One week into this Tour the candidates for overall honours are yet to fully assert themselves. Saturday's time trial has sorted out the GC to an extent, but the Pyrenees and the Alps await. John Kenny looks at how the final GC order is slowly beginning to take shape.

The final two weeks of this Tour will have something that has been largely missing from recent editions: suspense. It was difficult enough to pick a winner before the withdrawal of the two short-odds favourites Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile) and Ivan Basso (CSC) but it was highly likely that one of these two would win, if form and the bookies are any guide. Tour podium candidates Alexandre Vinokourov (Würth) and Francisco Mancebo (AG2R) are also gone. With Lance Armstrong now retired, that's the top five riders from last year absent, opening up the opportunity for other talented riders to showcase their wares.

New race leader Serguei Gonchar finished second in the 2004 Giro d'Italia and has to be added to the list of possibles; the yellow jersey can be a powerful motivator. He's not a great climber, but he showed that he is no slouch either when he limited his losses to Damiano Cunego on the 2004 Giro's mountainous stage 16. The mountain stages are less severe than in previous Tour editions and he may survive long enough to reassert himself in the second long time trial.

Floyd Landis, Saturday's time trial runner-up, had a mechanical problem that cost him some time but he is still well placed going into the second week. He is exactly one minute behind Gonchar's. Landis' early season overall wins at Paris Nice and the tours of Georgia and California had already marked him as a favourite. He was hard to spot in the weeks leading up to the Tour, but his preparation has evidently been sound. His form makes a compelling case for favouritism.

Gonchar's performance has highlighted the comparative depth of talent of the teams. T-Mobile still has three possible GC contenders (Michael Rogers and Andreas Klöden are the others), despite the withdrawal of Ullrich. Triple world time trial champion Rogers did not get the ideal preparation at the Giro d'Italia due to problems with his teeth. He climbed well in the 2003 Tour in defence of Richard Virenque's polka dot jersey, but his climbing form has been patchy since. Klöden can climb, however, and has finished second overall in 2004. If he can stay upright, he is surely a threat to the overall.

CSC, however, do not have seem to have the same reserves of talent as T-Mobile, although the team is also having some appalling luck. Bobby Julich's crash in the time trial has limited any support that Carlos Sastre can get in the mountains. David Zabriskie had a poor time trial by his standards and Stuart O'Grady's crash hurt the team's chances of a stage win. Conversely, Davitamon-Lotto are taking full advantage of their available talent. Robbie McEwen is the fastest sprinter in the race and the team also has Evans for the GC. It's entirely possible that the team could secure the green and yellow jerseys in Paris.

During the first week, some of the early favourites have run into surprisingly serious difficulties. Dauphiné Libéré winner Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) had a forgettable time trial on Saturday, losing over six minutes to stage winner Gonchar. It will take a super-human effort in the mountains to haul back that sort of a deficit, although it's more than likely he'll try. Bobby Julich crashed early on in the time trial and is now out of the race.

Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto) had a good time trial, but there are a host of other possible Tour winners who also at least limited their losses to Gonchar. Paolo Savoldelli (Discovery) and Rabobank's Denis Menchov had good rides. Menchov is now eighth, and the 2005 Vuelta a España winner will want to add to his grand tour palmares.

Prologue - Saturday, July 1: Strasbourg ITT, 7.1 km

Norwegian sprinter Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) deviated from the script by winning the prologue and securing the first yellow jersey at least a day earlier than expected. Sprinters are expected to make a dash in the prologue as the time bonuses available in the first week provides them with the chance of wearing yellow, but for one of the fast-twitch men to actually beat the specialists was something else. Hushovd's surprise result thankfully provided another talking point after Friday's disruption.

Hushovd scorched down Strasbourg's Avenue Herrenschmidt and passed through the arrivée with a time of eight minutes seventeen, with the impressive average speed of 51.429.

Good prologue performances came from world time trial champ Michael Rogers (T-Mobile), Paolo Savoldelli (Discovery Channel), Floyd Landis (Phonak) and Vladimir Karpets (Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears), who were seventh to tenth respectively.

Stage 1 - Sunday, July 2: Strasbourg - Strasbourg, 183 km

Back to normality on the first sprinters stage, which turned out to be exactly that with Jimmy Casper (Cofidis) winning the bunch gallop. The stage even had the de rigueur early break that was reeled in heartbreakingly close to the finish by the sprinter's teams. Tom Boonen (Quickstep-Innergetic) found himself on the front too early but was too committed to stop. Green jersey favourite Robbie McEwen (Davitamon-Lotto) was boxed in and Hushovd sprinted down a tiny gap on the barriers, where his arm hit a spectator's promotional banner, slicing it wide open. Casper steered clear of the chaos and kept a clear line to the finish.

Quick thinking by George Hincapie (Discovery) prompted him to sprint for third place in the final bonus sprint, giving him two seconds advantage over the luckless Hushovd and the maillot jaune.

Stage 2 - Monday, July 3: Obernai - Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), 228.5 km

Hincapie's reign in yellow was short-lived with Thor Hushovd reclaiming the overall lead. The biggest smile, though, went to Robbie McEwen who won the big dash to the line in Esch-sur-Alzette. A daring attack by T-Mobile's Matthias Kessler with six kilometres to go and a crash just 2,000 metres from the finish that brought more than half the bunch to a complete halt provided the spectacle prior to McEwens bike throw that edged him ahead of Tom Boonen.

There was more drama to come when Hushovd clashed with McEwen, pulling his foot forcing him to pedal across the line with one leg and his right arm raised in protest, which he almost immediately withdrew when he saw the video replay. Donning another yellow jersey surely eased his disappointment.

Stage 3 - Tuesday, July 4: Esch-sur-Alzette - Valkenburg (Netherlands), 216 km

Matthias Kessler was rewarded for his perseverance when he stayed away from the charging bunch to claim a well-deserved win in Holland. Yesterday's sole escapee turned around the disappointment of stage 2 on the climb's 8.3 percent slopes leaving the field behind.

Five seconds later, Kessler's Australian team-mate Michael Rogers led home a group of 47 riders, with Daniele Bennati (Lampre-Fondital), Tom Boonen (Quick-Step-Innergetic) and Erik Zabel (Milram) picking up the minor places. On the nasty climb, 'Le Cauberg', close to the finish, the world champion was a cut above the rest of the pure sprinters, with Hushovd and McEwen finishing two or three groups behind.

Boonen's effort was rewarded with the maillots jaune and vert and showed that the battle for green would be close-fought all the way to Paris.

Stage 4 - Wednesday, July 5: Huy (Belgium) - Saint-Quentin, 207 km

The uphill finish into Saint-Quentin seemed to be tailor-made for Boonen, but Robbie McEwen had other ideas.

With the last of an early break caught less than two kilometres from the finish the sprinter's teams took over, with all of the associated pushing and shoving that makes their craft so exciting. McEwen's new lead-out man, Gert Steegmans, did a great job stepping into the breech for crash-victim Freddy Rodriguez and helped his leader to open a massive three bike-length gap by the finish, taking his tenth Tour de France stage victory. Boonen's second place helped consolidate his stay in yellow.

Stage 5 - Thursday, July 6: Beauvais - Caen, 225 km

Three-time world champion Spaniard Oscar Freire (Rabobank) showed that he is far from a spent force by upsetting the more fancied sprinters in Caen. Robbie McEwen's inexperienced lead-out man, Gert Steegmans, fumbled his lines and started his effort far too early, leaving the Australian with too much road to cover before the line. What a difference a day makes, after the previous stage the young Belgian was the toast of the team. Boonen's second place ensured him of another day in yellow.

Stage 6 - Friday, July 7: Lisieux - Vitré, 189 km

Robbie McEwens lead-out train was firmly back on the rails in Vitré. Gert Steegmans went too early on the previous stage, but he showed how quick a learner he is by applying his power at precisely the right time, giving McEwen an armchair ride to the finish and his eleventh Tour stage. The win gave him a 41-point lead in the green jersey competition.Boonen failed to get on a good wheel and finished third. Lampre-Fondital's Daniele Bennati had been quietly going about his business in the first week without making too many headlines. Nevertheless, his second place on the stage also moved him to second in the green jersey competition.

Boonen stayed in yellow, but with a long time trial to come must have known that his days as leader were numbered.

Stage 7 - Saturday, July 8: Saint-Grégoire - Rennes ITT, 52 km

After the sprinters had their fun in the first week, it was time for the GC candidates to show their hands. Serguei Gonchar (T-Mobile) comfortably won the stage from Floyd Landis (Phonak) with Sebastian Lang (Gerolsteiner) third. T-Mobile had a good day with Michael Rogers not far off the pace in fourth. Patrik Sinkewitz and Andreas Klöden finished in sixth and eighth respectively. Denis Menchov, Joost Posthuma, Cadel Evans and Vladimir Karpets would also be happy with their rides.

The question of leadership at Discovery may have been settled with Paolo Savoldelli finishing 30 seconds ahead of George Hincapie and over a minute ahead of Yaroslav Popovych.

The sprinters were finally foiled by Sylvain Calzati (AG2R) who first got across to the early break of the day after 48 kms and then rode away from them with 30 kms to go. The sprinters' teams were happy to allow Floyd Landis' Phonak team do most of the work to reel in the breakaway and left themselves with a two minute deficit at the finish. Robbie McEwen strengthened his lead in the green jersey competition by taking the bunch sprint for fourth.

Little of this mattered to Calzati, who called upon his three years' experience as a professional to time his effort to perfection. The former Tour de l'Avenir winner kept enough in reserve from yesterday's time trial to earn the biggest win of his career.
