Magnificent McGee takes stage
Crash in final loses Armstrong 27 seconds

Australian Brad McGee (FDJ.Com) made like a kangaroo today in Avranches and hopped past a fading Pedro Horillo (Mapei-Quick Step) in the final meters of the tough uphill sprint to win Stage 7 to Avranches. McGee told French TV in his excellent French that "It was confidence and patience that got me this win today...I did a lot of training for this type of finish."
His win is the second by an Australian in the Tour after Robbie McEwen's Stage 3 victory, and to top it off, all four Aussies in the race finished in the top eight today. When asked about why they have been so successful thus far, McGee replied, "It goes without saying - an Aussie will have a go at anything. There's not many of us!"
Today's stage finished in Avranches, where General George S. Patton Jr. made the key breakthrough the German lines on July 31, 1944. Looming on the horizon like a real-life version of Oz is the magic, magnificent abbey of le Mont-Saint-Michel, long considered on of the wonders of the world. Le Mont-Saint-Michel sits in the tidal estuary of Baie-Mont-Saint-Michel, just west of Avranches, but McGee and the rest of the peloton only had time to gaze at it from their team bus window on the way to the hotel after the stage.

After another hard stage where ONCE rode tempo all day, today's final was nervous and windy. With 4 km to go approaching the base of the climb up to Avranches, a major crash in the nervous peloton brought down 15 riders, among them Oscar Freire (Mapei) and Didier Rous (Bonjour), who broke his collarbone. The break was caught 1km later, at the base of the climb, where another crash involved Lance Armstrong and Laurent Jalabert. Someone ran into Roberto Heras from behind and the Spanish rider, who is always on Armstrong's wheel in the final, crashed into the American's rear wheel. Armstrong put his foot down and managed to avoid crashing heavily. He and Heras got untangled and the rest of the USPS team waited for Lance, who chased all out up the final climb and cut his time loss to 27", dropping on GC from 3rd to 8th.

Today's weather was a fine summer day in Normandy; a cool wind from the English Channel pushed billows of puffy white clouds across the picturesque landscape that seemed to be going either up or down all afternoon long. The road to Avranches traveled around the base of the Cotentin Peninsula, where the Normandy Invasions turned the tide of WW2 in the summer of 1944. Over half a century ago, General George S. Patton's imaginative planning and shrewd judgment made him one of the great combat commanders of World War II. Three generations later, Lance Armstrong and his DS Johan Bruyneel have demonstrated that they, like Patton, are astute tacticians, and despite setbacks like today's crash are ready for the challenge of winning their 4th consecutive Tour De France.
After plenty of attacks in the first half-hour, lanky rouleur Franck Renier (Bonjour) made a strong move and was quickly joined by Leon Van Bon (Domo-Farm Frites) and Antony Morin (Credit Agricole). This trio rolled along all day with a maximum lead of 5'20" just past the feed zone at St.Amand, just 20km from St. Lo, where the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne landed on D-Day.
After lunch, the peloton upped the pace as the trio began to tire from the strong west wind and at Villedieu-les-Poeles, home of fancy French copper cookware, the break had 1'30".
Jean Delatour, Telekom and Alessio had joined the chase and this final collaboration spelled curtains for Renier & Co. They were finally caught with 3 km to race and with a tough uphill finish like last Sundays Stage One, it wasn't going to be a classic sprint.

Powerful Pedro Horillo (Mapei-Quick Step) made a solid move with 1 km to go, getting a gap on Boulevard du Luxembourg, just below Place Patton, but the Vizcayino ran out of legs with 100 metres to go. He threw his arms up in despair as Brad McGee, powering his 54x11, closed down on Horillo, usually Freire's leadout man and rode right by him to his first ever Tour De France win, as did Jaan Kirsipuu.
Tomorrow's Stage 8 is Quatorze Juilliet, otherwise know as Bastille Day is the French equivalent of the American 4th of July, la fete nationale. 217.5km straight across the green heart of Brittany on small "D" roads, perfect for a day of hard bike racing across Ille-Et-Villaine past Rennes, then to Morbihan in southern Brittany, where Stage 8 will end on the Circuit Jean-Yves Perron, with the final climb up the tough Cote du Ty-Marrec, where the 2000 World Championship was raced. Look for Mapei man Andrea Tafi to go on the attack in search of a major win in Plouay.
