Another perfect morning in Melbourne brought riders out in droves, with good fields in all grades. The growth of the E Grade race fields, primarily young junior riders, has been a high light this season, with many of Mick Hollingworth's graduates experiencing success in higher grades already. Rebecca Domange will be the latest graduate after taking the E Grade win this morning, leading home juniors Callum Donnelly, Andrew Barrett and Mitch Sutherland.
Junior riders also dominated the placings in the D Grade race, with the steady pace and perfect conditions enabling virtually the entire field to contest the finish together. Shannon O'Brien sprinted to his first win ahead of Jack Cummings (Bicycle Superstore), while Mark Mennen was the only senior riders to break the junior's stranglehold on the race, holding off Callum Fryer (O'Mara Cycles) for third place.
Carla Lawson (Kelly Cycle Coaching) was another first time winner in the women's division, outsprinting CCCC's chief first aider Melissa Nicholls and Leesa McDonell (Melbourne Bicycle Centre).
Former pro runner Peter Kotsiris (SHM Cycles) farewelled C Grade with an emphatic sprint win after a well timed burst on the final lap. Two juniors were next home, with Scott Berry (Terry Hammond Cycles) faster than Matt Fortunato (Richmond Cyclery) and Neale Adams.
Apryl Eppinger, better known as a track sprinter who represented Australia at the Junior Worlds in Moscow, used her speed to finish ahead of Radelle Berriman (Terry Hammond) and Melissa Kah.
The B Grade race kicked off with an early attack by Robert Regester. He was briefly joined by Rick Jones (Datacom/Burnley Finance) before pushing on alone to keep the big field at bay for over ten minutes. Other riders on the attack in the early stages included Glenn Janetzki and Paul Weymouth (Jones Cycles).
Later in the race, Richard Fuessel and Chris Hunt (Kennedy Cycle Fit) tried to break things up, and a break by Frank Donnelly, Ben Patrick, Oliver Le Grice (O'Mara), Rowan Dever (BikeNOW), regular Tasmanian visitor Andrais Nagy and Sean Carrathers (Terry Hammond) threatened with five minutes to race. Carruthers survived longest, but was quickly swept up once the bunch saw the '3 to go' lap board.
A perfect lead out from team mate Jake King allowed Ben Sanders (Peninsula Star) to take out the bunch sprint, ahead of Matt Bishop (Terry Hammond), Robert Koroknai, Dever and Richard Cormick (Datacom/Burnley), while Lisa Friend (Drapac-Porsche) was the best placed of the women, taking the win ahead of Nikki Matthews and team mate Tess Downing.
The A Grade finish completed a full set of bunch sprints for the day, despite the best efforts of the CCCC/SHM squad to send riders up the road after Warren Nelson's (Terry Hammond) early solo move came to an end. Brendan Rowbotham and Danny Kah featured in a number of the early moves for the 'home team', and other riders to attack early and often included David Sturt (Giant/Pro-Motion), Steve Rankine and Richard England (Priority Health/VIS). Michael Gallagher (VIS) did far more than his share of keeping the bunch in contact during the latter stages of the race.
The Promains boys had faith in four time winner Andrew Stalder, and set a pace high enough for the final three laps that there was no chance of a late escape. Stalder, a former Australian Under 23 champion, duly saluted, holding off England, Dylan Boone (The Rouleur), Nick Walker (CBD Cycles) and Rowbotham, while Nicole Whitburn made her first appearance in the A Grade field and looked comfortable despite the big jump in speed.

Tuesday sees Carnegie Caulfield's final twilight race at Sandown Raceway for the season. Entry is via the Sandown Road entrance (Melways map 80 B6), from 6pm, with all grades racing at 6.30. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80 B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am., and continue until the end of April.
All holders of 2007 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. Licenses are now available at all CCCC events. All returning riders must resume in the grade they last raced in, unless prior arrangement has been made.
