Stage 3 - May 10: Team time trials,

UC-Davis, Whitman emerge atop collegiate road cycling

The University of California - Davis pulled off wins in both the men's and women's team time trial to earn the Division I overall team title on the final day of competition at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships. In Division II Whitman College also used a pair of stellar team time trial performances, including a win by their women, to hold off last year's champion, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and win the team omnium crown. Furman University proved tops in the DII men's team time trial, repeating their victory from a year ago.

The final day of the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships featured team time trial races on an 18-mile loop course in northern Larmier County. In the DI men's competition, the University of California-Davis's determination to earn the team omnium title was apparent as the men's squad of Paul Mach, Phillip Mooney, Will Riffelmacher and Adam Switters posted what would be the fastest time of the day at 35:17:41. The host Colorado State University Rams grabbed the silver in the men's team time trial 1:25 off the winning pace with the foursome of Zack Allison, Erick Carlson, Daniel Lionberg and Daniel Workman. The nearby Buffs of the University of Colorado-Boulder came in third only three seconds behind their Ram rivals.

The UC-Davis women carried on the momentum of their male counterparts, winning the DI women's contest and boosting their squad into the top spot in the team overall. Lisa Auchincloss, Amy Chandos, Larissa Fitchett and Danielle Haulman posted the fastest female time of the day, 1:20 ahead of the Stanford University trio of Arwen Bradley, Rae Brownsberger and Katy Keenan who earned second place. The Buffs of the University of Colorado also grabbed the bronze in the women's event with a time of 42:56:3.

Furman University's squad of Chris Butler, Spencer Beamer, Kit Hunter and Craig McKinney repeated their performance from a year ago, winning the DII men's event by only 11 seconds over Princeton's Nicholas Bennette, Nick Frey and Austin Roach. Whitman College's men's squad used their time of 37:22:9 to help boost their team overall standing.

The winners were apparent in the women's DII team time trial as Whitman, MIT and Yale University posted times more than three minutes ahead of their closest competition. The Whitman squad of Kendi Thomas, Mia Huth, Roxanne Pierson and Emily Rodriguez locked up the team overall with their time of 45:33:9, just ahead of arch rival MIT (Martha Buckley, Yuri Matsumoto, Laura Ralston and Zuzana Trnovcova). Yale's foursome came in at just over 47:00 to round out the top three for the DII women.

In the weekend's team overall, the University of California-Davis jumped from fourth to first in the DI team omnium standings with their wins in the team time trial event, earning the overall team road title for the fourth time in school history (1994, 2001, 2006). Last year's champion Lees-McRae College finished second in the 2009 standings despite another road race national title earned by 15-time national champion Carla Swart. The host Rams of Colorado State University used a balanced attack to finish third in the overall.

Whitman College used a stellar finish in the team time trial and a win by Kendi Thomas in the criterium to earn the DII team omnium crown and return the small Washington school to prominence. 2008 champion MIT had to settle for second despite a strong performance by its women's squad. Western Washington University held steady, repeating its third-place performance from a year ago.

In addition to the Stars-and Stripes national championship jerseys and the medals presented to all podium finishers, the USA Cycling Development Foundation will contribute a total of $5,000 to the top three programs in the final Division I and Division II team standings. As part the USA Cycling Collegiate Performance Awards program, the University of California-Davis and Whitman College will each receive $1,200, while runner-ups Lees-McRae and MIT will each receive $800 and Colorado State University and Western Washington University will each receive $500. Awards are provided to the collegiate club budget to be used for operational and developmental purposes.
