Nothing is better than a calm, warm, and pleasant Sunday afternoon with a beer in hand, a lawn chair, and the time to watch an exciting bike race. That was exactly the pleasure spectators were treated to in Fort Collins, CO, on Sunday, June 8. New Belgium Brewery provided the beer, a host of other vendors supplied interesting products for the audience to sample including Power Bar and Trek Drink. Trek/VW team manager and race promoter, Jim Dunlap, and volunteers from Fort Collins Cycling and Racing Club provided the race. The regional weather patterns provided the calm pleasant warmth, and most people just brought their own lawn chairs. In addition to the race, the volunteers also provided 35 and 50-mile recreational rides.

Included among the interesting events of the day was a New Belgium fat tire cruiser bike race, with New Belgium providing their special personalized Cruiser Bikes for the event. There were twenty-five bikes in the race with twenty-five non-bike racers going hard at it. No wonder there was a crash in the first fifteen feet of the race! Local businesses entering this event were required to make a $250 contribution to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Rio Grande Restaurant rider Thad Stocker won this 2-lap event and Steve Owens finished second. "I thought I had the race won, but he (Stocker) just came flying by out of nowhere. It's really hard to draft on a cruiser bike," said Owens.

110 riders lined the field of the 90-minute Pro 1-2 men's race. The 5-corner course had been designated as the Colorado State Criterium Championships, which made the stakes high and the competitors relentless as a result. Included among those competitors were recent Athens Twilight Criterium winner Dan Schmatz, the current US Collegiate Criterium Champion, TT specialist Colby Pearce, former US Pro champion and current Trek/VW rider Eddy Gragus, and the rest of the powerful Trek/VW Colorado team.

The race started out aggressively with five breakaways getting away and then quickly caught; it became evident that the field was hot and ready. The anxious crowd of riders was not about to let just any move get away, despite the numerous primes provided by both the sponsors and the crowd. A breakaway with Trek/VW rider Jim Copeland, Vitamin Cottage rider Christian McCarthy, and Jamba Juice rider Andrew Graham was the longest lasting of the day, managing to stay clear for five laps. For the remainder of the race, teams chasing down attacking moves was the name of the game.

The Trek/VW plan was to get a select rider in a winning break. If there were no breaks to stay away in, the plan was to send the team to the front with three to five laps to go. Eddy Gragus anticipated this perfectly and carefully conserved and waited for the final sprint. With three laps to go, the entire Trek/VW team including Jeff Hartman, Jim Copeland, and Mark Southard went to the front to drive the pace so fast that no one could get away and to prepare Gragus for the lead out. A battle ensued between cross-town favorite Rio Grande Racing and Trek/VW for control at the front. In the final lap, with 90 riders remaining in the, it became clear that the final part of the lead out being provided by Copeland and Hartman would make it tough to beat Gragus, who was carefully tucked in behind his team. Aussie Andrew Graham had tucked in behind the lead out as well, and was prepared to try to thwart the Trek/VW effort at the last second. It didn't quite work for Graham, however, as Gragus flew across the line for the win with Graham finishing second.

Gragus and Trek/VW became the Colorado State Criterium Champion, and the Trek/VW team accomplished yet another of its seasonal goals of winning a State Championship event. "It's really great to be able to win on our own turf," Dunlap said. "I'm really proud of my guys for all their hard work. "In all the years that I have raced and have run teams, this has to be the most satisfying of all for me". The perfect execution of a plan, the selfless work from team mates, and winning with class and style is more than any team manager can hope for in one day. Plus, what a show they put on at our own event in front of huge crowds, and on such a great day".

The proceeds from the recreational ride, New Belgium Beer Garden, and the Cruiser Bike race all went to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Early estimates bring that total to approximately $9000.
