Demaret takes double victory

With more than 100 riders within just fourteen seconds of the Tour de Picardie lead, the third stage was a battle for seconds which was won by the young Frenchman, Jean Eudes Demaret (Cofidis). The 23-year-old was part of a breakaway which, for the second stage in a row, held a slim lead in the final metres. Demaret out-sprinted the Dutch pursuiter Jens Mouris (Mitsubishi Jartazi) and Slipstream's Kilian Patour as Ignas Konovalovas (Credit Agricole) followed in fourth.
Demaret now leads Mouris by just two seconds, while stage two victor Martin Elmiger is in third, one second further in arrears. "In the final part, we started looking at each other. Francis (van Londersele) told me I had a good chance of victory and asked me to remain focused. I really wanted to win but when I crossed the finish line, I wasn't sure I had won. It's a huge satisfaction for me and it shows I have my place in the pack".
The day's stage got off to a fast start under cloudy skies, with the peloton staying together until the first intermediate sprint at Fouilloy (km 13.5). Sébastien Chavanel (FdJ) took out the time bonus over yellow jersey holder Elmiger and former leader Sebastian Siedler. After the sprint, eight men attacked and achieved clearance: Mouris, Maarten Tjallingii, Demaret, Patour, Piet Rooijakkers (Skil Shimano), Lloyd Mondory (AG2R), Konovalovas and Ronning Vinther Troels (Collstrop), the latter suffering a puncture getting caught by the bunch.
The seven remaining leaders reached the only climb, the Côte de Liomer, where Demaret led the way ahead of Konovalovas and Tjallingii. The escapees then increased their advantage to a maximum 1'46 at kilometre 46.
Halfway through the short stage, the pack gradually increased its pace, bringing the gap down to 50" with 25 kilometres to go. Mouris, Demaret, Patour and Konovalovas decided to shed their companions, and Mondory, Tjallingii and Rooijakkers were caught by the pack at kilometre 72.
The last ten kilometres resembled a team pursuit with all four escapees doing their part of the work trying to remain clear from the chasing pack led by the favourites' teams. With five kilometres to go, the front group still enjoyed a 30" lead, and began contemplating victory. With 500 metres to go, Demaret made his effort and beat Mouris and Patour to the line.
Ten seconds behind, Van Avermaet led the bunch home ahead of Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom) and Siedler. Thanks to the bonus seconds claimed on the finish line, Demaret captured the yellow jersey with a two second lead over Mouris.
