Mather Field Criterium

Elk Grove, CA, March 7, 2004

By Sierra Nevada Cycling

Sierra Nevada Cycling competed in another weekend of local racing in the Sacramento area and it was new recruit and cagy veteran Eric Wohlberg who came through with the win on Sunday at the Mather Field Criterium. Eric was part of the six-man winning break which included team mate Ben Jacques-Maynes, two riders from McGuire Reality including Dave Fuentes, Jason Lokkesmoe (Health Net) and Michael Hernandez (Reno Wheelman). The remainder of the field was controlled by the Sierra Nevada team with team Capitan Trent Klasna cracking the whip.

Wohlberg and Jacques-Maynes took their turns in the break which stayed at around 45 seconds for over half of the race, even though Wohlberg was not happy with the numbers. In the last five laps, Wohlberg and Jacques-Maynes took turns attacking the break until Eric got away on the last lap with Lokicesmoe and the other McGuire rider. Eric sat in the coveted third position asLokkesmoe led for most of the last lap.

The man known for his time trialling prowess launched his sprint out of the last corner, taking the win in a photo finish over the McGuire rider, with Jacques-Maynes finishing in fifth.
