Super Mario Discovers America; Cipollini Wins Stage Two In Columbus

"I'm sorry I waited so long to discover America!" said a delighted Mario Cipollini after his powerful surge to victory on 10th Street in the western Georgia city of Columbus, named so appropriately after his countryman Christopher Columbus "discovered" the New World over half a millennium before. Cyclingnews asked Cipollini about his win as his Domina Vacanze team-mates embraced him in a post-stage celebration and the 37 year old was happy to have notched his 188th career victory and second of the 2004 season. "It's really great satisfaction for me to win here", said a smiling Cipollini, who is clearly delighted with the warm reception he is finding in America. "It's great to be part of this event; not just in a sporting sense, but it's great to see the welcome along the roads from the people and all the schoolkids lined up."

Mario's Domina Vacanze team-mates were all smiles too; his faithful right-hand man Mario Scirea told Cyclingnews post-stage that "we didn't come all this way to America not to win", while Alessio Galletti explained how Domina won the battle of the lead-out trains with Healthnet and Colnago-Landbouwkrediet. "On the last lap, I pulled until 3km to go, and then Scirea and Lombardi took over. We knew we had to wait until the final circuit and our train worked perfectly today. It's a good sign with the Giro d'Italia coming up." Cipo's new American team-mate David Clinger also had a key role today as sweeper, protecting Cipollini's wheel. "It was hard today; I was getting chopped by everyone who was fighting for position behind him," explained the Woodland Hills, CA native who now lives in Andorra.

Although Cipo took the win over Ivan Dominguez (Colavita-Bolla) by a wheel, the outcome might have been closer if the talented Cuban hadn't made the rookie mistake of throwing his bike early. Dominguez tried to jump Cipo with the same move that Alessandro Petacchi has used to bedevil his fellow Tuscan. Cipo was somewhat surprised by the finishing speed of the Cuban sprinter, saying that "(Domina Vacanze) had to take the lead early so we could control the sprint and as I was waiting the right moment to come off Lombardi's wheel, (Dominguez) jumped sooner. We asked Ivan how he dared to jump the vaunted Cipo train and the likeable Cuban smiled, saying "I was behind Gord (Fraser) on the last lap, like ten wheels back and we came through the last corner almost in the same place. He went for a wheel but I decided to keep going because I like a long sprint. I started going, going, going and I was checking the riders on my left. They were like a bike and a half behind me and as we got close to the finish, I got confused with the finish line. I threw my bike at the wrong line and when I went again, it was too late." But the rapid Dominguez was still happy with his performance and certainly will be a man to watch in the remaining sprint finishes in Georgia.

26 year old Ofoto man Scott Zwizanski is a new face on the podium in the Dodge Tour de Georgia, as the former swimmer out of Spring City, Pennsylvania took the first King of the Mountains jersey in this years Tour. Part of the days four man break, Zwisanski told Cyclingnews that "I got in the break and just decided to go for it. In the first sprint, I jumped the other guys and in the second, it was real close with Walters."

One year ago when the inaugural Dodge Tour of Georgia finished in Columbus, it was a diminutive Italian sprinter, Moreno Di Biase who took the stage win in Columbus. This time around, the bigger and better Georgia Tour had the biggest and best Italian sprinter of all time take the winners bouquet: Mario Cipollini.

How It Happened

Starting in the central Georgia hamlet of Thomaston, Stage Two was run in cooler temperatures than muggy Stage One as the Dodge Tour de Georgia parcours traversed west across the Georgia piedmont to Columbus. After a preliminary attack and solo move by Ofoto's Erik Saunders, Mark Walters (Navigators Insurance) made a move that got a gap after 25km and was quickly joined by Zwisanski (Ofoto) and Will Frischkorn (Colavita-Bolla). Tour de France stage winner Jacob Piil bridged across to the trio and as the quartet left Woodland, the gap had risen to 1'30" as the chase behind relented.

Up and down through the piny woods of Georgia, the quartet powered away through Shiloh and up towards the first KOM near Warm Springs, home of FDR's Little White House and Zwisanski took the points. As the peloton passed Dowdells Knob and entered Meriwether County, Maillot Jaune Fraser's Healthnet squad and Cipo's Domina boys kept the gap at 2'05". Frischkorn was Dodge Tour de Georgia leader on the road and the talented 22 year old from Charlottesville, Virginia told Cyclingnews that "we thought that the move would come back eventually but we worked together well the whole way," explained Frischkorn.

Frischkorn took the days sprint points in Pine Mountain after 106km with the gap at 3' back to the peloton. 14km later at the 2nd KOM at FDR State Park with 120km raced. 40km remained before the finishing circuits began in downtown Columbus and the chasers behind upped the pace and 15km later, the gap had dropped to 1'45". At the base of one of the steepest climbs on the stage with 35km to race, Frischkorn flatted and had to chase hard up a 3km climb to rejoin the peloton. "It was unfortunate", Frischkorn laughed philosophically post-stage. "I planned it that way just for fun." Healthnet and Domina continued to pound away behind the break and eventually, the quartet was reeled in just inside the Columbus city limits with 21km to go.

As the three 3.4km finishing circuits began, Healthnet and Domina stopped collaborating and began the battle of the lead-out trains. The American squad battled valiantly for Maillot Jaune Fraser, but with a tired Jason McCartney dropping off and an untimely flat for Chris Wherry, Healthnet were just out muscled and outclassed by Cipo's Domina boys, arguably one of the best in the business at delivering their man to the line.

Post-stage, Cyclingnews caught up with USPS-Berry Floor director Johan Bruyneel. Johan explained that "today was a good day; when we saw there were four guys up the road and Healthnet controlling things, it was positive for us. On the finishing circuits, it's always a little stressful in the last 15km. You want to watch the crashes and the gaps if you are looking at the overall gc."

When we asked Bruyneel about Lance's plans for tomorrow's TT, he told he expected the five-time Tour winner to go all-out for the win. "For us, the Tour of Georgia starts tomorrow. There are a lot of good guys; Julich had an excellent Pays Basque and Voight too. And Horner has won everything (in America) this year. But we have Lance, Ekimov and George (Hincapie). But I think the race will be won in the mountains."

Thursday April 22

Stage Three: Carrolton-Rome / 126km
The opening act of Thursday's tough double stage day is a flat, shortish morning stage that heads north from Carrolton to the attractive town of Rome. Once Stage Three hits Rome, there are three tough finishing circuits of 4.1km including the steep climb of Second St. hill to be confronted. An enterprising rider could escape late on Thursday morning's final to try to gain time before the time test

Stage Four: Rome Individual Time Trial / 30km
The afternoon's time trial is on a testing, out and back course that starts in downtown Rome and heads west out of town to the difficult 4km climb up Radio Springs Rd. to the 432m. Mt. Alto. Stage Four will certainly shake up the overall general classification of the Dodge Tour de Georgia, and Thursdays test shapes up as a battle between Armstrong, Julich and his CSC team-mate Vogt.
