Higgerson poised

Reigning Australian mountain bike champion, Chris Jongewaard upstaged a class field to claim victory in today's sixth stage of the Tattersall's Cup Jayco Tour of Tasmania, which hit the North-West Coast of the Apple Isle. Jongewaard formed part of a three man breakaway on the Sheffield kermesse 3.2 km circuit and then found his sprint legs to beat Victorian Darren Lapthorne and Queensland's Peter Herzig in the final hit out.
But the overall lead in the tour remained safely in the hands of Sydney rider Shaun Higgerson, with three stages remaining. Higgerson started the day 12 seconds in front of Tour of Gippsland winner Gordon McCauley of New Zealand, but two stages later, Higgerson had increased his lead to 33 seconds and McCauley was almost certainly out of contention. McCauley was 20th in the Deloraine to Sheffield stage, but lost 54 seconds to Higgerson, who coasted home in 10th place. The afternoon stage saw Higgerson, Clarke and McCauley lose 30 seconds to the winner - Jongewaard - and hold onto their General Classification placings.
In the afternoon, Jongewaard, Lapthorne and Herzig posed no threat to the leaders on GC and were allowed a little bit of leeway to get up the road. On a tight circuit, some riders took unnecessary risks, raising the ire of Higgerson.
"I'm now in a position I could win this tour and I didn't want to run the risk of a broken collarbone, by some riders sprinting for 40th position," Higgerson said. "I've got a 33 second lead and I really think I can hold onto it till the end."

With two criteriums and only one road stage remaining, it will be the George Town to Beauty Point race tomorrow afternoon that should settle the top positions.
Jongewaard said he was surprised with his win in the Sheffield Kermesse. "I wasn't expecting to do anything special this week, I was basically using the tour as a training event as I step up my preparation for the Australian Mountain bike Championships in January," he said. "I would really like to defend my national title and its races like this that help."
Jongewaard will also race in the series ending Tour of the Murray River in a fortnight.
The Tour of Tasmania continues tomorrow with a criterium in George Town before riders tackle Stage 8 over to Beauty Point. The tour will finish on Sunday with a criterium in Launceston.
