Day 4 - July 9: Junior road races

Juniors ride to road titles in Seven Springs

By Andy Lee, USA Cycling

As top American pros race across the countryside of France in pursuit of a Tour de France title, the future of U.S. cycling was at Seven Springs Resort in southwestern Pennsylvania Sunday for USA Cycling’s junior road national championships. As part of the two-week long USA Cycling National Festival, eight races marked the annual pursuit of a stars-and-stripes jersey for aspiring young riders from across the nation. And if domestic success is any indicator of international potential, recently crowned national champions Chris Barton (Ojai, Calif./Bicycles of Ojai) and Arielle Filberti (Worcester, Mass./Hot Tubes Development) have promising careers ahead of them.

Barton and Filiberti rode to victories Sunday in the internationally recognized junior categories, each earning automatic nominations to represent the United States at the UCI Junior World Championships in Belgium in August. Barton captured the junior men’s 17-18 road race after attacking the remnants of a six-man breakaway in the closing minutes of the 98-kilometer race, earning a national title and a ticket to the world championships. Filiberti matched Barton’s effort in the junior women’s 17-18 race, winning a three-up sprint at the conclusion of the 88-kilometer race ahead of fellow competitors Lauren Shirock (Emmaus, Pa./South Mountain Cycles) and Jacquelyn Crowell (Maitland, Fla./Colavita). Filiberti’s result also earned her an invitation to Belgium.

In the men’s race, Barton bridged up to an earlier breakaway to form a lead group that contained top riders Ben Bradshaw (Winchester, Calif./IE Bikes), Alex Howes (Golden, Colo./Team 5280-eSoles), Kevin Soller (Breckenridge, Colo./Century Tel-VRAD), Walker Savidge (Breckenridge, Colo.) and Harrison Tripp (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif./Kahala LaGrange). Together, the leaders amassed a two-minute gap on the peloton and solidified themselves as the favorites to take home a national title. After two laps of a 44-kilometer circuit, the group remained together, but as they entered the 9.5-kilometer finishing circuit the pace split the field apart and Barton emerged as the strongest rider, crossing the line 26 seconds ahead of Bradshaw for the stars-and-stripes jersey.

“It was my last chance to attack,” explained Barton of his winning move in the final kilometers. “I was coming into the final stretch to the finish, so I just pedaled harder.”

Bradshaw was an attendee of the USA Cycling Junior Talent Identification Camp at the Olympic Training Center in March and earned a trip to Europe to compete for the U.S. National Team this Spring. Soller was also an invitee for the camp and Savidge a former national champion mountain biker, further showing the depth of the field over which Barton reigned victorious.

Prior to Barton’s win, he was the current leader of a points-based race series used to determine an automatic nomination to the world championships.

In the women’s race, Filiberti, Shirock, and Crowell were clearly the strongest competitors in the 11-rider field. Shirock, Friday’s criterium winner, and Crowell, Thursday’s time trial winner survived the selective course along with Filiberti as the trio remained together until the closing meters. In the end, Filiberti had just enough power in her legs to hold off Shirock by four seconds and Crowell by nine.

In the men’s 15-16 category, Nick Bax (Bethesda, Md./Hot Tubes Development) set the pace for the peloton that resulted in a final selection of five riders. Bax outsprinted Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./SyMed-Moab) by four seconds for the win.

Jacqueline Kurth (Palm City, Fla./Athletes by Design) captured the junior women’s 15-16 category.

In the 13-14 categories, Broday Walker (Wichita Falls, Texas/Richardson Bike Mart) captured the men’s national title and Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Major Motion) took home the title in the women’s race.

In the youngest national championship categories, John Funk (Topeka, Kan./GP Velotek) completed the sweep, winning the junior men’s road title to go with his time trial and criterium wins earlier in the week and Katrina Howard (Fresno, Calif./Central Valley Cycling) won the national title in the junior women’s 10-12 event.

The 2006 USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs continues on Monday with the men’s U23 road race.
