Tasmanian Road Championships

August 12, 2007

Cure takes Tassie trifecta

By Rod Morris In Devonport, Tasmania

Amy Cure's dominance of the Tasmanian State road cycling championships was rewarded when she was one of the first named riders in the State team for this month's national titles. Cure won a trifecta of Tasmanian titles, the road race, individual time trial and criterium, which were all held on the North-West Coast.

Whilst the number of entries was surprisingly low for the Tasmanian titles, the quality of performances was above expectations with Cure and Tom Robinson in the Men's Under 19 age group the dominant stars.

The road race was held on Saturday on a tough Stowport circuit which included a hilly 17 kilometre loop. Josh Chugg claimed the men's title ahead of veteran Tim Elmer and newcomer Zane Wright, whilst in the women's race, Kate Warren upset the highly fancied Grace Sulzberger.

The action continued on Sunday when the Individual Time Trials were held at Forth, in a region that had been savaged by overnight rains. Launceston youngster Jack Matthews kicked off his cycling career in fine fashion with victory over pre-race favourite Kodey West in the men's U15 age group while Andrew Smith was a classy winner of the men's U17 category. Jack is the son of Mark Matthews, a former topline triathlete and prominent track cyclist.

Zane Wright caused a surprise in the men's event when he beat Josh Chugg and Tim Elmer over the 20 km out and back course.

Cycling Tasmania president, Mr Garry House announced the Tasmanian State team to compete at the National Championships in Canberra from 31 August - 3 September, following the weekend's events. The 10 rider team will be managed by former national representative, Louise Yaxley and will be coached by Ulverstone's David Walker.

The team includes the Cure sisters from Penguin, Amy and Sarah, Devonport duo Luke Ockerby and Andrew Smith, Ulverstone's Sam Brett and the exciting talent of Jack Matthews.
