Caisse d'Epargne remembers Gálvez with a win

Twelve months after Isaac Gálvez won the second stage of this race, another Majorcan rider from the Caisse d’Epargne team triumphed in a big sprint for the line. Vicente Reynes beat his team-mate Jose Joaquin Rojas and Tomas Vaitkus (Discovery Channel) in a 65-man sprint into Cala Bona, with Rojas taking over the lead.
The flat 159.4 kilometre stage was run off in mild conditions but strong gusting winds and a three man breakaway helped create the conditions for a big split in the bunch. Yesterday’s winner Oscar Freire (Rabobank) came home in the second half of the peloton, 2’48 down, and slipped right back in the overall standings.
"To win a stage of the Mallorca Challenge was one of my objectives", said a delighted Reynes. "I am very satisfied with my victory and also because all the team is showing how strong it is, and that we have various possibilities to get the [overall] victory.
"The sprint was very difficult and we needed the photo-finish to determine who the winner was. This stage was a very nervous and tough one because of the winds which blew throughout the whole day.
He takes a big confidence boost from what he has achieved. "This victory is very good from a psychological point of view and a great motivation for the next races. Particularly the Classics, my main aims for the season."
His teammate José Joaquín Rojas is now leading Reynes and Vaitkus in the general classification and while he missed out on a possible win, he is happy with how things are going. "I raised my arms while passing the line, because I thought I won the stage," he said, "but the important thing is that the victory stays within the team. And the team is really great! Yesterday we just missed the victory.
"Today we are the first and the second and are now also leading the general classification. I hope we will do as well during all the Challenge. I think that with Vicente Reynes, Luis León Sánchez and Fran Pérez, who are good climbers and are in good very good shape, we have many possibilities to win the general classification."
A total of 53 riders end the day locked in on the same time. Tomorrow’s 149.6 kilometre stage to Mirador Des Colomer sees the riders climbing the second category Coll de Soller and then the first category Puig Major, ensuring that this list of contenders will be thinned down quite a bit.
How it unfolded
200 riders lined out for the start of the second day of the race, which began in the seaside village of Cala Millor and covered a 159.4 kilometre loop before finishing in nearby Cala Bona. The day was once again bright and mild but a strong, gusting wind was certain to make things tough for some.
After an short-lived breakaway attempt by Miguel Alzamora (Selección Española Pista) inside the first fifteen kilometres of racing, three riders succeeded in getting clear and opening up a decent lead. Former world junior champion Kai Reus, Iban Mayoz (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Jesus Tendero (Viña Magna-Cropu) broke away at the 22 kilometre point and had a lead of just under three minutes when Mayoz took the first Meta Volantes sprint in San Llorenç.
This lead continued to escalate until it reached a maximum of 15’34 at kilometre 51. Mayoz (not to be confused with Iban Mayo, who left the Basque team at the end of last season), beat Tendero and Reus for Meta Volantes sprint two at Llucmajor, 77.5 kilometres after the start.
The peloton were chasing hard and with the gap falling towards the ten minute mark, Reus left the two others and to try to press on ahead. However Mayoz and Tendero rejoined him at the 98 kilometre mark, only for the latter to lose contact almost straight away.
The Saunier Duval team were setting the pace behind in an effort to haul back the two leaders and this had the effect of splitting the peloton in two. Reus was first to the top of the fourth category climb at s’Espinagar (km 125) and kept going, doing what he could to hold off a hard-chasing front group.
With 15 kilometres to go, he had 55 seconds over the nearest pursuers and a further 1’15 over the rest. However, despite riding himself inside out to stay away, he was reeled in with less than three kilometres to go. That set things up for a big sprint and the success of Reynes over Rojas and Vaitkus.
