Featherweights rule Nez's uphill TT

The Northstar Resort near Lake Tahoe in northern California played host to a picturesque and scenic time trial in the second stage of the Tour de Nez. Unfortunately for the racers, the course pointed straight up for the entire distance, making it difficult for them to enjoy the scenic vistas. The course rose 192 metres over the 2.75km, making it an average of 14 percent for the entire distance. And the steepness showed on the riders, with everyone in their small ring and getting out of the saddle often to keep the pace high. BMC's Ian McKissick tore up the hill faster than anyone for a 16 second win ahead of Health Net-Maxxis team-mates Matt Cooke and Corey Collier.

"I guess I liked it because I ended up winning!" McKissick said about his thoughts on the course, even though it was at 6,000 feet of altitude. "I live in Seattle at sea level it tends to hurt a little more. It was interesting to ride non-TT bikes and helmets, so it made it more fair for everyone."

McKissick has had success in uphill time trials before, at the San Dimas race. "I've had some decent luck with them, I got second at San Dimas to Scott Moninger last year. And the year before I won the cat 2 race."

The result, following a short criterium last night, gives McKissick the overall race lead. But due to the short overall distance the time gaps are still small, with 25 other riders within a minute of the lead. And the lead is not totally what McKissick came to this race for, but is now finding it as a goal. "I was originally on the Suisse roster, so I was building hard for that. When I wasn't selected for the team I shut it down and now I am building back up for Cascade. We would love the win, but it's just to make sure the crit tonight is not a GC crit."

Matt Cooke sounded genuinely surprised when he found out he was second place, but said his light weight probably contributed to his and other top results. "I'm one of the lightest guys in the race," he said. "I weigh a 130 lbs. so it really helps, but it also will help me going forward.

"I think that everyone is still really close to each other," he said "Today was a good result but that isn't how it's going to end up."

Indeed, everyone is looking ahead to the new road race stage here at the Northstar Resort, which will include today's climb but 10 times. "I think it's going to be hard, no matter who you are," said McKissick. "It's going to be a race of attrition and the strongest guy will win. I don't think a team will be able to control it and I think a single guy will be able to ride away."

"There are some good guys here, I consider Justin England a threat," said Cooke. "Then the Bissell guys have the numbers and the strength. It's up to them and it makes chasing a little bit easier. Since we go up this climb in the road race I think it will be a big factor."

Tonight's criterium in downtown Truckee will be another party atmosphere with Alex Candelario (Kelly Benefits Strategies-Medifast) calling out the sprint win after last nights solo attempt. Paging Babe Ruth?
