Cancellara retains lead thanks to team-mate's win

The inaugural Tour of California was the springboard that launched Juan Jose Haedo (CSC) from the domestic peloton into the spotlight of the ProTour. His two sprint wins in 2006 earned him a contract with the CSC team and the chance to race at the highest level, and Haedo returned the next year to match his performance with two more wins. In the third year of the race, Haedo got to work at matching his previous performances early, easily taking the field sprint on the first stage into Santa Rosa.

"It was great to win in Santa Rosa again and especially because there are very good riders in the field here," said Haedo. "It was a great thing to have the help of my team and Fabian - that is something that always feel nice."

Haedo was referring to the race leader's work at the front of the race in the closing kilometres, which both kept his race lead safe but also kept the pace high enough to avert any solo attacks. "He wasn't feeling that great today but he did a great job of keeping me at the front and in good position."

The win by Haedo helped protect the slim overall lead held by his team-mate Fabian Cancellara, which was under threat by Slipstream-Chipotle's Tyler Farrar, after the young American had claimed three seconds of time bonuses via the intermediate sprints. Coming into the finish Farrar was only two seconds off the lead, and only needed to finish third to gain a final bonus to take the jersey. However, Gerald Ciolek (High Road) and Heinrich Haussler (Gerolsteiner) took the other two bonuses.

"I saw that Cavendish and Farrar were making the bonus sprints but I was not there, feeling fit," said Cancellara. "In the end that is the thing about the bonus sprint, we wanted to focus on the finish. I told the guys they needed to be at the front of the race because it was a very tough circuit."

"For us to be able to keep JJ in the front and still keep the yellow jersey is beautiful," continued Cancellara. "I'm very proud and the whole team is proud because we did the right thing today. Everyone has to work because it's a big cake and everyone wanted some of it!"

"We were so close we thought if I could pick up a few seconds here and there I could get into the jersey," said Farrar about the bonus sprints. "The first two [sprints everyone was going, then the sprinters were a little nervous about the third one because it was so close to the climb - they were all kind of saving it [for the finish] and so we saw an opportunity. We came pretty close and we'll definitely try again tomorrow. If the final sprint had gone better it would have worked out, but there are a lot of really good sprinters here."

Haedo's win today gives him a total of five in the three years of the race - and with a total of eleven 'sprint' stages in the three years, Haedo has won almost half of them.

As for Cancellara's hopes to retain the leader's jersey, he will have to have a better performance on the climbs than he did today. "For me the climb was very hard and before we came to the circuit I felt so bad - my legs were so tight," he said. "I felt the lactic acid from yesterday's effort and even though it was short it was really tough so I felt this in my legs today. I hope tomorrow my legs and my feeling in general are going to be better."

Hometown hero Levi Leipheimer (Astana) had a quiet day today, but the race organizers allowed the American champion to address his fans on the award stage. Leipheimer was sporting his newly designed national champion's kit, matching his bike. "I had a little bit of input on the design of my kit," he said. "I had a bike designed for Missouri last year that was kind of retro and I really liked it so they decided to do it on the jersey and shorts. Some people don't like it!"

How it unfolded

Before the fireworks of the field sprint, the day was all about Jackson Stewart (BMC) who attacked with a few other riders around 15km into the race. While the other attacks were short lived, Stewart persisted alone and steadily built a lead as the field felt content to watch him suffer. Out of the feed zone 70km later, the lead had grown to thirteen minutes.

Sports director, John Lelangue said that the team's plan was to target today's stage - both because it was the first stage and also because the team is based out of Santa Rosa. "It was the plan to send one of the three riders who are not GC contenders or sprinters," he told Cyclingnews. "Last night I told Jackson, Scott (Nydam) and Taylor (Tolleson) to be in the breakaway because anything can happen on the first stage. We are also the local team - we are based in Santa Rosa."

"I don't think it was our plan to be off the front for that long," said Stewart. "It was our plan to be in the moves and to be involved in the race. But I don't think it was planned for me to do it alone! Anyway, that's how it worked out and we had our sights set on the KOM jersey so that worked out great."

While Stewart may not have been happy to be riding alone, back in the team car Lelangue sat comfortably and directed his rider to not go too hard too early. "Even when he had thirteen minutes I told him to stay quiet and take it easy," he said. "I know that if I was a sport director behind and he got seventeen minutes, everyone would go crazy. So I said to recover a little bit and I will tell him when to hit the gas, which was between the last sprint and the KOM."

However, the field had started to react to the gap approaching the KOM and Lelangue knew the smarter move was to be conservative. "On the downhill I said to recover and take bottles for the team-mates because you have to one, finish the stage and two, a whole week of racing remaining."

Lelangue was content with the most aggressive award, as well as the early KOM lead. "It would have been stupid to go for the stage when you have the whole field working behind. But we have the most aggressive and the KOM jerseys."

By the time the field crested the KOM Stewart's lead was nearly cut in half - and down the descent as Stewart recovered the gap continued to shrink. At the bottom, 126km into the stage, Stewart was finally caught and the final 30km of flat would set up the field sprint.

As the race entered the three finishing circuits, Slipstream was back on the front trying to get Farrar into position. But Quick Step and CSC were also motivated, with Quick Step working for Paolo Bettini and CSC working for both Haedo and Cancellara. Slipstream had one rider on the front for most of the first lap, but all three teams traded turns on the front after. On the final lap Alexander Moos (BMC) put in a suicide attack with 2km to go, but to no avail.

The attack disorganized the field for a few moments until the ProTour teams regained control. Bobby Julich was one of the riders leading it out for team-mate Haedo. A few other trains were forming, including Slipstream led by part-owner and team captain David Millar. But in the end, Haedo's jump was too much for the field, putting him across the line with at least three bike lengths to spare.

"The whole team was involved in the lead out on the last lap," said Haedo. "I was at the front from the first lap and in the last lap the guys were working really hard. Quick Step came around a little bit at the end but Fabian helped me and kept me in really good position - I tried to be patient because he has a lot power in the legs and I have to tell him to hold on because it's too long for me. I tried to keep calm and he did a really good job for me."

Back behind American George Hincapie was caught up in a crash while trying to set-up team-mate Ciolek. "First of all George is fine," said Ciolek. "He just has some small lumps but I think he will be fresh tomorrow. Coming into the finish I was in good position but it was tough for the first race and I think I lost some punch in the last meters and I wasn't as strong today. I hope I will get better and not worse."

Tomorrow's second stage is the same as last year, starting in Santa Rosa and heading inland to the state capital in Sacramento. There are two rated climbs, including a hefty jaunt up Trinity Grade, followed by a flat final 100km with two time bonus sprints.
