Yet again, the tables turn in the tropics. On a day when many expected events to unfold on the final ascent to Cameron Highlands, where the Tour de Langkawi would end after 150.6 kilometres, a breakaway 30 kilometres into the stage decided the race.

Four South Africans made the move that began 24 strong and among them was David George, so not surprisingly, the odds were leaning heavily in the Proteas' favour. The notable absentee was defending champ Ryan Cox, but right from the opening stage, George looked the hungrier of the two, which was a point proven by the day's end as the 29 year-old donned the golden fleece.

"Honestly, we didn't expect to have four guys [in the break]," he admitted, "but we couldn't have been in a better position."

Asked if he still rates the team from Selle Italia Diquigiovanni as their biggest threat, George began by saying: "Obviously it worked out better for us today; to have [Gabriele] Massaglia there in some ways worked out better for us than having the Colombian guy [Walter Pedraza] there.

"They're not at that far behind, so we're not home free, we have to pay attention - but to have Darren [Lill] riding the way he was today and to have Ryan to back us up on Genting, we're a strong team, so we've got the calibre to defend what we've got."

However, at the end of the day (to use a much overused expression), it was Credit Agricole's American young gun Saul Raisin who outsmarted the team from South Africa, feigning weakness on the climb and looking vulnerable, only to snatch victory in the final 200 metres on the 13 percent finishing slope.

"The directors told us we could do whatever we wanted, and if we see a group go off with 15 guys, we go with it," explained Raisin. "We had a big group of 25 guys and it was good; I knew if it stayed away, I had a good chance of taking the stage... so I did!" he exclaimed, looking every bit the happy camper.

Noting their was a bit of talking going on between him and the South Africans in the finale, Raisin said he took a leaf out of Lance Armstrong's L'Alpe d'Huez trick of calling bluff: "Well, I told them coming into the finish, 'You guys are stronger than me', but I was riding good, I felt good - and I didn't want to show them how good.

So tell me Saul...

"I kind of wanted to show them I was weaker than I was, even though I was the first person to attack at the bottom of the climb. Coming to the finish, we dropped one [of the breakaways, Gabriele Massaglia] and I just kept [faking] and didn't even ride through. The last 200 metres, I just gave it everything I had and took the win, so it couldn't be better."

The French team's excellent offensive riding now sees them with two riders in the top ten - Francesco Bellotti (4th @ 2'22) and Benoit Poilvet (7th @ 2'27) - which is on par with the Selle Italia Diquigiovanni duo of Gabriele Massaglia (who suffered bad cramps in the closing kilometres and lost 37 seconds to George, but is still second on GC @ 40') and Walter Pedraza (5th @ 2'22), and Navigators Insurance, who have their Colombian climber Cesar Grajales sitting third (@ 2'22) and Canadian workhorse Mark Walters ninth (@ 3'27).

With George looking so strong and motivated, South Africa will be going into Tuesday's stage to Genting in the driver's seat. And provided he doesn't falter on Malaysia's most vicious of climbs, David should finally realise his dream of becoming overall race champion.

"Since November last year, I've had one solid objective and this is it for now," admitted George.

"We've worked really hard over the summer; the condition's good, we want to win this race, we're here to win this race and we have the team to win this race. I've said it before that it's [the race] is an opportunity to prove that we have the calibre to be racing against the best in the world, and this is our way of showing it."

Best Asian rider Takashi Miyazawa (Japan) lost seven minutes but impressively kept his lead in the classification by almost three minutes from Iranian Hossein Askari, and although falling out of the top ten, the friendly Japanese still lies in a very respectable 13th place overall.

"Did you surprise yourself today?" was the question asked.

"No!" Miyazawa smiled before adding, "I don't like mountains, but before this race, I went to Thailand training in the mountains, so I'll try to hold on [to Asian rider jersey] on the stage to Genting Highlands."

117 riders lined out in bright, sunny weather for the start of the third stage of the 2006 Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi. The 150.6 kilometre leg from Lumut to Cameron Highlands would see them face fifty kilometres of near-continuous climbing in the second-half of the stage, making this crunch time for the overall contenders.

Following the drop of the flag, the peloton were straight down to things with a hectic pace being set as the field headed inland. A large number of attacks were fired off before the first bonus sprint but nothing stuck. Points leader Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof Akud) took full points in Pekan Damai, ahead of Aziz Md Saiful Anuar (Équipe Asia), Corey Sweet (Wiesenhof) and Russell Downing (Recycling.co.uk).

After 34 kilometres Yohann Le Boulanger (Bouyues Telecom) and Christophe Le Mevel (Credit Agricole) got clear and built a lead of ten seconds. Realising the danger, Rodney Green (South Africa), Anthony Ravard (Bouygues Telecom), Gregory Habeaux (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) and Carl Naibo (AG2R Prévoyance) bridged across, but these were mopped up by the bunch. Anthony Ravard (Bouygues Telecom), Torsten Schmidt (Wiesenhof Akud) and Takum Beppu (Japan) then took off with three kilometres to go until the second bonus sprint but, two kilometres later, they were caught.

The hotspot in Sri Iskandar was almost an all-Asian affair, showing how much cycling has progressed in the region. Zahit Sayut (Malaysia) won the gallop ahead of Aziz Md Saiful Anuar (Équipe Asia), Sébastien Hinault (Credit Agricole) and Ali Ahmad Falani (Malaysia).

After 44 kilometres the first real break of the day scorched clear and, with 24 committed riders present, they started to pull away. Four South African riders - namely David George, Rodney Green, Darren Lill and Jeremy Maartens - were there, as was Gabriele Missaglia (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), Andy Flickinger (Bouygues Telecom), Saul Raisin (Credit Agricole), Sergiy Matveyev (Ceramica Panaria-Navigarre), Merculio Ramos Jr (Casino Filipino), Oleg Grishkine (Navigators Insurance), Mark Walters (Navigators Insurance), Robin Sharman (Recycling.co.uk), Edward Clancy and Geraint Thomas (Great Britain), Gene Bates, Andreas Dietziker and Massimo Iannetti (LPR), Gregory Habeaux and Johan Verstrepen (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Laurent Mangel (AG2R Prévoyance), Wilbowo Adi (Wismilak), David McCann (Giant Asia), plus brothers Koji and Shinichi Fukushima (Japan). Raul Garcia (Relax-Gam) and Julian Winn (Great Britain) set off in pursuit but were unable to get across.

Missaglia beat Green, Lill and Dietziker at the third bonus sprint in Batu Gajah, but after this the break's advantage - which had been one and a half minutes - started to fall. At the 68 kilometre point this lead was under a minute and it appeared that the break were waiting for the peloton. However the hammer went down again and at the 82 kilometre point the leaders were a minute and 14 seconds clear.

Adi, Grishkine and Mangel lost their place from this group as the road started to rear upwards. Others then slipped back, Green, Maartens, Ramos, Thomas, Habeaux, Verstreppen and Koji Fukushima all heading south.

Although defending champion Ryan Cox had missed the move, the South African team had another overall contender in David George and they continued to pour on the pressure. With 50 kilometres to go thirteen remained up front, namely George, Lill, Missaglia, Raisin, Matveyev, Walters, Sharman, Clancy, Bates, Iannetti, Habeaux, McCann and Shinichi Fukushima. The main bunch was over five and a half minutes back, making things difficult for those who had missed the move.

Realising their race was slipping away, five riders went clear. Ryan Cox, José Serpa (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), Walter Pedraza (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), Francesco Bellotti (Credit Agricole) and yellow jersey Maximiliano Richeze (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) reduced their deficit by a minute but then eased back, leading to a regrouping of sorts.

However Bellotti dug in again several kilometres later, dragging a seventeen man group away. This bunch included Cox, Serpa and Grajales and by the 117 kilometre point they had reduced their deficit to 3 minutes and 6 seconds.

Lill was first over the top of the Hors Categorie climb of Kg. Raja, followed by Clancy and George. Mark Walters was fourth while fifth-placed Gene Bates was also very active.

130 kilometres into the stage, Matveyev was dropped from the front group. Bates was feeling considerably better and he attacked alone, only to be recaptured with just over 15 kilometres to go. He was struck down by bad stomach problems shortly afterwards, being forced to stop by the side of the road and take a toilet break. It unfortunately meant that his chance of a stage win was gone.

Things were getting crucial at this point, with the time gap between the front group and the next chasers down to 1 minute 30 seconds. It looked like it was still possible for those behind to catch the leaders, but 2005 champion Ryan Cox was stranded on the wrong side of a split in the chasing group and couldn't get back on terms.

Up front, Tour de l'Avenir KOM winner Saul Raisin was looking antsy, attacking several times and putting pressure on the break. Nearing the top of the first category climb of Brinchang there were only six riders left at the sharp end of things, namely George, Bates, Missaglia, Raisin, Iannetti and McCann. The latter two were reported by race radio as being in difficulty but McCann got a second wind and returned to the group.

Raisin, however, had more left to give. Another surge dragged him, George and Lill away, and then with about a kilometre to go, the latter lost contact.

George led Raisin across the KOM line at the top of the climb, while Lill and McCann were next to the summit. Lill dug in deep on the descent and was just two seconds down with 2 kilometres remaining. However that was as close as he could get. The final uphill drag to the line saw this gap open out again, meaning that Raisin and George scrapped it out for the stage win between them. The Credit Agricole rider proved stronger inside the final 100 metres, racing home to an excellent stage win.

George finished in the same time to take over his first Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi leader's yellow jersey, while Lill and McCann came home 17 and 32 seconds back respectively. Missaglia, Laurent Lefevre (Bouygues Telecom), Francesco Bellotti and José Serpa completed the top eight.

Meanwhile, previous race leader Maximiliano Richeze (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) trailed in 20 minutes and 33 seconds down in 56th place. He dropped to 35th overall but the first year professional will have more chances on the flatter stages in the race.
