Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo) won today the 85th Giro dell'Emilia, beating teammate Ivan Basso and CSC-Tiscali's Michael Rasmussen. It was another impressive win by Bartoli, following his last serious injury at the beginning of this year's Giro d'Italia. Nonetheless, selection for the Italian World's squadra does not appear to be in the cards for the resurgent Bartoli, as Franco Ballerini looks set to build a team around sprinter Mario Cipollini.

The early part of today's race was marked by an escape of three riders, Domenico Gualdi (Mobilvetta Design), Sebastiano Scotti (Index-Alexia), and Andris Nauduzs (Colombia-Selle Italia), who broke clear after just 14km. At first disinterested, the peloton eventually pulled back the move, which had gained a maximum advantage exceeding 10 minutes, with around 30km to race.

Shortly after the catch, Bartoli attacked on climb to San Luca, followed by his teammate Basso, Rasmussen, Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner), Fabiano Fontanelli (Mercatone Uno) , Franco Pelizzotti (Alessio), Leonardo Giordani (Team Colpack-Astro), and Marius Sabaliauskas (Saeco-Longoni Sport). This proved to be the decisive move of the day, gaining half a minute on the bunch behind with 30km to race. The leading seven did become eight as another Fassa Bortolo man, Volodymir Gustov, clawed his way across to the break on the final climb.

On the technical descent that followed, however, Bartoli broke clear again with Basso and Rasmussen. As the new leading trio reached the finishing circuits, their advantage was almost a minute with just under 10km to go. Hesitation in the chase group behind sealed the fate of the pursuers, and the podium would be played out between two Fassa Bortolo teammates and CSC's isolated Rasmussen.

Forcing Rasmussen to the front, Bartoli positioned himself perfectly in the final kilometer, with Basso set to play the team's second card. Into the final 150 meters, Bartoli used his finishing speed to distance Rasmussen, with Basso just behind to give Fassa Bortolo a one-two victory on home soil. Fontanelli and Rebellin followed over a minute behind, with remnants of the chase group in tow.
