More than 800 cyclists will descend on Fitchburg, Massachusetts Thursday to begin the Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic stage race. First held as a single day race in 1960, Fitchburg-Longsjo has evolved into one of the major races on the U.S. calendar. Fitchburg-Longsjo Memorial began in 1960 in memory of Art Longsjo who earned his name as the first American ever to compete in the winter and summer Olympics in the same year. As a speed skater, Art began cycling for training and before long was competing at a national and international level. Art died tragically in a car accident in the midst of his glory days. . Eventually the race was extended from a one day classic to a four-day stage race and remains one of the most popular stage races in the US.

This year's event features once again an all-star field for both men's and women's competitions, as Saturn's Chris Horner looks to defend his 2002 title. Absent from the race will be four time winner of the women's event Lyne Bessette due to a clash with the Candian National Championships.

The four day race begins on Thursday, June 26 with the Royal Plaza Time Trial. Stage 2 continues with the Aubuchon Hardware Circuit Race, followed by stage 3 at the summit of Wachusset Mountain and the final stage in downtown Fitchburg, the Worker's Credit Union Criterium.
