When Cyclingnews spoke with Gord Fraser (Health Net/Maxxis) in the team bus before the final stage of the Tour de Georgia, he explained what the ideal situation would be - that a small break of non-contenders for the overall would get up the road and let race leader Tom Danielson and his Discovery Channel teammates set the pace. Well Mr. Fraser, wishes do come true - and you have Andrea Tafi (Saunier Duval-Prodir) to thank. He and three other riders broke away soon after the mid-race feed and kept their advantage onto the finishing circuits, with Discovery Channel leading the peloton most of the way.

The four leaders finally succumbed to the charging peloton with just ten kilometers to go and the sprinters began to lick their lips. Coming to the line it was a mess of riders, but the always fast Gord Fraser found his way to the line, towing the sprint leader Greg Henderson the entire way. Both sat-up on the line with arms extended, celebrating the two victories. "We've really had an up and down Tour of Georgia but we're always very happy to end it up on a winning note," said Fraser. "Since I [won] it last year I had a good idea where to be. I was looking around, had my teammate there Greg Henderson on my wheel so that's my ultimate insurance policy."

Fraser summed up his week in Georgia, saying, "It's what bike racing should be like all the time. If more races were like this, I would probably race another ten years. It's an incredible feeling to have these types of enthusiastic crowds. Let's hope it continues because this is an incredible event."

Meanwhile the yellow jersey crossed the line safely tucked in the pack. "I'm very relieved!" said Danielson. "There were so many fans on the road. I've never been to a race this big before. It was exciting!" When asked how he handled his role as team leader for a day, the twenty-seven year old laughed, replying, "To me, it was stressful...I haven't been in this situation before, with all the pressure - but I was just mini-leader for today!" Danielson gave all of the credit for today to his teammates. "The team was amazing. They just rode tempo and Johan was saying guys were dropping off the back in [groups of] fifteen. In the final, [we] were as strong as the sprinters lead outs."

As for Tafi, the legendary Italian still felt happy with his week in Georgia as one of his last races in a long and successful career. "I tried my all [to win]," said Tafi. "But it's not ending with a victory. Inside me, the time for speaking [with my legs] has stopped. I'm very happy. I finished feeling good....I see I have many, many friends - for this, I am very happy." Tafi also earned the most aggressive rider designation for the stage.

Lance Armstrong finished safely in the pack as well, along side Levi Leipheimer and Bobby Julich, with Floyd Landis farther back in the pack. Levi and Floyd both seemed pleased with their week of racing in Georgia - most of all just to be racing at this level on their home soil. Julich was also happy to be back racing in Georgia, though his focus is set much farther down the road. "When those two guys (Danielson and Leipheimer) attacked yesterday on Brasstown Bald, my main objective was to getting to the top without hurting myself. I was already thinking about my seven days off the bike next week." Julich will be following a similar plan he did last year after the Tour de Georgia. "I'm going up to train at altitude for a month before I head back to Europe." The Dauphine' Libere will be the next big race on his calendar, and possibly for Leipheimer and Landis as well.

Armstrong's near-future plans are pretty well set. "The first thing I do now is soak up as much time with my kids and continue to train, continue to gain fitness." As for Danielson, he only gets a week off the race calendar before returning to Europe to race the Giro d'Italia in support of his teammate Paolo Savoldelli. But before that, he said he will simply enjoy time with his wife.

How it unfolded

The start for stage six was not on top of Brasstown Bald, but it was almost as windy and cold. 41 degree temperatures kept most of the riders in their team vehicles, trying to stay warm before the start. Cyclingnews was rather cold as well, but managed to find a team bus or two to warm-up in before the start.

The riders departed Blairsville for a 4.1 mile neutral start - but that could have been a sixty mile neutral section as the peloton lazily rolled along until the feed zone. After grabbing lunch, it was Andrea Tafi (Saunier Duval-Prodir) who once again attacked the race, in search of one more career win.

Joining Tafi on the down-sloping road to the finish was Danny Pate (Jelly Belly - Pool Gel), Sven Krauss (Gerolsteiner) and Dominique Perras (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada). The quartet of riders held only a small gap at first, but once the Discovery Channel-led peloton realized that none of the four were threatening to the overall, the pace slowed and the gap grew. The only general classification fight was taking place within the break, with Sven Kraus trying to overtake Danny Pate.

The four took both of the Maxxis sprints on the course, with the second just outside the final circuit in Alpharetta. But by the time they entered the circuit, the gap had fallen dramatically to around a minute. With the same finishing circuit as last year the breakaway riders would eventually see the peloton on the opposite side of the road, signaling their demise. But Danny Pate wasn't ready to give up yet. As the pack closed to within twenty seconds, he launched an attack on the break that only Krauss could match.

The duo hung off the front for another half-lap while Tafi and Perras returned to the peloton. Soon though, everyone was caught and the stage was set for a grand finish. Coming up to the finish line with two to go, Mr. Aggressive, Andrea Tafi, attacked again to the delight of the huge crowds. "I wanted to hear the fans again," said Tafi afterwards. And the large crowds obliged.

Unfortunately the pack had other ideas. Tafi was reeled in again and the sprinters moved to the front. Coming up to the line again, around the gradual left turn, it was Navigators trying to form a lead-out and the two speedy Health Net boys picking their way through. "I had Mike Sayers pull off at about a kilometer," said Greg Henderson. "Gord and I were left about sixth and fifth wheel. Navigators were trying to get a train going. At 500 [meters to go] it was Navigators, Floyd, Gord then me. There was a bit of [bumping] and Gord took off at 200-meters to go and I glanced under my arm - it was good!"
