Danny Pate (Jelly Belly-Pool Gel) shocked nobody today by going in an early break and lapping the field. The former U23 world time trial champion is flying this year, coming off an amazing performance at the USPRO championships. Yesterday, he and teammate Brice Jones lapped the field with fourteen other riders, and the two other Jelly Belly-Pool Gel teammates remaining at this year's Superweek ignited the field with a sizzling lead-out with the sprinter Jones taking the win.

Today, it was up to Pate to take advantage of the lead-out with Alex Candelario and Dave McCook setting the pace. "Dave and Alex were awesome," explained Pate. "Alex went from the first turn and down the back stretch -- and then Dave went so hard I lost his wheel and I couldn't get around him!" But since Pate was up a lap on his teammate, the win went to him with McCook winning the field sprint for seventh.

"I was amazed we lapped the field so fast, but the key teams had a rider in it," said Pate. "After that, it was so fast! Faster than I would have liked it to be!" One of the reasons for the pace increase was the sprint competition featuring Frank Pipp (Advantage Benefits/Endeavour) tied with Emile Abraham (Monex.) With four sprint laps on the menu, Pipp and Abraham stayed close to each other. However with Advantage Benefits/Endeavour represented in the break, the team once again had a triple burden of defending the sprint and overall jerseys along with riding for a possible stage win with Nicholas Reistad.

"It's really tough with three races going on," said Reistad. "We've got guys working for all three, rotating triple duty." Teammate Frank Pipp decided to risk working solo today so that his teammates could focus on the other two areas. "I said to my teammates that I would go freelance today," Pipp explained. "We tried to ride hard for Nick because he has worked really hard."

Taking the opposite tack was Monex, led by veteran sprinter and team director Roberto Gaggioli. After the two leaders traded points on the first two sprints, Monex sent two riders to the line for points in an attempt to put a buffer between Pipp and Abraham. That plan worked for the third sprint with Josh Goodwin placing himself between Abraham and Pipp. "Roberto would lead out the back and Josh would lead to the finish," Abraham said. "As the races go on our riders get fitter, and the team spirit is now up. We really want the red jersey!"

The battle for fastest man in Milwaukee moves to the northside streets tomorrow night for the Great Downer Avenue criterium, featuring a tight triangle-shaped course and crowds as big as they were in Kenosha tonight!
