Garzelli gets it with a special sprint

Italian Stefano Garzelli (Liquigas) won the 45th edition of Rund um der Henninger Turm when he outsprinted German champion Gerald Ciolek (Team Wisenhof) and comeback-kid Danilo Hondo (Team Lamonta) in Frankfurt this afternoon. Garzelli was awarded the win, although emotions ran high over his somewhat questionable sprint whereby he first shut out Hondo on the left side of the road before moving to the other side with Ciolek on his inside.
The race around the tower was dominated by T-Mobile and Gerolsteiner, even though the pre-race had centred on last year's winner Eric Zabel and his Milram team. The skies were heavy with rain as the 163 riders started the 190 kilometre loop. The attacks started straight away when Czech rider Lubor Tesar (Wiesenhof) and Dutchman Jens Mouris (Team Regiostrom) went away. They were chased by Werner Riebenbauer (Team Vorarlberg), and he in turn was later followed by Michael Rogers (T-Mobile). Rogers eventually caught up with Riebenbauer, but the duo up front had a good five minutes lead over them, and another two minutes advantage over the peloton that was driven by the pink clad Kaiku team at this time.
Mouris suffered a minor incident where he took a wrong turn and ended up among parked cars, but was soon back on track - meanwhile, Rogers had dropped Riebenbauer and shortly after, the Australian found himself back in the peloton too. With 112 kilometres to go, Patrick Sinkewitz, Steffen Wesemann (T-Mobile), Andrea Moletta, Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) and Jens Voigt (CSC) attacked. The duo at the front were tiring but Mouris couldn't follow the pace set up by Tesar; Moletta also found the going too tough and so Wegmann joined the other riders in their five man group over the climbs.It was then time for Wesemann, Sinkewitz and Voigt to form their own group and break away.

With 88 kilometres to go, Wesemann was dropped by Sinkewitz and Voigt, with those two forming a strong duo in pursuit of Tesar. They passed him as they started to build an ominous gap ahead of the peloton. Back in the peloton, German continental team Lamonta were chasing for their top class sprinter Danilo Hondo, and Gerolsteiner were awaiting the penultimate climb of the day for Rebellin. The duo of Sinkewitz and Voigt continued to work well together, although Sinkewitz looked to be the hungrier of the two, and took long pulls at the front, proving that his top five placings at Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallone and Liege-Bastogne-Liege were no fluke.
They built a gap of two minutes, but as Rebellin hit the climb with 70 kilometers to go, he brought with him a group that included Grischa Niermann (Rabobank), Christophe Brandt and Björn Leukmans (Davitamon), Steffen Wesemann and Sergei Ivanov (T-mobile), Stefano Garzelli (Liquigas) Alessandro Petacchi (Milram), Bert Grabsch (Phonak), Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), Igor Astarloa (Barloworld), Luca Ascani (Naturino) and Gerhard Trampusch (Wiesenhof). Alberto Losada (Kaiku) and Patrick Calcagni (Liquigas) bridged when the gap to the peloton was some 20 seconds, but unfortunately for the lucky two, the break would go no further.
As the peloton caught up with the break, a few moments of relaxation saw Torsten Schmidt (Wisenhof) and Matej Mugerli (Liqiuigas) jump away, hoping that a strong break would catch up with them on the last climb of the day. Their wish came true, but only Mugerli managed to follow Rebellin when he used his previous tactics on the last climb of the day, with 39 kilometres to go. With Rebellin came Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile), Ricardo Serrano (Kaiku), Johann Tshopp (Phonak) and Alexander Kolobnev (Rabobank). Back in the peloton, Petacchi and Zabel's Milram teammates were notably abscent, and Lamonta had gathered their full team at the front.

Christophe Brandt, Stefano Garzelli, Bert Grabsch and Stefan Schumacher chased Rebellin's group, but didn't receive any reward for catching it as the peloton swallowed the diminuitive Italian's group for a second time. The leading duo were still strong, but the gap was coming down as they approached the final three laps around the finish. T-Mobile's Sergei Ivanov followed a strong attack by Rabobank's Marc De Maar, and when De Maar finally caught Voigt and Sinkewitz after a hard chase, Ivanov naturally attacked. De Maar worked with the help of Voigt to bring him back, and they only succeeded as the peloton caught up with them all. Ivanov attacked again on the last lap, but was reeled in by a slightly disorganised peloton.
Not one team could form a proper lead out, and the race was wide open. German champ Ciolek was well placed, as was Stefano Garzelli, who got on the wheel of Petacchi as the Italian super sprinter offered his services to team mate Zabel. The German veteran was unable to follow, and missed the opportunity of fighting for the victory. Garzelli took full advantage of Petacchi's speed and was the strongest sprinter in the bunch, together with 19-year-old Ciolek who came within inches of the former Giro d'Italia winner over the line.
