will hopefully see him become a serious contender in open track racing come the 2002/2003 Summer Track season. David South (Waratah Vets), Jeff Smith (Penrith Panthers) and Mick Kedja (Illawarra) showed good form and tactics to figure prominently in each of their races.

Another top quality field faced the starter in the Men's division 3 category. With a great duel being fought out between John Buckton (Randwick Botany), Clay Batt (St George) and Hugh Gray (Waratah Vets). John Buckton reigned supreme showing excellent top end speed to narrowly win 3 of the 4 events on offer going down to Clay Batt in the final points race. Mick Leach (Liverpool Leppington) scored an impressive 20 points enjoying his best night on the track.

Next Friday night 28/6, will see the return of our Canberra Women's squad who are valuable supporters of FNWTR. The riders will stay in Sydney overnight to partake in an organised sprint training camp being conducted from 9.00am on Saturday morning at the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome to be run by Glenn Doney of Cycling Australia and Kevin Young Cycling NSW.

All budding sprinters are invited to register their interest with Kevin Young at Cycling NSW on tel. 9738 5850 and come along on Saturday morning to partake in the session. Cost will be $10 to cover track hire. Numbers will be limited to 20 riders; therefore riders wishing to attend the session should book in early to ensure a place.
