TNT Sports, the UK broadcast rights holder for the Tour de France, has announced that cycling's biggest race will maintain its presence on free-to-air television in the country after signing a multi-year deal with 5.

The deal largely covers highlights packages, although the UK-based stages of the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ in the UK will be shown live on 5.

Free-to-air broadcasting of the Tour came to an end with last year's race after TNT Sports' parent company Warner Bros Discovery secured the exclusive rights to the race. ITV, the long-term free-to-air broadcaster, has now stepped away from cycling.

That meant that the Tour, along with much of the rest of the cycling calendar, would only be accessible to people paying a £30.99 per month subscription fee, up from the £6.99 price for GCN+ just two years ago.

On Wednesday, however, TNT Sports announced that some coverage would remain on free-to-air television between 2026 and 2028. Highlights of the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España will be broadcast on Channel 5 during that period, with highlights of the Giro d'Italia to follow from next year.

The deal will also include live coverage of the UK Grand Départs of both the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes in 2027.

"The Grand Tours are the most prestigious cycling events in the world, watched and adored by millions, and we are delighted that 5 will be their new free-to-air home in the UK," said the president of 5, Reemah Sakaan.

"Our daily highlights show for the Tour de France will be available to everyone at 7pm each evening this July and we'll also have daily highlights through both the Vuelta a Espana and the Giro d'Italia for the next three years, plus next year we'll have live coverage of the Tour de France's historic return to the UK.

"The Tour de France kicks off an incredible summer of sport on 5, adding to the rapidly expanding range of premium sport we have for people to watch, including the best of the action from the Commonwealth Games this summer.

"This new deal with TNT Sports reflects our long-term commitment to bringing brilliant coverage of the world's best sporting events to millions of viewers and providing access to premium audiences for advertisers."

'Expanding the reach of elite cycling across the UK'

In October 2024, TNT Sports signed a deal with Tour de France organisers ASO to become the exclusive broadcaster of the Tour de France until 2030. The broadcaster already held the air rights to the other Grand Tours as well as many other races throughout the season.

Now, for the next three years, at least a portion of the cycling calendar will remain accessible to fans around the country.

Ahead of this summer's Tour de France, many UK cycling fans were preparing for the prospect of no longer being able to follow the action on TV, after the demise of ITV’s free-to-air coverage last year.

The broadcaster decided not to renew their rights deal for the 2026 race and beyond, leaving Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), parent company of TNT Sports, as the exclusive UK rightsholder for cycling's premier three-week race.

However, for fans unwilling to part with their cash to watch the action, there may now be a glimmer of hope.

Speaking to a select group of media, including Cyclingnews, WBD's Executive Vice President of Production, Scott Young, all but confirmed that non-paying fans would be able to watch some of the action.

"I think you need to have a free-to-air product [for the Tour de France] and there will be a free-to-air product,” he explained.

"It could entail having a partner that will show parts of the Tour de France to a free audience, but we're just working through how much [of the race], what duration, frequency, we're working through all the elements of that," Young added when quizzed on what a free-to-air product could actually look like for viewers.

WBD already collaborates with free-to-air broadcasters for other major sporting events, such as the Olympics and FA Cup – English football’s main domestic knockout competition – with the BBC, and has held similar arrangements with ITV for rugby union and MotoGP. WBD also has Quest, a free-to-air TV channel within their portfolio that has previously aired cycling highlights.

However, Young would not commit to any further details on which broadcaster TNT Sports may end up teaming up with for the Tour, nor the specifics of any such arrangement, such as whether it would entail live coverage or just highlights packages.

The controversial price hike

ITV's departure from the UK cycling landscape in 2025 was marked as a major blow to the sport, with concerns raised about the impact a reduction in visibility could have on cycling's long-term health at all levels.

It coincided with the closure of Eurosport in the UK, and a subsequent rise in monthly subscription cost – from £6.99 to £30.99 a month, a 343% price hike – as cycling moved over to TNT Sports.

Addressing the criticism directed towards the UK’s now exclusive Tour de France broadcaster, Young said: “There’s lots of different ways to connect to an audience beyond the paywall. Companies like us and Sky invest in sport, and that's why sports like the Premier League have been going since day one behind a paywall. There’s clearly an audience in this market that accepts to pay for sport, and if you pay for your TV licence, you're effectively paying for sport.

“We need to have a relationship with free-to-air broadcasters to do exactly that, for us to continue to have the value coming in through the subscription so we can invest in sport and have a free-to-air partner so that a certain amount of that content is also accessible to people who choose not to subscribe,” he continued.

The broadcaster faced a second wave of criticism shortly after coverage moved to TNT Sports – and the resulting price hike – when its ad-free stream disappeared ahead of last summer’s Tour de France.

In response to this point of contention, Young was clear on WBD’s stance.

“I think as a commercial sports broadcaster, an ad-free product doesn't make a lot of sense.”

That being said, Cyclingnews understands that WBD is working towards a new solution for advertisement breaks during its cycling coverage, and is hopeful of restoring some form of flag-to-finish coverage option for major races in the near future.

A noticeable change will be the removal of the Valkenberg and the addition of two ascents of the Eikenberg, while the final one-two punch of the Muur van Geraardsbergen and Bosberg remain.

The women have the same start and finish, but will ride 137.6km across the cobbles and bergs of Flanders, facing Geraardsbergen and the decisive ascents of the Muur and Bosberg before flat finish of 11.8km into Ninove.

Cycling streaming will move to yet another home in the UK and Ireland, as TNT Sports is set be absorbed into the new HBO Max service from March 26.

Any cycling fans hoping for a price drop will be disappointed, however, as the HBO Max with TNT Sports plan remains at £30.99 per month. Entertainment plans, without sport, range from £4.99 per month to £14.99 per month.

The move to HBO Max comes in the first year that the Tour de France is no longer free to air in the UK, and though Warner Bros. have had the rights to the race for several years – variously via Eurosport, GCN+ and TNT Sports – they had previously shared the rights with ITV, but the British broadcaster did not renew their deal after 2025.

There is some good news, though, as it seems the move will be fairly seamless for existing Discovery+ subscribers.

According to an email sent to subscribers on Monday, you will simply need to log in to HBO Max using your discovery+ details from March 26, with billing plans and cycles not affected in the changeover and no need to create a new account.

As well as TNT's sport portfolio, the new HBO Max service will feature HBO shows, including the long-awaited The Pitt, which hasn't previously been available in the UK and Ireland, as well as Warner Bros. films and television and "select Discovery+ favourites".

Though TNT currently own the rights to a vast array of sports, including comprehensive Olympics coverage, select Premier League football, snooker, tennis and motorsports, their offering is set to take a hit as they will lose UEFA Champions League rights to Paramount in 2027.

Many had hoped that the loss of this important football asset would force a price decrease, but that isn't currently on the cards with the move to HBO.

How long this new streaming set-up lasts, however, is not certain, as Warner Bros. Discovery is currently involved in a bidding war between two other streaming giants. In December 2025, Netflix announced that it was set to buy the 'Streaming & Studios' part of Warner Bros, but only a few days later, Paramount mounted an attempt at a hostile takeover to acquire the entirety of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Warner Bros. told its shareholders to reject the bid from Paramount and move forward with Netflix, but as of February, the future ownership of the company is still not entirely clear, nor is it clear what a Netflix buyout would mean for cycling streaming.

HBO Max operates in North America with various cycling rights for each country, and streaming is not set to change in the US and Canada under the new UK programming plans. North American viewers will also continue to have options for cycling broadcasts on FloBikes and Peacock.

The bulk of high-profile events across cyclo-cross, road, mountain bike and track disciplines take place in Europe, and it continues to be an evolving landscape for broadcast rights among networks and streaming platforms. Some of the premier gravel races around the globe now offer their own live streaming on YouTube or social media channels, retaining rights and keeping the process open without subscriptions.

While streaming has brought convenience to individuals with handheld devices and smart TVs, it's a Rubik's cube for piecing together who covers what, even with three main players in the US market. And monthly or yearly subscription fees also change periodically.

In general, FloBikes has the rights to Flanders Classic races (Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race, UCI Cyclo-cross World Cups), Peacock is the exclusive US home for ASO races (Liège–Bastogne–Liège, Tour de France, Vuelta a España), and HBO Max offers RCS Sport races (Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo, Giro d'Italia).

In July, Peacock features the Tour de France, July 4-26, followed by the Tour de France Femmes in August.

HBO Max is the place to watch UCI Mountain Bike Cross-country and Downhill World Cup races in July.

FloSports offers UCI MTB BMX and Eliminator race coverage for US viewers in July, while Canadian subscribers will see the Tour de France on their specialty channel FloBikes.

FloBikes

FloBikes began live and on-demand coverage for professional cycling in 2017, a vertical streaming channel under the FloSports umbrella. In the US this past year, programming included UCI Cyclo-cross World Cups and World Championships and USA Cycling national championships events.

A bonus with FloBikes is that subscribers receive access to other FloSports programming, such as motor sports, college sports and other amateur and pro events, with access to more than 100,000 events. A single subscription offers access with multiple devices sharing the same network.

New in 2026, FloBikes has updated its calendar listings for programming based on the country, so it is now clear what races US subscribers can watch versus Canadian subscribers, which can be different.

While BMX and MTB Eliminator events feature in July, the August lineup will include road races such as Clásica de San Sebastián (men and women), Czechia Tour and Deutschland Tour, with UCI Mountain Bike World Championships beginning the end of that month.

There is just one type of plan, which can be paid for monthly or for one year. While FloBikes increased the monthly subscriber rate from $29.99 to $39.99, a special rate for an annual plan, $155.88, gives you eight months for free, for a 67% discount.

HBO Max

HBO Max integrated live sports from Discovery Channel and new TNT and TBS affiliations three years ago to create a broad array of programming including US pro leagues (MLB, NHL), NCAA basketball, US soccer national matches, NASCAR and other sports. They promoted an offering of 1,700 sports events in 2025.

Multiple disciplines on the cycling lineup include road, cyclo-cross, MTB, track and BMX, with UCI MTB World Cup races taking centre stage in July.

HBO Max offers two plans with live sports. The Standard plan at $18.49 per month or $184.99 for one year, which includes streaming on two devices and 30 downloads to watch on the go. The Premium plan is $22.99 per month or $229.99 for one year, with 100 downloads allowed but still just streaming on two devices for sports.

Peacock

NBC Sports and NBCUniversal's streaming platform Peacock launched a six-year extension with Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) in 2024 to remain the exclusive US media rights holders for the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes. Peacock offers live start-to-finish coverage for every stage through 2029.

This network remains the home for the Tour de France in July, with Peacock also the home for Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in early August.

Play-by-play for all 21 stages of the Tour will be called by announcing legend Phil Liggett, with analysis by Bob Roll and reporters Steve Porino and Christian Vande Velde. All stages will be broadcast live, on-demand recordings provided on Peacock within 30 minutes to an hour after the live presentation concludes.

NBC will air encore presentations on three days, which do not require a separate subscription unless not part of a viewer's regular cable, satellite or streaming service - stage 14 (Saturday, July 18) at 3 p.m. EDT, stage 15 (Sunday, July 19) at 2 p.m. EDT, and the final stage 21 (Sunday, July 26) at 2 p.m. EDT.

There will be daily pre-race studio shows before each stage of the Tour on Peacock and NBCSN. Paul Burmeister will host daily pre-race and post-race studio coverage alongside analysts Brent Bookwalter and Tejay van Garderen.

The Select plan is just $7.99 each month and $79.99 for one year, but excludes most sports coverage. The Peacock Premium plan is $10.99 per month or $109.99 for one year. And features live sports with ads. The Premium Plus plan is $16.99 per month or $169.99 for one year, and differs by offering no ads (with limited exclusions for sports, events and other programs).

Going with Premium also provides download capabilities for mobile devices. For either plan, when you subscribe for a full year the savings gives you 12 months for the price of 10.

This weekend's Cyclocross World Cup round at Antwerp will see Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel face off against each other for the first time in this cyclocross season's competition.

'More robust' was how Levi Leipheimer, a former WorldTour rider and co-founder of Levi’s GranFondo, described to Cyclingnews what next year's third edition of The Growler would look like.

The 137-mile one-day race held in Sonoma County, California, returns on Saturday, April 25, one week later than last year, with two eye-catching essentials for racers and spectators - a live stream and a $156,000 pro prize purse.

Last year, Keegan Swenson (Santa Cruz htSQD) held on to the elite men's title for a second year in a row, this time from a four-rider sprint, while Lauren Stephens (Aegis Cycling Foundation-Ventum) soloed to the elite women's victory. Their moves and all the race action was shown live for the first time with a three-hour global broadcast, which Leipheimer said would expand for 2026.

The application process for elite riders, as well as junior competitors on two shorter routes, opened this week.

"There's been a strong response, especially after last year with the live stream," Leipheimer told Cyclingnews. "We're going to have a minimum of the same amount of prize money, maybe it'll even increase a little, and we can invest more in the live stream."

Multiple cameras were used to follow lead riders in the elite men's and elite women's races, which had separate starts for the same course. Leipheimer said they would upgrade resources to follow both races through the remote sections of the course this time.

"We're trying to have a minimum of 180 riders in each of the men's and women's pro fields. That would be the goal. And the juniors, there were a lot more that turned out than I had imagined. They all race for free, it's probably the most notable thing about our race," he added.

Compared to last year, the new goals would see the elite women's field triple in size, while the elite men's field could expand another 60%. Next year, all riders in the pro field will be asked to commit 2% of their prize money as donations for the event's charity, the King Ridge Foundation.

While stage races seem to struggle in the US, the one-day races are on a resurgence, with collections of criterium races going full force - USA CRITS, American Criterium Cup, Chicago Grit, Tour of America's Dairyland - as well as Maryland Cycling Classic offering races for men and women and the Philadelphia Cycling Classic scheduled to make a comeback.

Add to that list in 2026 Boulder Roubaix, a biannual Classics-style one-day race that started in 1992 to pay tribute to Paris-Roubaix, both offering unpredictable weather conditions that make the off-road sections treacherous.

Colorado's Boulder Roubaix moves away from the same weekend date as the European Monument for the first time, now the day after The Growler, and will extend the length of the route.

The 18.7-mile (30km) circuit will be changed to a 30-mile (48.3km) course, incorporating new sections over the dams at the Boulder Reservoir, 'the Rez', with a familiar mix of gravel roads and pavement in north Boulder County. The pro men will complete three laps of almost 90 miles, and the pro women two laps of about 60 miles, with all start/finish lines at the Rez.

"Up-and-coming racers know that a victory here can get them noticed by pro teams. And with the crazy interest in gravel racing in the USA, I’m hearing from many top-level gravel pros who plan to use Boulder Roubaix as a tune-up for their season," said Chris Grealish, race founder and director, in a press release.

Among the road-turned-gravel racers with success at the Boulder race is Torbjørn Andre Røed (Trek Driftless), who won the event in 2022.

"Boulder Roubaix is a sweet race. This is probably my favorite road race I have done in Colorado and it was a great vibe around the start/finish area as well," the 2022 pro men's winner Torbjørn Røed told Cyclingnews.

"I remember the course helping to make the race active and explosive. Good mix of gravel and pavement, where the gravel was 'chunky' enough to make a difference, but still very good on road bikes."

The last edition of Boulder Roubaix in 2024 began with the pro men scheduled to make five laps of the shorter circuit and the pro women three laps. However, wind gusts of up to 35 mph shortened the race to just two laps for both fields, Finn Gullickson winning for pro men and Anna Dorovskikh winning the pro women's category.

Like Levi's GrandFondo, Boulder Roubaix also has a range of race categories for juniors, with registration opening January 2, 2026.

The sport's governing body, the UCI hosts free streams for the UCI World Cup series and UCI World Championships on its own UCI YouTube channel. Coverage is, however, geo-restricted, and is only available in countries where a TV deal hasn't been struck with an external broadcaster.

Geo-restrictions vary by event, but fans in the UK and Ireland will always be blocked from the feed given Eurosport and Discovery+ show all World Cup and World Championship races. The feed is, however, sometimes freely available in the US, Canada, and Australia.

Given cyclocross' strong roots in Belgium, races from all the series are regularly shown by the free-to-air public broadcasters – VRT / Sporza in the Flemish-speaking north and RTBF in the French-speaking south. The Superprestige, X2O Trofee, and Exact Cross series are all covered. Likewise, over the border the Dutch public broadcaster NOS often has free live streams on its platform, NPO Start.

TNT Sports and Discovery+ bill themselves as the 'home of cycling' in the UK and they once again have a packed programme for the 2025-2026 cyclocross season. You can watch all the UCI World Cup rounds, the UCI World Championships, and action from the Superprestige, X2O Trofee, and Exact Cross series, as well.

Not all the action will make it to TNT Sports' TV channels for linear viewers, but Discovery+ is the online streaming platform, where you'll find all the cyclocross racing more consistently available. Since last spring, a subscription to Discovery+ that includes cycling costs £30.99 per month.

Fans in the UK will find themselves locked out of the UCI's free streams, as outlined above. If you're a Discovery+ subscriber wanting to get your coverage outside the UK, or you're visiting the UK and want your usual UCI YouTube feed, in both cases you'd need a VPN, such as NordVPN.

Watch cyclocross around the world

For Belgian commentary and coverage of all of the top cyclocross series from the country that knows cyclocross best, head to Sporza or RTBF – for free. Just over in the Netherlands, it's on NOS.

Eurosport doesn't exist in the UK anymore but it does in most of Europe. Somewhat confusingly, you get this in two different places depending on where you are, so for some countries it's Discovery+ and in others it's Max.

It's the World Cup that attracts the biggest range of international broadcasters, and you'll find most races on RAI in Italy, TV2 in Denmark, J Sports in Japan, Astro in Malaysia, STVR in Slovakia, and CT Sport in the Czech Republic.
