16th GP Camon - U23 NE

Italy April 11, 2004

Results

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 Team Manager

Sunday's race was an Elite National race in San Bernadino, near Ravenna. The course started with a flat loop around the town, then headed to the hills where they did 4 laps of a tough course on the outskirts of Imola before a flat run to the finish after one more loop of town. Our team consisted of Aaron Kemps (AIS/QAS), Bernard Sulzberger (AIS/TIS), Richard Moffatt(AIS/NSWIS), Mark Jamieson (AIS/TIS), Nic Sanderson (AIS/VIS), Ashley Humbert AIS/NSWIS), Ryan Sullivan (AIS/TIS) and mountain bike team member, Daniel McConnell (VIS). Other Aussies at the race were Gene Bates (Ex-AIS/SASI) riding for Italfine and David Betts (Ex-AIS/QAS) riding for Bibanese.

The race started sedately but came to life in the hills. The Australians rode very well to come out of the hills with the whole team in tact, as well as the other two riding for Italian clubs. The team helped chase a small breakaway group for much of the run back to town and over the last 10 kilometres, dominated the chase and caught the fugitives inside the last kilometre. Unfortunately Aaron Kemps was blocked for a run and was unable to repay the team with a better result than 10th. The win was taken by Gianluca Geremia from Zalf.
