Stage 1 - March 8: Handzame - Koksijde - Handzame, 182.4 km
Casper wins, Kirsipuu into lead on windy stage
Ag2r's Jaan Kirsipuu has taken the lead from David Millar after the first stage of the Driedaagse van West Vlaanderen, after placing second the 182 kilometre leg that started and finished in Handzame. FDJeux.com's Jimmy Casper won the stage ahead of Kirsipuu, with FDJ's Philippe Gilbert taking third in the small group sprint. As Kirsipuu had recorded a marginally quicker time than Casper in the prologue, he took the overall lead.
Today's stage was quite flat, and went from Handzame to Koksijde and back. Although there were no difficulties in the terrain, the strong winds and occasional rain made life extremely tough in the peloton. After 30 kilometres of racing, a break containing a couple of Quick.Step riders escaped, forcing the Cofidis and FDJeux teams to chase to protect Millar and Brad McGee on GC. The six leaders rode out to a two minute lead, but faded once the race turned into the head and crosswinds along the Flemish coastline.
The peloton was shredded by the winds along the coast, and a leading group of 38 riders made it to Koksijde with two thirds of the stage distance covered. But the cooperation wasn't perfect on the way back into Handzame, allowing several smaller groups to make contact again. But on the three 10 km finishing circuits, another group escaped which proved to be the winning break. Containing Jimmy Casper, Jaan Kirsipuu, Philippe Gilbert, Servais Knaven (Quick.Step), Gorik Gardeyn (Lotto), Lauri Aus (Ag2r), Jans Koerts, Pieter Vries, Matthe Pronk, Remco Van Der Ven and Bart Voskamp (all Bankgiroloterij), Paul Van Schalen and Daniel Van Elven (AXA), Oleg Grichkine (Navigators) and Franck Pencole (Oktos), the group rode to a 1 minute lead, with David Millar's Cofidis team desperately chasing, with the help of a few others.
The chase was closing in on the leaders in the final circuit, but they had just enough of an advantage to stay away. Jimmy Casper preferred not to leave it to a sprint, and attacked with 1 km to go to take the stage, with Kirsipuu, Gilbert and Grichkine finishing just behind him.
The last stage tomorrow will be even more challenging, consisting of a 188 km ride through the Vlaamse Ardennen, including several of the region's well known climbs: the Kemmelberg, Zwarteberg, Rodeberg and Monteberg.
