World champion close to hour recordman

Triple world champion Michael Rogers came close to finally winning with his rainbow jersey, but he found someone stronger than him, although it was only by two seconds: Czech time trial champion Ondrej Sosenka went faster than him. "I probably did well looking at the course precisely this morning, because I believe I've made the difference in the corners," the winner said. "It wasn't a technical circuit like at the World Championship. It was hard because of the strong head wind at the beginning but I've loved that course. I've also been impressed by the organisation of the event."
The Chrono des Herbiers is one of the very few time trials remaining on the UCI calendar. In this part of the world, near the location of the prologues of the Tour de France in 1993 and 1994, people still appreciate the effort against the clock. "Time trialling is what you need to perform in stage races," underlined the patron for the race this year, Stephen Roche.
The Chrono des Herbiers is called "the hour record on the road," because the winning time is always close to one hour, the record being held by Jean Nüttli with 59 min. 45 sec. "It wasn't possible to go that fast today because of the wind," Sosenka said. "But I'd like to come back to score a better time. My other goal is to improve my record on the track. I believe the magic limit of 50 kilometres is reachable."
Unknown in France, Sosenka has scored his first win in this country. "I can't be disappointed," Rogers commented. "I had a good ride and Sosenka had an even better one. I'm happy with what I did today."
Third, the Russian champion Vladimir Gussev was also happy. "The day before I was riding the Tour of Lombardy, so it wasn't easy to do a time trial after that, but I'm pleased with the way things went today." He finished ahead of Latvian champion Raivis Belohvosciks and Belgian young star Olivier Kaisen, who had won the Chrono des Herbiers last year, as an U23. "I targeted a top 15, I couldn't imagine I'd go that well," the future Davitamon-Lotto rider said. This gives a very positive impression for RAGT's last appearance in competition.
