Day 10 - July 15: Junior, U23 criteriums

Norris, Allar Crowned U23 champions; Silva, Miller capture junior 17-18 titles

In the day's featured event, Keith Norris (Miami, Fla./AEG-Toshiba-JetNetwork) claimed the national title in the U23 men's event by using textbook positioning and a unleashing a fast finishing sprint to hold off 174 other riders in a mass sprint finish. Norris, 21, exited the final turn of the four-corner course 200 metres from the finish with a slight gap on the field and held off second-place finisher Cody O'Reilly (Beverly, Mass./Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) and third-place finisher Jacob Keough (Sandwich, Mass./CL Noonan-Coast to Coast) to close U23 competition at the national festival.

"The whole race was much faster than I anticipated," Norris explained. "My plan was to be in the top three coming out of the final turn. I didn't do one pull the whole race and I knew I had to be in the top three entering the last corner. I jumped a good bit before the turn and went into it first."

Throughout the 60-kilometre race, several breakaways tried to escape the field, but the flat course and several powerful teams with big numbers like the Slipstream-Chipotle squad and VMG Racing helped prevent any significant moves from forming.

Primarily a criterium specialist, Norris has had several promising results this season including a second-place effort at the Indio Grand Prix and a fourth-place finish at the Firecracker Criterium.

Erica Allar (Foglesville, Pa./Salamander) was crowned the women's U23 national criterium champion after outsprinting 14 other competitors in the 35-kilometre contest. Allar held off second-place finisher Natalie Klemko (Bristol, Wis./Advil-Chapstick) and bronze medalist Jacquelyn Crowell (Gainsville, Fla./Cycle Science) in a mass sprint finish to earn the national title.

In the men's 17-18 race, Iggy Silva (San Diego, Calif./Rock Racing) took the sprint from a 10-man breakaway that kept the remainder of the 125-rider field at bay in the closing kilometres. After 50 kilometres of racing, Silva outsprinted second-place finisher Alfredo Cruz (San Ysidro, Calif./Major Motion) and Andy Baker (Easley, S.C./Time) to claim the top spot on the podium.

Sinead Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./UPMC) won the field sprint finish of the women's 17-18 event to claim the national title over runner-up Missy Erickson (Alexandria, Va./MNJRC) and third-place finisher Samantha Schneider (West Allis, Wis./Mesa Cycles) in a 25-kilometer contest.

In the junior men's 10-12 event, Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Capital Bicycle Racing Club) soloed to a victory by 7.2 seconds, while Pedro Zaragoza (El Paso, Texas/Major Motion) won the field sprint for second place and Max Mancuso (Greentown, Pa./Skylands Cycling) finished third.

Katrina Howard (Fresno, Calif./Central Valley Cycling) picked up a national title in the women's 10-12 age group by outsprinting Sarah Huang (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Velosport) to the finish line. Two seconds back, Michelle Blake (Orlando, Fla./Colavita Central Florida) finished third to take home the bronze medal.

In the men's 13-14 class, Ben Gabardi (Collierville, Tenn./Memphis MotorWerks) won the field sprint finish of the 20-kilometre contest to claim the stars-and-stripes jersey. Justin Koelbl (Fairfax Station, Va./Warrenton Cycling) rode to a second-place finish and Cory Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Major Motion) finished third.

Another field sprint finish was the result of the women's 13-14 category as Ashlyn Gerber (Sanford, Fla./Team Swift) won the 20-kilometre race over silver medalist Kaitlyn Lawrence (Emmaus, Pa./Vortex) and Antonina Esposto (Blandon, Pa./Young Medalists).

In the women's 15-16 category, once again it was Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Kahala-LaGrange) who rode to a national title. Rivera, who already captured stars-and-stripes jerseys in the road race and time trial, held off Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/Sugar Cycles-Specialized) by 1.3 seconds in the 20-kilometre race, while Elspeth Huyett (Alburtis, Pa./Young Medalists) finished third with the same pack time.

In the men's 15-16 category, 94 men lined up to compete for a national title and weathered a driving rainstorm in the closing laps before Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass./CCB-Volkswagen) finished ahead of A.J. Meyer (Cohutta, Ga./Hincapie-Bianchi) and Robin Eckman (Boulder, Colo./TIAA-CREF-5280) in the 25-kilometer race.

The 2007 USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs presented by California Giant Berry Farms continues on Monday as the top U.S. women cyclists in the country will compete for a national title in the elite women's road race and amateur men will race for a national championship in the elite men's road race. Set for an 8:00 a.m. local time start, the elite women will cover 92 kilometres while the men will race 138 kilometres beginning at 12:00 p.m.
