Lee puts some Seoul into Langkawi

Historic day for Asian cycling as Loddo denied again

Seoul Cycling's Jae Won Lee became only the fourth ever Asian rider to win a Tour de Langkawi stage after breaking clear from a five-man move in the final kilometre to claim the race's longest day and open a new chapter in Asian cycling history. Even more significant was the composition of today's winning breakaway as two Malaysians, a Chinese, Japanese and Korean combined to hold off all the peloton could muster and prove beyond doubt that Asian teams must now be taken seriously in modern competitive cycling.

The result is also a measure of the Tour de Langkawi's importance in this part of the world and an utterly convincing argument against its inclusion in the ProTour - a decision the race organisers were praising just last week. The gulf between other races in the far east and the European circuit - aside from China's Tour of Qinghai Lake - makes Langkawi an important stepping stone for Asian riders to prove themselves.

As a packed crowd looked on in admiration at the race's busiest finish area yet, the delighted winner explained his state of mind in the finale. "In the last five kilometres I got a message from the team manager, he gave me the encouragement to be strong and keep going, that's what helped my win today," said Lee. "My manager told me not to look behind, but I couldn't help it, I'm very happy to win."

There was good reason to look behind, too, as the group also contained Malaysian sprinter Anuar Manan (Letua Cycling Team) and Japanese breakaway specialist Koji Fukushima (Meitan Hompo). Neither was capable of closing the gap with Manan forced to settle for second and receive the green points jersey as his consolation prize.

"I'm a bit disappointed with second," admitted the Letua rider, "because in the group of five I felt that I was the best sprinter, and that I'd have the advantage. But with one kilometre to go the Korean jumped away and I could not do anything about it. Still, I'm happy to be the first Malaysian to wear the green jersey."

Race leader Matthieu Sprick also praised the Asians' performance, the Frenchman maintaining his three second advantage on general classification with Mitchell Docker (Drapac Porsche) leapfrogging back over Gustavo Ceasar (Karpin Galicia) into second overall. "I know that the Asians come to Europe sometimes, especially the Meitan Hompo team," he said. "They are known for being very aggressive riders and have a very good level [of fitness]. It's very good for cycling and for the Tour de Langkawi as well.

"It was an ideal scenario for me when the breakaway riders were taking the bonus sprints," added Sprick. "My yellow jersey was not under threat. There's only 19 of us in contention now, but it took a long time before the breakaway went and that made the first part very hard."

For the third stage running, Tinkoff sprinter Alberto Loddo claimed the bunch sprint 1'09 behind the winner, and for the third stage running the Italian missed out on the stage victory. Loddo's fast twitch fibres may be beyond doubt, but the commitment afforded him by his Tinkoff team certainly is - especially considering the ease with which he cruised over the line today.

How it unfolded

Cloudy skies and cooler temperatures provided welcome relief for the 145 riders at this morning's start in Sitiawan. With 209.8 kilometres on the menu du jour, the race rolled out slightly earlier than usual at 11.20am. Despite the distance and soul destroying flat roads, there was no shortage of volunteers for the early move. However, special mention must again go to Malaysian National Team rider M. Fauzan Ahmed Lutti - always the first man to attack and keep race radio on its toes.

After one hour of racing 50.2 kilometres had been covered, and with such a high speed it wasn't surprising that no group had gained more than 100 metres in that time. It was obviously going to take something special to break the peloton's collective will and who better to do that than Mr. Breakaway himself, Koji Fukushima (Meitan Hompo).

The Japanese rider, winner of Stage 3 in the race's 2005 edition, let it fly after 66 kilometres and was quickly joined by Jae Won Lee (Seoul Cycling), Anuar Manan (Letua Cycling Team), Yan Xing Dong (Trek - Marco Polo) and M. Fauzan Ahmed Lutti (Malaysia National Team) for a day of all-Asian breakaway action.

There wasn't total capitulation behind, though, and the lead grew steadily as Manan put his sprint skills on show to take the first points at Sg Besar after 78.9 kilometres. Dong, Lutti and Fukushima hoovered up the remaining points while reactions started to come from behind.

Tanha Saeidi (Islamic Azad University) and Mohd Saleh (Malaysia National Team) joined forces in pursuit as did Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff) and Swiss sprinter Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom). Saeidi and Salah got within two minutes of the leaders and the two pairs eventually merged as the gap fell back to 3'25. Still the average speed remained high, however, with 95 kilometres covered after two hours on the smooth hot-mix asphalt.

Italian squad CSF Group Navigare were now setting tempo and swept up the four breakaways after 120 kilometres. Undeterred by this latest capture, Aussie time trial specialist Peter McDonald (Drapac Porsche) and Kuei Peng (Giant Asia) left the peloton's comfortable surroundings before the second sprint at 130.1 kilometres. Up front it was Manan bagging more points followed by Dong, Lutti and Fukushima.

After 135 kilometres the front five had 2'03 on McDonald and Peng with the peloton a further minute down. Three hours into Langkawi's longest stage and the 46.3 km/h average began to tell as Peng was struggling to hang tough with McDonald. Approaching the 150 kilometre mark and Peng was totally spent, falling backwards while McDonald soldiered on alone. It was a valiant effort by the Drapac man, who closed to within 1'45 of the leaders but then began to feel the burn from his considerable effort.

Both riders were eventually reeled in as the gap to the leaders stretched above five minutes for the first time. Encouraged no doubt by memories of yesterday's disorganised chase, the Asian quintet forged ahead and with 2'54 at 15 kilometres to go it became a question of who would be Langkawi's fourth Asian stage winner.

Smart money was on Fukushima, but as shown yesterday smart money isn't always right at the Tour de Langkawi and keeping your Malaysian ringgit tucked away would be a wise decision. And so it proved as Lee ripped away over the river crossing into Benting to claim a historic victory by five seconds from a hard charging Manan and Dong.

Soon after the peloton hove into view but unfortunately for Alberto Loddo he was too late once again - the Tinkoff dinner table probably an awkward place to be this evening.
