Stage 5 - January 27: San Luis - San Luis, 144.5km

Martin Garrido wins in his country

By Hernan Alvarez

Local Martin Garrido (Palmeiras Resort-Tavira) was the best of the Tour de San Luis in Argentina. He took not only the prologue time trial but also the second timed event, and commanded the classification from beginning to end to finally achieve the UCI 2.2-ranked race. Garrido finished 19th in the final stage in San Luis city on Sunday where Juan José Haedo (CSC) got his second day win in the tour.

Garrido clocked a global time of 15 hours, 31 minutes and 25 seconds. His compatriot Gerardo Fernandez (San Luis Argentina) couldn't crop the gap with the leader and ended up second in 15 hours, 32 minutes and 31 seconds. Meanwhile, defending champion Jorge Ciantini (Scott-Marcondes) finished third, riding three seconds slower than Fernandez.

The original parcours of stage five was 144.5 kilometres long but it was reduced (considering the rain and the strong winds) by 20 kilometres to prevent accidents like the one in stage one.

The young race proved to be a good competition for riders in their early-season, and surely it will grow in the next years while the organization continues to improve.
