Hilton McMurdo recorded an impressive win in the Jim Thompson memorial Criterium Race. The event, hosted by the Peel Cycling Club and sponsored by the City of Rockingham, continues to attract a top notch field.

McMurdo dominated proceedings in the premier grade, seizing the opportunity to breakaway on completion of the first points sprint. Phil Diesel made a valiant attempt to join McMurdo but was soon back in the confines of the bunch. McMurdo was relentless as he continued to extend his lead lap after lap and in the process secured maximum points in the remaining sprints.

Paul Brown and Mark Petterson had a great battle at the head of the bunch with Brown eventually securing second spot overall from Petterson and with Matt Korten taking fourth.

Such was McMurdo's dominance in A Grade that at the end of the day's racing it placed him at the top of the overall points table, claiming him the Jim Thompson Memorial Trophy for 2007.

B Grade featured a full field with several riders showing their colours early. Steve Marks, Geoff Marshall and Attila Nagy caused headaches leading into the first sprint, but a decisive move from Steve Dodd saw he, Marks and Marshall clear away, leaving the bunch in their wake. The three were never headed, with Marks securing several sprints to claim victory in B Grade with Marshall second, Nagy and Dodd were next in line on the points table.

Brian Buck was clinical in his pursuit to secure a win in C Grade. Buck, in terrific form in recent weeks, took the lead role in a successful breakaway in which he was joined by Paul Slocombe, Allan Clarke and Russell Fryer. The quartet controlled proceedings from that point on to comfortably navigate the open circuit and finish in that order. Further back Doug McDonald and Paul Lewis were ahead of the rest.

D Grade's progress was somewhat steadier with most riders satisfied to let the verdict go down to the sprints. Phil Edwards' attempts to force the pace were smartly nullified by the likes of Leanne Hoffman and Steve Goulds. Hoffman's sprinting prowess saw her finish first overall with Goulds second, Colin Bloomfield third and Jack Iveson fourth.

In E Grade riders were happy to conserve their energy for the tough easterly on the back straight and more so the sprint finish. In the end it did come down to a sprint in the home straight with Joe Cox leading the field to secure line honours. Tom Atkinson was second ahead of Bob Norton and Brian Paxman in fourth. Heather Sanderson was the first lady across the line in a classy E Grade Field.
