Sizzling night of track racing caps off Summer of Cycling

Canberra raider wins signature event

After four days of rain interruptions, the weather god finally cooperated long enough to allow a full program of racing on the final night of Queensland's Summer of Cycling track carnival.

And again, it was the 'Canberra Raiders' who grabbed the spoils, with one of the cyclists of the carnival, Kial Stewart taking the honours in the signature event, the ten mile, fifty lap Jack Newitt Memorial scratch race.

"My legs, my feet are numb, got my sprint shoes on, hands are gone, legs are gone, I'm not made for fifty laps," the nuggety track sprinter said of his victory over the stayers in the feature race. "Great lead out by my brother (Joel Stewart)."

Many of the contenders in the feature race were left wondering how they could match the standover tactics of the Canberra cartel which has dominated the Summer of Cycling. A brave attack with one mile to go by Joel Lewis of the Kangaroo Point club, one of the few occasions when the A.C.T. riders where threatened.

"It was a little bit early but I just saw the opportunity," Lewis told Cyclingnews. "I thought I might as well take it."

Lewis was reeled in with two laps to go, setting the scene for a Canberra quinella, with Kial Stewart and Daniel Ellis finishing one-two. "I was full of pain, fifty laps is a long way, especially for a sprinter," Stewart said of his final lap effort. "They did the sprinters a favour by keeping the hand brake on most of the way."

The women's scratch race brought together a small but competitive field, with Rockhampton's Alex Bright picking up the first of her two wins for the night. The seasoned sprinter managed to shake Rockhampton team-mate Anouska Edwards and Balmoral's Courtney Le Lay off her wheel in the final lap. The victory a confidence booster heading into the Queensland state titles.

"It was a bit tough with only five of us in the race and Anouska tried to keep the speed up a lot and I sort of rolled through fairly quickly as well," Bright revealed post-race. "It's always good to see Rocky get up whether its myself or any other riders."

Junior talent on show

There was no shortage of talent on show in the junior program, which kicked off the final day of the Summer of Cycling Carnival. Once again, it was Brodie Stewart of the Balmoral club in Brisbane who gave the crowd plenty to cheer about.

Still just thirteen years of age and already a national club champion on the road in the under 15 division (time trial event), Stewart made short work of the Under 15 girls 8 lap scratch race, along with the points event. A taste of things to come perhaps, for the national track championships in 2006.

"I want to perform well at nationals which I'm training for," the Brisbane junior told Cyclingnews. "I'm going to really push myself in these races so I can get ready with the nationals coming up.

Perhaps the biggest decision for the Balmoral girl who trains with the Hitachi racing squad, is whether to focus for the future on the track or road? "Well I haven't decided whether I want to be a road or a track rider," Brodie told Cyclingnews. "I'd like to go the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics and the women's Tour of Italy."

Another young cyclist dreaming of a future as a professional road cyclist is Brisbane under 17 Sean Caskey. He too is sure to face some tough decisions, especially with his current form on the track, which included victories in the scratch race and points events on the final day of the Summer of Cycling carnival.

"Lately I've been sprinting pretty fast and all that strength has come up so I'm going pretty well right now," Caskey said.

And of his immediate goals? "Short term this year, get a gold at nationals."
