Norwood Cycling Club

Regency Park Criterium, Adelaide, South Australia, 30 October 2004

Mueller emerging as rising star

Another good turn out for the Norwood Cycling Club second criterium race of the season. Eighty eight riders took advantage of the perfect sunny weather and big massed start race to get their legs firing. The race was split in two today with would be A, B & C grade riders in the first group while D & E were in another.

The twenty five riders in the lower group went out hard with Deiter Georg going ballistic and attacking thinking the race was only for a few minutes. The bunch held their tempo and stayed together, although the tempo was a little too high for some, but we'll have a grade for them come Tuesday. Eventually Georg sat up and returned to the bunch.

Next to go was Con Bastiras who rode off the front rather quickly and opened a small gap just before receiving two laps to go. All Bastiras's effort was in vain and he was caught just before the finish not having enough for the sprint. Tim Henderson flew out of the pack and easily won the sprint while young Michael Johnstone took second place with former top State sprinter Jason De Ross third.

In the main race it only took five minutes before a serious breakaway occurred with Athens Olympian Chris Jongewaard, TDU rider Adrian Laidler, Josh Smith and Nick Wood who attacked endlessly last week but failed due to a puncture. These four riders rode well to keep away for a major part of the race. Smith ended up losing pace on the break and dropped back to the main group as a counter attack came from the bunch. Peter Mueller, Alex Dimitrivich, Callan Taylor and Russell Gill ended up joining Jongewaard, Laidler and Wood to form a seven strong group. These riders ended up gaining over a minute on the main bunch.

In the last few minutes of the race Taylor ended up dropping back to the bunch as attacks from the small group started to occur. Mueller and Jongewaard attacked together it was now every man for themselves as the group had a commanding lead and would not be caught. Mueller's team mate Laidler would not bridge the gap and forced the others to do the work, Wood was the next to attack trying to now bridge the gap to the two riders in front, Dimitrivich and Gill were left in no mans land.

Wood caught the two and the three would now decide the sprint, but then Laidler attacked Gill and Dimitrivich and tried to get across before the sprint. With all the effort of trying to stay away Jongewaard ran out of legs in the finishing straight and was caught and passed by Laidler. Mueller who would be one of the up and coming brightest stars in SA cycling put in a massive effort for the sprint to easily account for Wood who took second with Laidler just behind to take third. Jongewaard managed to hang on to fourth place from Gill and Dimitrivich. The bunch finished over a minute behind with Gill's father Alan easily taking the bunch sprint with a smile.
