In a way, stages four and five of the Tour de Georgia are a 'what could have been' for Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel). After dominating the time trial up Lookout Mountain yesterday, the California native beat the entire race into submission with a seemingly effortless ascent of the much-feared Brasstown Bald mountain in north Georgia, taking out the stage win by thirty-eight seconds over teammate Tom Danielson. Race leader Janez Brajkovic, also of the Discovery Channel team, shadowed Christian Vandevelde (CSC) the entire way up, all but confirming his overall lead in the race.

"Fortunately I felt great yesterday and again today, I had the legs to keep it going. Tom was gracious enough to lend me Brasstown Bald for this year," said Leipheimer, after his teammate won the stage last year.

"I waited a long time just to see what Simoni would do," said Danielson about Saunier Duval - Prodir setting Gilberto Simoni up at the bottom of Brasstown. "Simoni was really strong and did the most work at the bottom of the climb but when Levi left, I just sat on Simoni to let the gap go. I went hard enough to make sure Simoni couldn't come with me. I gave it about 30 seconds before I started going hard too. I was hoping to win the stage but Levi was the first to attack so I let the gap go big to make sure the coast was clear and then I hit it out hard."

Behind them race leader Brajkovic was feeling capable on Vandevelde's wheel, signalling to the team that he had the situation in hand. "They both went with Simoni when he attacked, and once they saw Janez was ok with them up the road, they went," said Discovery Channel team director Johan Bruyneel. (Read Cyclinews' 2006 interview with Brajkovic.)

"Obviously when we were on the last climb I had to focus on staying on his wheel," said Brajkovic about staying with Vandevelde. "I didn't care about other riders, I just focused on Vandevelde's wheel up the climb. He attacked like more than 20 times and I have to say it was really hard but I was able to stay with him and that is all that mattered."

I didn't go with the guys at the bottom - I wasn't that confident," said Vandevelde. "This was not our race to win because we were focused on our own race. But in hindsight, they were right there at the end. Maybe I could have gone with them, because I ended up having to ride the whole way on my own. They weren't so far ahead of us but still, there is no way we were going to do that."

"I think Janez was as good [as me] or better - so I don' think it would have made any difference," he continued. "I tried as much as I could to make time up on Janez. For a second I thought maybe I could have but I wasn't able to go fast enough."

The surprise of the day was the third place finish by Colavita-Sutter Home's Anthony Colby, who rode strong in an eight-man breakaway, surviving to the final climb and placing the best out of his fellow breakaway riders. "Things just kind of fell into place today, being in the move and then keeping it going through out the whole race," said Colby. "We had a pretty decent gap at the base of the climb and there were four of us rolling well together up until several attacks part way up. We hit the climb and whatever you had you gave."

"It was really a mental slipstream more than anything else," he continued. "When it got steep I just kept going and Levi passed me there. I just did what ever I could to get to the top and take the opportunity for the podium."

Another domestic rider, Nathan O'Neill (Health Net) finished strong, just six seconds behind Colby. "I kept my own pace but I just had really good legs at the bottom," said the Australian. "I thought I was going to get dropped by the first ten guys so I just settled in to see what would happen. They weren't riding away from me so I decided to push a little harder. The next thing I knew I was just riding away. I have never felt like that before." And since this is only his sixth day of actual racing in 2007, he is quite happy with his result. "I've just had the best help [rehabbing.] I think it tells me that I can climb with just about anybody [in the United States]."

Another of the breakaway riders who was in it until the end on Brasstown Bald was Health Net's Ryder Hesjedal, who came away with a nice consolation prize for his efforts - the final king of the mountains jersey. "I was cleared to go for the KOM jersey because I was in the break," he said. "I gained some points on the first one and decided to keep going for them." Hesjedal's teammate Jeff Louder virtually passed the jersey to him on the road. "It is great for us to be able to keep this jersey because we had it going into the stage race and it just switched from Louder to myself. It is great for Health Net to solidify a jersey at this stage race."

The most aggressive rider on the day was Alexandre Moos (BMC) even though he said he was not supposed to be in the break. "The break just sort of happened," he said. "There were a series of decisions that were not discussed at the start of the race for our team today." But what made the decision to name him the most aggressive on the day was his attack five kilometers from the bottom of the final climb. "The breakaway started to disorganize coming to the climb and I attacked trying to take those who wanted to work hard up the climb. I waited a little to see if there would be some riders that might bridge up to me to work with. No one joined me so I had to make a do or die effort to get to the top of the climb even though it was not my intention to make such an early move or to even be in the early break."

Unlike previous editions of the race, the extra day means that there are two more stages to go - though without any climbing it should be little work for Discovery Channel to protect its lead. But you would not know it from Brajkovic, who sounded ready for battle. "For sure we got the jersey but there are still two stages more," he said. "Until the race is over we can't say that I have won the race. We need to wait for the next coupe of days, but I think we are on a good path to win the race. The guys were amazing and I have to say thank you to them. They did an amazing job today and it is an amazing feeling to be protected by those riders."

How it unfolded

The Tour de Georgia departed from the hometown of Saul Raisin, Dalton, once again this year. And Saul Raisin was on hand to lead the peloton out for the march east towards Brasstown Bald. Raisin even gave the peloton a little gas, putting quite a gap on them during the parade laps.

Out on course the attacks again came early and often, but the fast-moving peloton would not allow anyone to get away before the first sprint in Elijay, just 23 kilometers in. Soon after, as the road titled up towards the first KOM at Fort, the attacking finally paid off, with a large group of riders rolling clear: Anthony Colby (Colavita/Sutter Home), Ryder Hesjedal (Health Net-Maxxis), Thomas Danielson (Discovery Channel), Christopher Baldwin (Toyota-United), Cesar Augusto Grajales (Jittery Joe's), Michael Blaudzun (Team CSC), Alexandre Moos (BMC), Ben Day (Navigators Insurance), Gilberto Simoni (Saunier Duval-Prodir), and Danny Pate (Slipstream-Chipotle).

However, with so many big guns in the group, the fate of the break would likely be sealed. Over the top it was Hesjedal followed by Day, Colby and Zajicek along with Blaudzun, Moos, Pate and Baldwin - while the rest of the early break floated back to the comfort of the peloton. USA Development Team rider John Devine, himself having a strong tour, tried to bridge solo for many kilometers but could only manage to draw out a minute. Nonetheless, Devine is doing his team proud this week, finishing eighth on the day.

The gap grew steadily to more than five minuted before any real action took place back in the peloton. Then Jittery Joe's, sporting a different all-white team kit as is its tradition on this stage every year, put six riders on the front with a few Saunier Duval-Prodir riders pitching in. Team director Jesse Lawler said this was to put Cesar Grajales in position at the bottom of Brasstown, like he was when he won here back in 2004. "That was the only card we had to play on a stage like today, to get Cesar to the bottom of the final climb, which we did," he said. "It was either that or ride around in circles all day, so we rather do that." Even tough Grajales separated his shoulder at Redlands the other week he has been giving it a full effort this week - earning the unofficial strong-man award around the press room. "It didn't work out in the end but I give Cesar a lot of credit for even trying," said Lawler.

This move by Jittery Joe's kept the breakaway within a reasonable gap, something that breakaway rider Danny Pate could have done without. "It was a good break with eight strong guys," he told Cyclingnews. "It was just unfortunate for us Jitterly Joe's took up the chase so early for not much in the end. It didn't seem like anyone else cared until later."

As the breakaway neared the Georgia 180 spur, the time was down to little more than two minutes. Even though Alexandre Moos had been seen struggling at the rear of the breakaway up the second KOM of Wolfpen Gap, he rolled off the front on one of the many difficult rolling hills about seven kilometres from the start of Brasstown Bald. "He was kinda soft pedalling all day and I figured he would be the strongest guy, and he was," said Pate. "He probably should have waited to attack us until we were on the climb because the four of us were riding behind him working together for like five kilometers. But he didn't know the climb - didn't think it would be as severe. You can lose a minute in the final 750 meters!"

Moos held about a 50-100 meter gap all the way to the base of the mountain, which had a lovely banner darkly welcoming riders to "The Wall". The remaining riders in the breakaway were Pate, Colby and Hesjedal with the peloton not far behind and Moos just barely up the road.

Saunier Duval-Prodir powered the peloton trying to set up Simoni for the win as its hopes for the overall were clearly out of reach. Up the early slopes it was David Millar giving it the full gas. Discovery Channel waited for Simoni to make the first move while still keeping an eye on Vandevelde for Brajkovic. "I was ahead of Janez and Vandevelde riding the first part of the climb with Simoni and Levi," said Danielson. "Simoni took over at the front," said Leipheimer. "He was strong and very smart about his efforts - hitting it hard on the steep parts. With five kilometers to go it was just Tom and me on his wheel and I sensed that he had slowed down a little bit so I tried to hit him hard first. If that didn't work than Tom would be there to follow his wheel."

With that it was the Levi and Tom show, as the two rode up the climb catching and passing the remnants of the breakaway, finally passing Moos halfway up. "Levi caught me with two kilometers to go and the hardest part of the climb was still to come," said Moos. "I felt like when Levi caught me there were some others coming from behind. There were no chances to recover on the last section of the climb because it was just too steep. There was no option but to just keep going as hard as I could to the top."

Leipheimer danced on the pedals at a high cadence, reminiscent of a certain former Tour de France winner, all the way to the top.

Back down the slope Brajkovic pretended to be Vandevelde's shadow, never leaving his rear wheel. Vandevelde put in a notable effort, trying many times to accelerate on the steep sections, but to no avail. The two crossed the line as they had ridden the entire climb, with Vandevelde ahead of Brajkovic.

Tomorrow's stage is a new route from Lake Lanier to Stone Mountain Park. Join Cyclingnews and Grover for complete live updates and a detailed report on all of the action, beginning at noon EDT.
