Day 2 - June 25: Elite Men/Women/Junior Men's Criteriums, 80/50/60 km

Winning by numbers

By Tomas Nilsson

The Swedish Island province of Gotland isn't known for its cyclists, more for hosting the national betting and lottery company. But now it has its first Swedish elite cycling champion in 19 year old Thomas Lövkvist (Team Bianchi Scandinavia) in the Short Circuit event in Sunne.

His team used its superiority in numbers (and by all means strength) by sending Tobias Lergård in front after a couple of laps. When he was reeled in, a four man breakaway was formed containing Bianchi's Petter Renäng with fakta pros Fredrik Modin (racing for Team Mälarenergi here) and Thomas Grönqvist (ECI Champion) plus Jan Mattsson (Upsala CK).

"When two of them were left behind and I was left alone with Grönqvist, the team decided to take it easy and not risk the win in a two up sprint," said Renäng.

When the pair was reeled in Lövkvist attacked with a lap and a half to go and managed to put almost a minute between himself and the peloton. Bianchi's Jonas Holmkvist took second after a late attack.

In women's race Madeleine Lindberg had no problems winning solo in the absence of World Champion Susanne Ljungskog, who is concentrating on the road race on Saturday. Junior rider Caroline Asplund took a sensational second place.
