Downpour ends summer series finale

The final race in the Carnegie Caulfield Summer Criterium series saw the early grades just complete their races before a down pour forced the cancellation of the A and B Grade races.

C Grade rode an attacking race, with Chelsea pair Andrew Stewart and Michael Kilkenny often forcing the pace. Veteran Bill Upston made a couple of efforts to escape the field but couldn't find anyone with legs strong or willing enough to join him in a lasting effort.

The victory went to visiting Latrobe Valley rider John Mackenzie, who rode clear with around 10 minutes remaining, and was able to hold off the chase from the bunch. In a tight sprint for second, Chris Taplin (Richmond Cyclery) overhauled Trevor Smith (Hankook Tyres) at the line, with the final placing going to Andrew Stewart. Meaghan Godfrey made further in roads into paying off the new carbon fibre Giant taking out the Women's division ahead of Melissa Sandford and the newly wed Cheryl Walker.

First time rider Sam Brown (Terry Hammond Cycles) pulled off the coveted first up win in D Grade. Convinced to try racing by Sun Tour legend and Bayside shop owner Terry Hammons and super mechanic Jamie Kelly, the 16 year old proved a quick learner. He attacked the bunch with St Kilda youngster Simon Florentine and the pair pulled away from the bunch in the final 15 minutes, with Brown proving too quick at the finish.

Adrian Grech lead the bunch home from John Groves, while Gemma Goyne lead the Women home ahead of Erin Downing and Melissa Nicholls.

The first of the Club's winter races is next Sunday, a Kermesse at Dalmore Drive, Scoresby (Melways Map 72 F8). C and D Grades start at 9am, with A and B following at 10am. Full details of the Regional Winter fixture can be found at the Club's website, www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
