Danielson tops Brasstown Bald -- Landis tops Georgia

Landis matches Danielson punch for punch to retain overall lead

The similarities between this year's Tour de Georgia and last year's ended today on the road up Brasstown Bald as Floyd Landis (Phonak) matched Tom Danielson (Discovery Channel) all the way to the top, securing his four second overall lead. Danielson tried in vain to drop Landis in the final kilometers but waited too long, unlike last year when he attacked from the bottom.

"It was a really tactical race," Danielson told Cyclingnews after the race. "We definitely underestimated Floyd. He was very strong today and was gritting his teeth -- he really gave it everything he had." Danielson did hold on for the stage win, but was disappointed that he could not put time into Landis like last year. "I was just looking for the finish, trying to stay with him," said Landis. "It was just a matter of sticking to him."

"I think I made a mistake by not making my move at the bottom," admitted Danielson. "I should have gone then and gave it everything I had all the way to the top. What happened was that we were together and there was a head wind. I slowed down to make Floyd take his [Martinez's] wheel and wait for Popovych. But, Floyd was able to recover and then later when Popovich passed us Floyd was not too concerned with chasing him so we basically just stopped and had a picnic on the climb. We waited and waited and waited and then I tried to kick it in the last few hundred meters but he was right there behind me."

Phonak's director sportif René Savary is certainly happy to see a different result from last year -- much of which he owes to Floyd's and the team's progress since then. "We were really proud we could defend our jersey but it was a real tough stage. At the end congratulations to Discovery -- it was impressive but we had an unbeatable Floyd. What more can you say? And our team made it a perfect job. We saw we had a much better team than last year -- they could do the job until the end."

"My team has done such an exceptional job here over the last five days as well as last year," said Landis. "They did a good job at the front today and they deserve all the credit. The last five kilometers of the climb, Popo and Danielson were very strong. We went over the climb at a really high pace. I knew Tom was very good at hard efforts like that and it is not exactly my strong point. We tried to use a few guys in the beginning so that we had some fresh guys in the end. I kind of expected that I would be out numbered in the last climb."

Even more impressive today was the display by Discovery Channel's Jason McCartney who wore the most aggressive rider jersey today after his relentless attacking and solo effort yesterday. McCartney sat two points behind Lucas Euser (TIAA-CREF) in the KOM category. The two battled hard in the day's only breakaway, but McCartney was just too strong for Euser. He took maximum points over the first two difficult KOMs before being caught on the second descent. McCartney now wears both the most aggressive rider jersey, the only rider to win it in back-to-back stages at this race, and the KOM jersey with a seven point lead over Euser. With only six points available in tomorrow's final stage, McCartney can relax on the ride to Alpharetta.

After the stage, the press were let in on a tidbit of information that put McCartney's efforts in a whole new perspective. "People don't know this but he has been sick this week," explained Danielson. "On stage two he had to stop at the side of the road and was totally out of the race. The ambulance and everyone had gone by and he chased himself back into the race on the finishing circuits. The guy is incredible."

Fred Rodriguez (Davitamon-Lotto) maintained his lead in the points competition with the breakaway taking the two sprint point opportunities of the day. From there it was hang on for dear life. "I am pretty crafty when I am trying to climb up these mountains," Rodriguez said. "I finished as best as I could knowing that these guys were going to completely demolish me up it. So I conserved energy and switched back and forth up the climb as best as I could to save my legs for tomorrow."

Rodriguez only really has three people to watch tomorrow, as only twenty points are available tomorrow on one sprint line and the stage finish. Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel) is the most threatening with only five points between them, but not quite the sprinter Fast Freddie can be. However, with the best young rider in Janez Brajkovic, and king of the mountains and most aggressive rider jersey's with McCartney, Johann Bruyneel might try to make up for the fact that the team is without the leader's jersey by sweeping the rest.

How it unfolded

Spring showers drenched the riders at the start in Blairsville, but all was dry by the time the race had looped around back to the start town for the first intermediate sprint of the day. By that point a six-rider break had formed that included Sébastien Rosseler (Quick Step,) Kasper Klostergaard Larsen (CSC,) Aaron Olson (Suanier Duval-Prodir,) Will Frishkorn (TIAA-CREF,) as well as the two break riders from yesterday, KOM leader Lucas Euser (TIAA-CREF) and Jason McCartney (Discovery Channel.)

As the break approached the first climb McCartney and Euser rolled off the front, smelling the KOM points up the road. McCartney drove the pace and eventually Euser could not match the pace. McCartney built a strong lead over the top of the Hogpen Gap, putting 2:41 on the four riders behind him. Euser held on for second as well as a slimmer lead on the KOM jersey.

McCartney did not wait for the break to catch back on and descended at nearly 60 m.p.h. Euser also held an advantage on the now chase group of four for a time, but eventually was reeled in. At this point the Phonak led field had brought the gap to the chasers down significantly but McCartney was still going. Through the Bavarian-style town of Helen, Georgia, McCartney took the sprint followed by the chasers. But the field was bearing down and caught the group soon after.

On the second KOM up Unicoi Gap McCartney was riding along side his team car as his support crew shouted out the time splits. Nearing the half-way point of the climb the gap was under a minute and falling quickly, with McCartney digging deep into his reserves. Pieter Mertens (Davitamon-Lotto) tried to bridge the gap once McCartney was in sight near the top, but the tenacious climber did not give up. Over the top McCartney sat-up taking the points and the lead in the KOM competition. Once Mertens joined him the two descended together and kept a small gap on the field for a short time.

Once caught, the already small field was no longer a field. The leading group that approached Brasstown Bald was only twelve riders, including Landis, Danielson and a few of their teammates among others, including Toyota-United's Justin England -- the only remaining American domestic professional. "Danielson and the others started to make a strong acceleration when we turned onto the road about 5km to go and I just had to ride my own race for there on out because I could not keep up with their accelerations," England said. "I just kept riding steady all the way up and picked off a few guys along the way."

On the base it was Danielson sheltered by Popovych and Martinez as well as Landis sheltered by Cataluna and Tschoop. Also in this group was former winner here Cesar Grajales (Navigators Insurance.) Not long after the climb's steep grade kicked in Cataluna and Grajales lost contact. Down one teammate Landis sat on the Discovery trio as they pushed the pace even more.

Danielson put in a few attacks but Landis was not losing contact as other riders fell off the pace. Landis even tried an attack that was immediately covered by Popovych. A few times the pace even slowed to a crawl as Danielson tried to make Floyd lead, allowing Grajales to come close to catching back on. Popovych was dropped by a few more re-accelerations, but then regained contact with a slower pace up the climb.

Inside the final kilometer Popovych attacked as Grajales rejoined Danielson and Landis. "I did let Popo go a couple of times because that would have been fine with me if he won," Landis said. "But I was strong enough to be there at the end." Strong he was as he matched Danielson's accelerations riding side-by-side the entire last kilometer. Around the steep switch-back where Danielson dropped Landis last year the two could see Popovych who was running out of gas. The two passed him and quickly made it to the final sharp 160 degree turn to the finish.

Landis, on the left, was in the inside position between Danielson and the finish line. "He was putting himself in place the whole way," Danielson said of Landis' positioning. "He was doing that a lot." At that point Landis looked over at Danielson to see if another attack was coming, and turned his focus on just getting across the line with Danielson's wheel. "At that point it was just a matter of sticking to him," a tired Landis said. Danielson did accelerate and took the stage win with a content Landis on his wheel.

One more to go

Stage six of Tour de Georgia is the final stage of the tour and very much a sprinters stage. (See stage map & profile). The stage is 190km long with only one KOM early in the stage and finishing with 6 laps of a fast 6km finishing circuit.

Last year, the stage finished in the same way and we saw Gord Fraser (Health Net) come through with the goods to take the sprint with his teammate Greg Henderson finishing right behind him taking second place and the overall sprint jersey.

Floyd Landis has the yellow jersey safely on his back and only has to stay on his bike to keep the lead so his team will work for one more day to keep him safe and the race will be left to breakaway riders or more likely the sprinters.
