Top German sprinter Erik Zabel (Telekom) has won the first stage of his national tour, which finished in Altenburg in a bunch sprint today. Zabel beat Stuart O'Grady (CA) and Gerrit Glomser (Saeco) in the sprint, after the peloton caught solo breakaway Jorgen Bo Petersen (Team fakta) with two kilometres to go.

Unfortunately, the stage was overshadowed by the death of 23 year old Fabrice Salanson (Brioches la Boulangere), who died in his sleep early on Tuesday morning (see separate story). Although the cause of death has yet to be established, Salanson's team withdrew itself from the race and headed back to France.

After a minute's silence for the death of Salanson, the remainder of the field set off from Dresden as planned, with 184.1 hilly kilometres in front of them. The first hour was marked by some very aggressive racing, with Erik Zabel winning the first intermediate sprint at Dippoldiswalde (km 33.9), in front of James Vanlandschoot and Stuart O'Grady. 3 km later, Jorgen Bo Petersen (fakta) and Lars Wackernagel (Team Wiesenhof) attacked the field and gained a small lead that gradually increased over the next few kilometres.

Petersen was riding hard for the points on the Cat. 3 climb of Sadisdorf, which he won, but Wackernagel was unable to follow the Dane's pace and dropped back. That left Petersen alone in the lead, and he just kept going. By the 100 km point, his lead had extended to nearly 11 minutes as the peloton sat in cruise mode for much of the stage. Eventually, Saeco got on the front with five riders to try and reduce the gap, and the peloton gathered momentum as it headed down towards Altenburg.

With 45 km to go and after having spent 100 km in the lead, Jorgen Bo Petersen was only 5 minutes in front of the charging peloton. The gap was now coming down rapidly as Gerolsteiner, Telekom, Crédit Agricole and Saeco rode at a high tempo in front. He could have been caught earlier had there not been a lull in the pace with 25 km to go, but Quick.Step and Phonak revitalised the chase and the gap came down to 1'45 with 12 km to go.

From here it seemed possible that Jorgen Bo could hang on, but he was exhausted from his efforts and the peloton swallowed him at 2 km to go. Alexandre Vinokourov had done a lot of work for Telekom, before Wesemann and Hondo took over to give Erik Zabel an excellent leadout for the sprint. Zabel triumphed comfortably over O'Grady and Glomser, and will wear the leader's jersey going into tomorrow's stage from Altenburg to Kronach, which should also suit the sprinters.
