The Apple AirPods Pro 3 see a big jump forward over their predecessors, for cyclists the built-in heart rate sensing lets you track your heart rate and calories burned with up to 50 different workout types.

The soaring temperatures sweeping the UK may mean it's too hot to work up a sweat out on a ride; however, it's a great time to give your bike a deep clean. Water dries off rapidly in these conditions, so it's far less likely to hang around and corrode any componentry. I've been washing my bikes during the evening and may have liberally chucked the water around to keep myself cool during the process, too.

We're currently in the throes of a four-day Amazon Prime Day deal event, and this year, the behemoth retailer appears to have it in for bike computers.

The price war

If there's any good thing to come from the sheer size that Amazon has grown to, it's that when it runs a sale event like Prime Day, other retailers take notice and, as has happened here, they price match.

As you'll see in the prices listed above, many of the US retailers such as Jenson, Competitive Cyclist and REI have matched the Amazon price down to the cent. If you'd prefer to shop at any of the more cycling-specific retailers, you can do so without being forced to pay more.

In the UK, Balfe's Bikes has actually gone one step further and undercut the giant on a couple of the models.

If you're in the UK, have spoken to anyone in the UK, or watched any news pertaining to the UK this week, you'll be well aware that we're all hiding indoors away from the heat.

That giant fiery ball in the sky that we so long for throughout the other 11 months of the year has finally shown its face, and now we don't know how to cope. But naturally, like true Brits, we do what we can to muddle through.

Compared to the general population, there's a subsection of cyclists that, in my opinion, are pretty well equipped at staying cool when the mercury rises, and that's the indoor cycling crowd; Zwifters, TrainerRoaders, MyWhooshers, FulGazzers and the like. Our hobby literally entails finding ways to keep cool while we ride our bikes.

Over the years, I've had dozens of products, hacks and techniques pass across my desk to help in this aim. I've had various fans, core body temperature sensors, continuous misting devices, I've even had cycling kit with small pockets into which you can put ice packs. And I've learned techniques such as a wet towel draped around my neck and a damp cap on my head to help with evaporative cooling.

What is the Kickr Headwind?

To put it simply, the Kickr Headwind is a fan, but to leave it at that would be to sell it miles short.

More specifically, it's a smart fan specifically designed for indoor cycling.

In that context, it can be connected to your workout to automatically adjust the wind speed between four levels based on your riding speed (in a virtual world, of course), your heart rate, or your power output.

But it can also be controlled manually between four wind speeds via buttons on the front of the fan itself, or you can select the speed as a percentage of max (meaning 100 different options) via the Wahoo smartphone app.

And speaking of the max, it can send wind across your room at up to 30mph. That's four times faster than the £600 Dyson AM07.

It delivers air in a fairly narrow direction of travel as it's designed to maximise coverage over the shape of a cyclist. But this means it's really good at moving air across a room from a distance, or in my current case, down my hallway and into my office.

Does it have any downsides?

It's worth noting that the Kickr Headwind isn't a silent fan by any means. It's quieter than the floor-standing industrial fan I also have at home, but louder than the higher-end Shark or Dyson fans.

It also won't oscillate like many of the aforementioned brands' models or those intended for generic at-home use.

Its fold-out rear feet let you adjust the angle, but only from a simple low- to high- angle. There's no finite angle adjustment, and I often find myself reaching for a few books to prop up the front or back legs to adjust the angle when I want to direct the airflow to a specific height.

Wahoo Kickr Headwind vs Elite Aria

I also have the Elite Aria indoor cycling fan at home, and on comparing the two against each other in today's conditions, it's clear which is the better unit.

The Aria does a similar job of cooling you in close quarters when riding a bike. And it's got a smaller footprint, so when cycling, I can actually put it on the desk next to my laptop, meaning it's usually less than three feet away from my face.

But it doesn't have the same total power or narrow field of airflow as the Kickr Headwind. This might seem like a good thing for moving air around the house more broadly in a heatwave, but I've found it simply means it moves less air in total, and circulates air around a smaller area when used in an open-plan space.

Whilst doing some snooping among the sales for our Prime Day cycling deals hub, I came across a bike computer on sale that I have been testing recently, and it might just be a bit of a game-changer thanks to its very competitive price and solid performance.

iGPSPORT is a Chinese brand whose profile gained traction this year when it began sponsoring WorldTour team Groupama-FDJ United.

I've been testing the brand's BiNavi model, which is one of its navigation-focused models, though I'd just call it an all-rounder with a lot of the same specs as the best bike computers that I am pitting it against.

Setup was easy, and so was the accompanying app. I also had no issue pairing my sensors, etc.

The BiNavi, specifically the 3.5" size screen version, is on sale in the UK and US, and what may draw your attention is its very competitive price point. Under £170 in the UK and just over $200 in the US.

Specs-wise, the unit weighs just over 100 grams, has a 3.5" colour touch screen, accompanying app, Strava, Komoot and TrainingPeaks integration, smartphone music control, Core sensor and smart light compatibility, IPX7 waterproof rating, the list goes on, but the point is it stands up against more expensive, better-known competition.

I've been surprised and impressed in testing. The BiNavi is performing strongly so far for the money, and could be a serious rival to more established brands.

The only negative so far for me is that the screen isn't quite as bright or vivid as something like Garmin Edge 550 or Hammerhead Karoo.

If you're considering a new computer and don't want to spend a premium, in my opinion, it's at least worth investigating. When was the last time you saw a unit like this at this price? Head below to see some images of my own test unit.

The rise of mini electric pumps means it could well be game over for the dear old conventional mini pump. These tiny, portable devices are easier to carry while you ride and do away with having to pump like a maniac to reach your desired tyre pressure when you get a flat.

I started using the Cycplus AS2 mini electric pump last year, and since then, my selection of standard mini pumps have been gathering dust in my garage.

There are a number of mini electric pumps on the market these days. While some are cheaper than the AS2, it's a model that's never let me down and has saved many rides from deflating disasters. Now you can pick one up for less than $50 or £50.

Measuring just 4.6 x 2.8 x 6.4cm (1.8 x 1.1 x 2.5in), the AS2 easily fits in the palm of your hand. At just 97g (3.4oz), it won't weigh down your jersey pocket or riding pack, and I've even stuck mine in a trouser pocket on casual rides and commutes.

To use the AS2, I usually connect the unit directly to a valve stem. It does come with an inflation hose though, which comes in handy if the space between your wheel spokes is on the tight side.

The maximum pressure the AS2 can provide is 100psi, which is impressive for a tiny unit. In my testing, it took the AS2 just 60 seconds to inflate a 700c tyre to 50psi. It also has far less vibration than some of its competitors, so it's easier to hold in place while you inflate. It's not overly loud while it operates either.

Recharging the pump's internal battery takes around 20 minutes. A full charge should be enough for two 700x25c inflations, but I'd recommend recharging the AS2 after every use. The pump comes with a silicone sleeve, a splash-proof pouch, and a USB-C charging cable.

It'll be news to nobody here in the UK that the sun has currently got his hat on.

It's currently 31° Celsius at Cyclingnews HQ in Bath, and temperatures are predicted to soar to the high-30s (around 100° F) for most of England in the coming days, likely hitting all-time highs since records began.

With a Red Weather Warning for 'Extreme Heat' in effect across the country, it's imperative to stay safe when going about your day-to-day business, and that might counterintuitively mean staying indoors.

Aside from a dunk in the sea – I wish I had taken up surfing as a kid – there are worse sports you can do in conditions like these. However, it's important to remain vigilant if you do choose to venture out.

As a cyclist, you're often in direct sunlight for multiple hours at a time, working hard. You might not feel as though you're sweating as much as when you go for a run or work out in the gym, but that's probably because the sweat is doing its job of cooling you down by evaporating, and thus you must remember to replace the fluids and electrolytes you're losing.

There are plenty of other things you should be doing to keep yourself safe, too. Here are nine things to think about.

Sun cream

The first line of defence against the sun's harmful rays is a good quality sunscreen with high SPF rating. The higher SPF the better, along with a liberal approach to application. Our advice is to get a sport-specific sunscreen, or at least something that's sweatproof, but don't forget to reapply every couple of hours.

Start - and stay - hydrated

You wouldn't start a long car journey with an empty fuel tank, and the same should apply to your hydration and fuel when cycling in hot weather. By drinking plenty of fluids in the 24 hours leading up to your ride, you have more fluid to help you sweat, and a bigger buffer before the wheels start falling off.

But this needs to be approached sensibly. Too much water without also eating real foods or at least supplementing electrolytes can lead to hyponatraemia, which is when the body's balance between water and sodium is disrupted and becomes overly diluted.

Alternate water and electrolytes

Connected to the above, it's important to add electrolytes to at least one of your bottles, but it can also be beneficial carrying a bottle of plain water.

Your body's natural cooling mechanism is to sweat, which takes heat away from the body as that sweat evaporates. If you feel the heat rise a little too far, pouring some of that water over your neck, back, arms or legs can help accelerate this evaporative cooling effect.

Avoid cotton, wear white

Compared to modern polyester apparel, cotton t-shirts and older cycling jerseys are pretty poor at aiding breathability and providing the sweat-wicking properties that help with your body's natural evaporative cooling techniques.

Also, on days where the sun is beating strongly, avoid black or dark clothing that absorbs the sun's radiation, and instead opt for light colours or white that can reflect the sun's rays.

Time your ride, plan your route, and avoid the hottest part of the day

This is a two-in-one tip, and it falls squarely under 'avoid the heat at all costs'. In short, if you can avoid riding during the hottest part of the day, you should.

But even if getting out at 6 AM isn't feasible, you can adapt your route to ride roads that are likely to be shaded by tree cover or tall buildings, rather than heading out onto your nearest moor where roads are exposed and primed for baking in the afternoon sun.

Plan your stops

Connected to the above, consider whether your ride needs a stopping place, either at the roadside in the shade to reapply your suncream, at a petrol station for a top-up of water, or at a cafe with air conditioning to give you a chance to cool down.

Do a bit of research on places to stop, shops that'll be open, cafes that will let you lock your bike up, or ice cream vans that'll serve you up a Solero.

Take a leaf out of the pro peloton's book

Before hot race days, most pro cyclists will cut the leg off a pair of stockings, stuff it with ice cubes, tie a knot in the top and pop it inside their jersey against between their shoulder blades. This not only acts as local cooling for an area that sits in direct sunlight, but as the ice melts, the water covers the torso and evaporates, helping to keep the core temperature down.

Ice drinks

We've all heard of putting our bottles in the fridge the night before we head out, but a pro tech tip that takes this one step further is replacing that drink with an ice slushy, which does an excellent job of cooling your core temperature from the inside.

And since we don't care much for average speed on our training rides, you could even swap out your plastic bottles for stainless steel insulated bottles and keep those slushies cold for your entire ride.

Pre cooling

Pre-cooling, such as drinking an ice drink before you depart, or wearing an ice vest like the pros, can help delay the effects of the heat, simply because starting cooler means it takes your body longer to reach the sorts of temperatures that can cause issues.

This may help on shorter efforts, but it won't make much of a dent on longer rides.

Adapt to the heat in advance

It's obviously too late for anyone facing the heat this week, but as a learning ahead of next time, if you want to be able to ride well in hot weather, you'll need to adapt.

Examples of ways to do this include frequent low-level exposure to heat, such as saunas and hot baths, but also include riding indoors with the fan turned off. Of course, this should all be approached with extreme caution, because done incorrectly, it can carry the risk of hyperthermia.

As a blisteringly quick, surefooted and smooth tyre with impressive durability, the Continental GP5000 S TR's credentials usually mean it has a hefty and rarely discounted price tag.

However, with Amazon Prime Day officially here, I've found big discounts on GP5000 tyres, which see them hit the lowest price since Black Friday last year, with a nice $35 off a pair at Amazon US.

Good morning deal hunters.

Josh here, gearing up for a spicy hot day here in the UK, where temperatures are set to climb to the mid-30s (mid-90s for our US readers).

Given most of our American friends will still be snoozing, I'll kick the day off with some deals for our UK readers.

This obviously isn't much of a bike tech deal, but I genuinely can't get over how good it is, and I have a good reason for including it.

If you own a bike, you'll have undoubtedly worried about it being stolen at some point, and the Blink camera system is a good way to arm your home against thieves. It's no substitute for an alarm system, of course, but it's a good way to add low-cost surveillance to the mix.

I've used the Blink cameras for years to do things like keep an eye on the dogs while I'm out. I bought the doorbell last year and haven't had a single issue with them. I won't buy this one, since I don't need another doorbell, but I'll definitely be adding some of the outdoor cameras now they're at this price.

Next up, something that treads the line between sport and lifestyle... the Apple Watch.

A couple of years ago, Apple added bike functionlity to its app, meaning the optical heart rate sensors and GPS can now be used to track your rides, and you can pair your power meter to it to capture your watts too. It won't match the functionality of the best bike computers for serious cyclists, but as I often find when wearing mine, it's really useful for tracking short rides into the office or on days where I realise I forgot to charge my computer.

There are three on offer here. The Series 11, the SE3, and the Ultra 3.

We have been impressed with this unit ourselves; without a pressure gauge, it's more of a get-out-of-jail tool, but it sure packs a punch!

As the earth's rotation continues and the sun rises in the eastern states of the USA, I'm going to spend a bit of time on the .com version of Amazon and see what deals have sprung up on that side of the pond.

A few deals that are guaranteed to be popular include the Garmin Edge range, of which many are discounted, the best of which I'll roundup below.

To keep us on tech for a moment, I've already covered the UK deals for Apple's AirPods, but there are discounts for our American readers too.

It's been a spicy-hot day here at CN headquarters, and although the live ticker's update cadence has slowed as the day has rolled on, that doesn't mean we've not been hard at work.

Instead, we've been compiling a roundup of hot-weather cycling tips for our UK readers who are on the first day of a week-long heat wave.

Good morning folks and welcome back to the Amazon Prime Day cycling deals live report, where our tech team are busy ferreting through the sales to find the best discounts for cyclists.

Today is day two of the four-day sale, and if you're wondering whether better deals will appear today, the answer is... it's complicated.

Multi-day deal events like Black Friday or Prime Day tend to follow a usual pattern.

Day one: The biggest headline deals launch immediately, and most of these stick around until the end of the sale.

Day two: Amazon introduces a handful of new deals and a new cohort of Lightning Deals (which tend to last 6, 12 or 24 hours), and products that are discounted but maybe aren't selling in as big a quantity as needed will be cut to an even cheaper price.

Day three: More of the same from day two, but the best deals tend to start selling out at this point.

Day four: Even more deals are often added to the mix as brands - and Amazon itself - tries to finish on a high.

So if you're wondering whether to hold off your purchase or buy to avoid missing out, our advice is:

If you're browsing, comparing options, or hoping for additional categories to go on sale, but aren't completely sure about which product you want to buy within the category you're shopping (or the price you're seeing), hold off to see if more products appear on day four.

If you'd be disappointed to miss out on a deal you're seeing today if it sold out tomorrow, you should buy it today.

Wahoo Elemnt Roam 2

I'll kick us off with a deal that is new to me this morning, and that's the Wahoo Elemnt Roam 2.

It's now superseded by the Roam 3, which is a big step up in functionality if you can afford the price jump (it has touchscreen, bigger screen, bigger battery, and faster processing).

But if not, the Roam 2 is still decent on all fronts, with a clear map and an easy-to-use operating system.

With that last deal said, it'd be remiss of me not to also include the Wahoo Elemnt Roam 3, which as mentioned, is a big step up in performance.

And to keep us in the Wahoo ecosystem for a minute, if you don't need the bigger screen of the Roam units, then the new Bolt offers the best of both worlds.

Electric Pumps galore for UK shoppers

A tech innovation that has really boomed in popularity in recent years in cycling is the electric pump.

It's not something I - Josh - have really followed. If I'm out riding, I'm more than happy with my Silca mini pump, not least because it offered an infinite number of tyre inflations (perhaps capped by my own energy reserves).

If I'm racing, I don't want to carry an electric pump, and will instead have a Co2 inflator.

And if I'm home, I'll use a track pump (I don't yet have a workshop compressor, though that would be preferred).

But despite my luddite approach to this new tech, I may be in the minority, and I can appreciate that simply pressing a button to inflate your tyres is much easier than pumping by hand.

That is all to say, they're popular, and this Prime Day there are loads of them on offer.

Having consulted my colleagues for their opinions, here's a roundup of recommendations for you to sink your teeth into:

Here at Cyclingnews we have dozens of bike pumps pass through the office each year, and one we always revert back to using is the JoeBlow from Topeak. It just works consistently well, grips nicely on all valves, and the pressure gauge is generally nice and accurate. It's conveniently good at propping open the door to our store room too.

On the subject of pumps we use, the Silca Tattico has been my personal go-to for around four years and it's still as good as the day I bought it.

Amazon Prime Day is officially upon us, and the four-day shopping extravaganza is with us until Friday.

The best cycling tech is a mainstay for all Prime Day sales, and one early deal we've spotted is on one of the best bike computers – the Hammerhead Karoo.

Amazon dropped the price to a best-of-the-year £303.49 earlier this week, and has now gone a small amount cheaper at £301.49!

This is a rare reduction on a top-rated cycling device that our testers have rated across all the iterations of the SRAM-owned Karoo cycling computer, and makes this deal well worth snapping up.

Like all the best cycling deals, this Hammerhead discount is only available while stocks last.

In our Hammerhead Karoo review, we rated it with an almost-perfect 4.5-star rating, and Cyclingnews' tester Tom Wieckowski reckoned at the time of testing that it was a worthy contender for the throne as the best cycling computer.

Tom highlighted that the Karoo "brought an awful lot to the table" and built on the class-leading touchscreen and resolution that the previous model was well-known for. The Karoo might not match up to our best overall choice, the Garmin Edge 1050, but it's not far behind. Especially when you consider the Garmin device will cost you at full price £680. Although the Edge 1050 is discounted on Amazon by 7% to £633.32.

The Karoo can hold its own easily against the market-leading Garmin, and has and Tom highlighted the smartphone-like user experience of the Karoo, and its touchscreen at the time of review was the best in a cycling computer. It's fair to say that Garmin and Wahoo offerings now have on-par touchscreen performance, but at this price, the Karoo is a very appealing purchase.

Size-wise, the Karoo screen is a high-definition 3.2-inches, the Edge 1050 measures 3.5-inches, and the resolution is the same at 480 x 800 pixels. However, with its liquid crystal display and 1,000 nits of peak brightness, the Garmin Edge 1050 just edges the comparison, but at a cost.

Battery life is claimed to be 15 hours on normal usage, and the Edge 1050 is 20 hours, again on normal usage.

This deal is Amazon UK only, and I've not found any significant discounts on the highlighted deal at Amazon US. Below, I have included our handy price checker, which will show the best prices on Karoo Hammerhead bike computers from other retailers, relevant to your location and territory.

Father's Day falls on Sunday, June 21 in the USA and the UK. If you're shopping for a cycling-themed present for the most important man in your life, then some of the best cycling tech is a sure-fire winner.

Garmin is the leading brand when it comes to the best cycling watches, and its flagship GPS smartwatch, the Garmin Fenix 8, is currently discounted by $250 to just $849.99, from the usual $1,099.99.

This is the lowest price we've ever seen on the Fenix 8, with the previous best Garmin Fenix 8 price, being $999.99 during the Amazon Prime Day sales this time last year.

Amazon Prime Day is also just around the corner, running from 23-26 June; however, the Fenix 8 is unlikely to drop any lower even then. So if you're feeling particularly generous this Father's Day or even contemplating an upgrade to your own cycling tech, this Garmin smartwatch deal is worth grabbing while you can.

This Garmin Fenix 8 deal is across the range of options and sizes (43, 47 and 51mm), all with that best-ever $250 off.

It includes the battery-extending solar-powered model, which for bikepacking adventures will provide up to 48 days of battery life with the Power Sapphire solar charging lens. The standard Fenix 8 battery is still impressive with a claimed up to 28 days of power.

Elsewhere, the list of features on the Fenix 8 include an internal speaker and microphone for voice control and messaging, which is a particularly appealing addition for cycling. The bright Amoled display is also a cycling box ticker, and ensures all your on-the-go cycling stats are easy to read, along with that extensive battery life and multi-band GNSS technology for highly accurate navigation.

Garmin is renowned for producing groundbreaking cycling tech, and the Garmin cycling range holds top spots in our best cycling tech buying advice, including the best GPS bike computers, plus the best power meters, smart lights with rearview radar, and of course, smartwatches.

The Father's Day Garmin Sale also has a few other reductions across Garmin cycling watches, including the Enduro 3, which has $150 off, down to $749.99. If you're looking for another tech option, then the Garmin Edge Explore 2 has a massive 40% off at Amazon, taking this highly rated cycling computer to a bargain price of $179.91.

These Garmin deals are US-based, but below our handy price checker will give you the best up-to-date pricing across its smartwatch range in your territory.

Amazon Prime Day is just around the corner, running from June 23 to June 26. As always, there will be plenty of cycling deals landing for all your essentials like chain lube, the best road bike tyres, and of course cycling tech.

However, one Prime Day deal that has dropped early is on the Garmin Edge Explore 2, discounted by an incredible 40% to just $179.91. That's the lowest ever price we've ever seen and a $120 saving on the Amazon price.

We already rate Garmin devices as some of the best bike computers on the market, and its flagship Edge 1050 device holds the top spot in our buying guide; as you'd expect, it comes with a flagship price tag. The Explore 2 has many similar features to its sibling, and even at full price, it takes our title as the best budget cycling computer.

It makes this deal well worth snapping up, and like all the best cycling deals, this Garmin discount is only available while stocks last. I also think, seeing that it's also its lowest-ever price, it's unlikely to go any cheaper come the actual Amazon Prime Day sales.

In our Garmin Edge Explore 2 review, we rated it with an almost-perfect 4.5-star rating, and Cyclingnews' tester Andy Turner reckoned it was a brilliant exploration bike computer, with its impressive navigation features being many of the review highlights.

The mapping system also shows road names, and hazard warnings such as busy roads or tight bends, which are highlighted on route mode or just when riding without a preloaded route. This extends to even highlighting potholes, which for the urban commuter makes the device very appealing.

The Explore 2 is a fairly large device measuring 3 inches (76 mm), just slightly smaller than the Edge 1050. Battery life therefore is important and is a claimed 16 hours on normal usage, and 24 with battery saver mode, and on par with the majority of non-solar powered devices.

Other features include bike alarm, incident detection, easy auto setup with your phone and Garmin Connect, and some Garmin-specific social features. It has all the usual connection capacities with ANT+, Bluetooth, and Wifi connection, and will connect with smartphones for notifications, and has 16GB of storage which can easily store maps and workout data.

This deal is Amazon US only, and I've not found any significant discounts on the highlighted deal at Amazon UK, with only a smallish 11% off. Below I have included our handy price checker, and that will show the best prices on the Edge Explore 2 from other retailers, relevant to your location and territory.

Garmin is the dominant brand when it comes to the best bike computers. Garmin holds an impressive four out of seven spots in Cyclingnews' cycling computer buying advice, impressing our expert testers with performance and features which make them hard to beat.

The Garmin Edge 1050 is our best overall choice, and it scored a 4.5 out of 5-star rating in our review. Its price tag was the main sticking point, which meant it fell just short of that flawless score.

However, right now on Amazon the Garmin Edge 1050 has a massive $100 off, taking it down to just $599.99, down from its usual $699.99. This is the lowest the Edge 1050 has been this year, matching the lowest it's ever been since launching back in 2024.

The Amazon Prime Day Summer Sale takes place in early June, so just around the corner, but we reckon the Edge 1050 won't drop any lower, so if you're after an upgrade on your current cycling computer to what is the best of the best, then now may well be the time to pull the trigger.

The Garmin Edge 1050's key feature, which sets it apart from rivals, is its vivid colour touchscreen display. It delivers rich details never seen before in a GPS device, so you can see maps and the plethora of stats on offer with a high resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.

The screen itself measures 3.5 inches (88.9 mm) diagonally and makes it one of the largest screens on the market. Our tester highlighted that for some, it may actually be overkill size-wise, if you're racing and have aero concerns or a bikepacker and need a long-lasting battery.

Battery life is claimed to be up to 20 hours in demanding use cases and up to 60 hours in battery saver mode. There's no solar charging either on the 1050, so if you're looking for maximum battery life, then the Garmin 1040 Solar extends that unit's capacity to a claimed 45 hours, and up to 100 hours in battery-saver mode. The Garmin Edge 1040 Solar is currently priced at $682 on Amazon.

Another nice addition is that now, like the majority of the best cycling watches, the 1050 features Garmin Pay, giving another option to pay for a coffee or avoid an emergency if you find yourself without another method of payment. Finally, there is a new digital bell function which seems like a gimmick on paper, but in testing we found it very useful for alerting walkers and other cyclists.

I won't lie, I'm a massive Garmin fanboy. I've used many of the cycling tech giants' products over the years, including the Garmin Edge 840 Solar, one of the best bike computers ever made, and one of my all-time favorite pieces of cycling tech, the Garmin Varia RCT715 rear radar light, which is simply outstanding.

There's no doubt Garmin make many of the best smartwatches for cycling too, and until recently I used the Garmin Fenix 7 watch for all my cycling tracking – that's also pretty much perfect.

I've never seen the Ultra 2 cheaper, and suggest if you've had the Ultra 2 in mind, you pull the trigger now, because this price won't last – and Prime Day ends at midnight on 8th October.

The Ultra 2 is at this price a seriously incredible piece of tech, and its titanium case gives it a rugged ready-for-adventure look. There is a never-ending list of excellent everyday functionality, and I won't list them all, because the joy of discovering what this watch does is all part of the fun of owning one.

For most people, the deal breaker when considering a purchase will be the infamous battery life. Previous Apple Watches have been poor, but the Ultra 2, for me and most people, it's no issue whatsoever. You have to charge essentially every other day, and that doesn't bother me.

I love listening to music while cycling, and the Ultra syncs perfectly to my AirPods with a satisfying chime to let you know, and automatically shows all your Spotify playlists and podcasts, which you can control from the watch screen with its touchscreen.

I worked as a bike mechanic for years; hell, I even took an exam in it. Although it's not my daily job anymore, I'm still working on bikes all the time, and maintain my interest in tools and the maintenance-related world of bikes.

I like to try and scout out a few solid deals for tools and useful accessories for working on your bike when the Amazon Prime sales roll around, and have found a handful of solid buys again this time.

I've owned and have used every tool in this roundup, and can vouch for them all. This might come at a good time if you're about to drag your winter bike out from the depths of the garage or are giving your bike an end-of-season service.

Generally, buying good-quality tools will only pay off in the long term; they should last longer, be nicer to use, and in some cases help produce a better standard of work.

During last year's Amazon Prime Day, we saw Apple's AirPods Pro 2 headphones discounted to their best price ever. The deal was so good I couldn't resist treating myself to a set. I knew they would be good, but I honestly don't think I could live without them now.

The UK and US deals are a little different. In the UK, Amazon has dropped the RRP to £199, so despite the Amazon deal only showing as having a discount of 10%, the Airpods Pro 2 is now back down to its lowest ever price of £179. In the US, they currently have a very tempting 33% off, bringing the price down to $179. It's a great price, although it doesn't quite match their all-time best price from earlier in the year.

I have used my AirPods Pro 2 every day since I got them. I use them while I work, when I travel, around the house and I have even used them for a motivational music boost mid bikepacking race.

They have endured a hard life bouncing around in my pockets with keys, carelessly tossed in bags and drenched in rain, yet they still work faultlessly. If they did happen to break right now, I would instantly buy another pair without a second thought. I love them.

The sound quality is really impressive and the noise cancellation is staggering, silencing noisy environments so I can clearly hear my music whether I'm working in a busy coffee shop, travelling or turbo training with a fan on full blast. The only time I don't use the Airpods Pro 2 is when I'm out for a road ride, where I will opt for Shokz Open Run Pro 2 (which are also discounted) for better awareness of my surroundings. Even then, when the Airpods Pro 2 are in Transparency mode, I can still hear what's going on around me, or there is the Adaptive mode, which modulates the noise cancellation based on your environment.

If you use other Apple products, you will be able to take full advantage of all the AirPods features. At home, I particularly like the dual connection function, so I can easily connect and switch between my phone and laptop. The case also has Find My tech built in, which has already proved its worth, allowing me to track down the case when it fell out of my pocket at a coffee shop.

Both the case and the earbuds themselves charge super fast too, so if your a forgetful charger, or like me simply use them all the time you can quickly charge them back up. Just 5 minutes in the case gives you an hour of listening and the case will fully charge in less than two hours. Between earbuds and case, at full charge you will get up to 30 hours of listening time.

You have probably heard that Apple released the third generation of the AirPods Pro, and unsurprisingly, they are pitched as sounding better, feature-enhanced noise cancelling and a slightly improved fit. That said, the AirPods Pro 2 are still one of the best headphones for cycling, offering incredible sound quality, noise cancellation and advanced features, now at a discounted price. The only feature that really stands out is the built-in heart rate monitor, although I would rather choose one of the best heart rate monitors for training sessions.

Given that Specialized has just released a new Aethos, with more gentle geometry and more integration, it's no surprise to see discounts on the old, first-generation model. It's something we've been keeping an eye out for, in fact, but we didn't expect something this good so fast.

While on the hunt for Amazon Big Deal Days cycling deals, I strayed onto the Sigma Sports site and found a Gen 1 Aethos, complete with 12sp mechanical Shimano 105 and an extra set of Scope R5 wheels, all for under £2,800, representing 38% off.

In fact, there are plenty of other Aethos configurations similarly discounted.

There's a 105 Di2 model with Scope wheels at 37% off, through to the top-tier S-Works model with SRAM Red at 20% off.

Even the lowest tier, with 'just' mechanical 105 and alloy wheels, now comes in at under £2,300, which is prime for future upgrades.

If you must have the latest model, then that's fair enough, but there's something timeless about the first-generation model.

Personally, if I had the choice between the two, I'd probably still go for the old one; the geometry is more racy, and I like the fun of playing around with different bar and stem combos without having to remortgage the house for an integrated cockpit.

That and the cheapest Aethos 2 on Sigma Sports is £5,499, a difference of £3,200... You can get a LOT of extra upgrades for that money.

Amazon Prime Day, or 'Big Deal Days' as they're now known, are quite a soulless affair. All sorts of stuff gets discounted, and while we do our best to sift through the chaff to bring you the delicious wheat in our Prime Day Deals hubs and live blog, the pickings are naturally slimmer than over the Black Friday weekend, where all the other retailers pile in.

While you can pick up discounted AirPods competitors, highly-rated bike computers from Garmin, and other electronic items today, I'd like to suggest that you go for one of these books instead.

Some are beautiful photo books that will provide inspiration for your rides, some are route guides that will help you plan your next adventure, but none are part of the growing trend for AI-generated slop reads. In all cases, I'm certain that the contents of the pages will bring you more joy, especially over the long term, than whatever chargeable, wearable, beeping thing you're considering buying.

Further Adventures in Rough Stuff

This is the second greatest cycling photo book ever published (the first being the original volume, but that one isn't discounted). It's a collection of beautiful archive photos from the oldest off-road cycling club in the world and sits pride of place on my bookshelf, ready to be thumbed through when I'm lacking inspiration to get out and ride.

The photos are all from a time before gravel bikes existed... before mountain bikes too, for that matter. It's old steel tourers, canvas bags, and cooking up fish fingers on a rain-soaked hilltop after pushing the bike over a mountain pass.

The club's motto is "I never go for a walk without my bike", and it shows. I bought the pair of these for my parents for Christmas a couple of years ago, and if you want to go all-in then you can buy both volumes as a bundle (and you should).

JOBST BRANDT RIDE BIKE!

In a similar vein, from the same publishing house, JOBST BRANDT RIDE BIKE! (or just JOBST on the cover) chronicles the adventures of Jobst Brand (1935-2015), a Californian cyclist who spent nearly 50 summers in the Alps armed with a camera, documenting adventurous riding.

Like the Rough Stuff book it's bound to fill you with a newfound sense of I can definitely ride my bike over that.

Best Bike Rides Great Britain

Sometimes photo books are great inspiration, but route guidebooks are what you really need to get you out the door and riding your bike, which is what it's all about.

Katherine Moore, local bike journo and pal of mine, and several others put in an enormous amount of work to curate a list of beautiful day routes around the country in collaboration with Lonely Planet. Each one is tested, comes with downloadable maps, and all the info you need to actually get out and see the best the country has to offer.

If you're based in the southwest too, or are planning a visit, she's also written Gravel Rides South West England, which is also worth picking up now while it's on sale.

The Lost Lanes series

In much the same way as the route books above, the Lost Lanes books are a fantastic resource for finding new roads in your local area. They're split by region (so I have Lost Lanes West), and can personally attest to the routes being great; they're packed with history, places to eat, and pubs.

Like the Lonely Planet guides, the back of the book has all the routes in download form so you can simply plug them into your chosen bike computer and away you go for a lovely day out away from the screens.

Sadly, being based in the UK, I'm unable to take advantage of these deals, but if you're based in the Land Of The Free, let me explain why I think you should.

Winter is a serious test for any item of cycling kit, and although I prefer to hide away from the British winter in the relative comfort of my spare bedroom and while away the hours on Zwift, TrainerRoad, MyWhoosh (whatever other app I'm testing at the time), that doesn't mean my equipment is safe from accelerated wear and tear.

I'm not a particularly salty sweater, but even so, it's a recipe for corrosion to the point that I'll always drape a towel over the bars and wipe down the bike after each ride.

But there's one item I can't protect from sweat, and which is difficult to clean in the aftermath: the wireless in-ear headphones I use to listen to Sum 41 and Green Day to get me through the intervals, or episodes of Lost and Quarterback on Netflix to keep boredom at bay during the longer rides.

My 'best' pair of headphones is the AirPods Pro 2, but each time I use them for a sweaty session, I worry I'm quickening their demise. Not fun, given their high price.

For that reason, I tend to use a pair of JLab Go Air Pop instead. I bought these for just £15 in the Amazon Prime sales a year or so ago, and although they're pretty basic, the sound quality is good. More than anything, though, I won't be too upset when they eventually die.

However, they miss some features I find really useful, such as dual connection (with seamless switching between my phone and my laptop) and ANC to quieten the blast of the fan. The latter means I have to run them at full volume, which can't be good for the long-term health of my hearing.

The Amazon Echo Buds come with both of those features, along with connectivity to Alexa, Siri and Google. They also boast a claimed five-hour battery life, or 15 hours with the case, as well as a quick 15-minute charge time for two hours of playback.

What's more, I'd be tempted to add an Alexa-compatible 'smart' plug adaptor to my basket too. When racing on Zwift or doing certain interval sessions, it's often impossible to stop, climb off the bike, and turn the fan up to a higher setting. As a result, I find myself turning the fan up to full blast before I begin. It goes without saying, but a blast of cool air when I'm already cold is rarely fun.

With a pair of the Alexa-enabled headphones and an Alexa plug, I could crank the fan up to 100%, but leave it switched off at the plug. Then, when the going gets warm, I could quite literally ask it to switch on... all without lifting a finger.

Yes, I've put way too much thought into this, which is a little bit sad given I'm still not based in the USA and remain stuck with my £15 JLab Go Air Pops.

The Wahoo Kickr Core is one of the best smart trainers on the market, and for Amazon Big Deals Days, it has just hit its lowest price of the year, making it one of the best Prime Day cycling deals to have landed so far.

Amazon Big Deals Days run from October 7th to 8th, and right now, you can grab the Wahoo Kickr Core for just $427.49 in this Amazon Prime Day Cycling deal.

This price smashes the previous best price on the Kickr Core, which was $454.75 back in July, and is a huge saving of $171.51 on the usual Amazon RRP.

It may have been recently superseded by the Kickr Core 2, which costs a whopping $549, but the Kickr Core, the cheapest direct drive trainer in the Wahoo lineup, still has plenty going for it, even more so at this staggering price.

Amazon Prime Day in October, or to give it the official title, Amazon Big Deals Days, is live and runs from October 7th to 8th. The Prime Day cycling deals are already dropping, and one big discount that caught my eye was on the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar – one of the best bike computers.

The Garmin Edge 1040 Solar is discounted to just $570.99, a reduction of 24% and an overall saving of $179, which makes it the lowest price I've ever seen, beating the previous best $585.99 from the last Prime Day in July.

Solar charging is the headline feature on the 1040 Solar, and in Cyclingnews' review of the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar, tech expert Josh Ross scored it with an impressive 4.5 out of 5-star rating. It also takes the title for best battery life in our buyer's guide. Josh was mightily impressed with the performance here, noting that the solar charging added meaningful battery life to the device.

Elsewhere, as the flagship device at the time of review, the 1040 Solar delivered the goods across the board with so many features they are impossible to list in detail. However, its multi-band GNSS technology, which provides best-in-class navigation, and its performance features, including strength and stamina training, and its 3.5-inch colour touchscreen, are all key review highlights.

Amazon also has a bundled deal on the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar and the Garmin Varia RTL515, reduced by $179 from $1,149 to $970.

The Edge 1040 Solar is also reduced to $549.99 at Walmart, should you wish to shop away from Amazon. It's the best price I've seen on the Garmin 1040 Solar, and it's unlikely it'll go lower anytime soon – so I'd say, why wait? Grab it now before it sells out.

The Garmin Edge 1040 Solar and its non-solar sibling may no longer be the flagship device in Garmin's lineup of GPS computers, as it has recently been succeeded by the Garmin Edge 1050, which has no solar function and a battery life of only around 40 hours.

The 1050 is priced at $699.99, cheaper than the full-price 1040 Solar. Still, the battery performance difference is massive, and with the upgrades from the 1040 to the 1050 being fairly minimal, if you are willing to forgo a few of those features, and battery life is your most important feature, the 1040 Solar remains a solid choice, especially at this price.

The 1040 Solar's battery life is its trump card, and if you like to test the limit of battery life on your cycling tech, then you'll do well to exhaust the 1040 Solar. Garmin claims to provide up to 100 hours of battery life in battery saver mode or up to 45 hours in demanding use cases. In addition, the Power Glass solar charging will add up to 42 minutes per hour in battery saver mode and up to 20 minutes per hour in demanding use cases (assuming continuous 75,000 lux conditions during daytime riding).

This deal is currently only available in the US, but below are all the best Garmin Edge 1040 Solar and Edge 1040 deals in your territory.

According to experts, the international supplements market is a 485 billion dollar industry. It spans a wide spectrum from certified snake oil to genuinely health- or performance-enhancing products that can literally save lives.

Products like iron supplements for anaemics live at one end of the spectrum, and until I see evidence on the contrary, I'm putting these 'salt water sachets' and these placebo pills, the latter of which literally promises 'no active ingredients', at the other.

And while there's a lot of good stuff going on in the performance nutrition space, as I'll explain below, there's no denying that premium brands demand high prices for their products.

This is where I come in with a solution that will set you back a fraction of the cost.

"I don't use supplements..."

As a cyclist, you might think that supplements don't really apply to you. You're not trying to get swole in the gym with your preworkout pump or your creatine monohydrate, and you're too scared of gaining weight to take a protein shake (which is wrong, but I'll save that lecture for another piece).

You may have heard that the pros are experimenting with bicarb and beta alanine, but you're quite happy to avoid unscheduled toilet stops and pins and needles on your face.

But I'd argue you're wrong. I'd argue that energy drinks, gels, and bars all fall into the category of supplementation. And I'm willing to bet that the majority of people reading this have, at some time through their life on a bike, trialled all three.

Energy spenergy

The problem with any of these products is that they're rarely cheap.

And although it was once palatable (metaphorically), given most recommended drinking around 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrate per hour, nowadays brands are suggesting 90 grams for optimum performance, the literature is suggesting as much as 120g per hour, and pro athletes are going as high as 200g per hour.

Not only has inflation bumped prices up, but you now need to get through twice as much of it as before, maybe even more.

Carbs = fuel

The literature I mentioned above is led by knowledgeable performance nutritionists such as Asker Jeukendrup, Tim Podlogar, Sam Impey and James Morton, who have all worked (or still work) with WorldTour pro teams.

Their findings have helped transform cycling away from its traditional views that feared the soft bit in the middle of a loaf of bread, toward a more modern approach that provides your body with the fuel it needs.

They've also found that the once-accepted limit of 60g per hour could be bumped up to 90g, 108g, and now higher again, using different ratios of different types of sugar, and a period of 'gut training'.

The glucose:fructose ratio

Almost all energy drinks are made using glucose, usually in the form of fast-burning dextrose or the slightly-slower-but-still-fast-burning maltodextrin.

The problem is that, according to the literature, your body's ability to transport that sugar to the muscles is capped at around 60g per hour, because there's only so much glucose the 'Glut1' transporter can move.

However, a different transporter called glut5 works independently to transport fructose, so by adding this different sugar into the mix, you could process more per hour, and thus burn more energy without blowing up (hitting the wall, bonking, etc).

The original understanding was that this allows you to add a further 30g to the mix, creating a 2:1 ratio (60g glucose, 30g fructose). Later tests revealed the ratio might actually be closer to 1:0.8 (60g glucose, 48g of fructose).

The latest theory is that this is highly individual, and a new company called ExoAnalytics has developed a test that shows how many grams you are able to oxidise (and therefore use) yourself.

That aside, though, riders are continually experimenting with more, pushing both glucose and fructose higher and higher, with 2025 Unbound Gravel winner Cameron Jones reportedly eating 190g per hour (for 9 hours), and former Ineos Grenadiers man and Ironman superstar Cameron Wurf knocking back 200g per hour, or 28 gels across a four-hour ride.

I can't afford this

If you were to fuel a nine-hour ride at 190g per hour, using this SIS Beta Fuel (which has 80g carbs per sachet in that 1:0.8 ratio), you'd need 22 sachets.

At its recommended retail price of £39.99 / $45.00 for 15 packs, that works out at £2.66 / $3.00 per pack, and a total of £58.65 / $66.00. For one ride.

Admittedly, that's a very extreme case, but even if you rode for four hours at 100g per hour, something a lot of amateurs will be doing most weekends, that's £13.33 / $15.00 per ride, or £3.33 / $3.75 per hour.

This isn't to say brands are ripping you off. Brands like SIS and Maurten invest in research that furthers the science of fuelling athletic performance, and although you mightn't like that you're indirectly paying for research that has no bearing on your four-hour Sunday club ride, it's an expense that at least furthers the sport we all love.

Secondly, these brands also have laws to abide by and FDA rules to adhere to. Even outside of legislative overheads, they'll have business ones too. All of that comes at a cost, and sadly, that cost must be passed on to you.

The solution

Table sugar, also known as sucrose, is a 1:1 ratio of glucose and fructose.

That aforementioned pack of SIS Beta Fuel works out at £33.32 / $37.50 per kilo. Meanwhile a 1kg bag of table sugar from the supermarket is around £1.00 / $2.00.

A 500g bag (or similar 16oz for USA readers) of dextrose or maltodextrin (glucose to you and me) is around £4.00 / $5.00 on Amazon.

With that, you've got 1.5kg of 2:1 energy drink for around £5.00 / $7.00. That's £3.33 / $4.66 per kilogram, or 33 pence or 46 cents per hour, fuelling at 100g per hour.

And if you adjust the ratio to 1:0.8, you end up even better off, although when doing this myself, I often don't even bother adding the extra dextrose and enjoy a 100g-per-hour ride using pure table sugar at just 10 pence / 20 cents per hour.

I'll occasionally throw in some electrolyte tabs from Precision Hydration on longer or hotter days, and I'll flavour it with some lime juice, but all in, you're looking at an energy drink that costs you around a 10th of the overall price, with flavours you can mix and match as you wish.

As I write this, it's the tail end of a four-day Amazon Prime Day event, and in the UK at least, there is an ongoing heatwave. I am planning a very long ride tomorrow, and so have electrolytes on the brain, and as such, trawled Amazon to see what was available.

For more conventional athletes, there are products like the Styrkr electrolyte tablets on offer, and for convenience on the bike, they are hard to beat and are currently on sale.

However, curiosity got the better of me and I searched for deals on single-serving pickles, which have long been seen at hot, long endurance races like Unbound to give athletes a quick hit of salts.

Madly though, I also stumbled upon what is perhaps my favourite deal of the whole Amazon Prime Day: Dill pickle freeze pops.

From what I can tell, they are simply frozen dill pickle brine, and claim to help "prevent and treat muscle cramps", and I can believe there's some truth in that, as well as helping to cool you down, though the packaging also states you can enjoy them frozen or unfrozen... 'Enjoy' might be the wrong term for slurping down warm pickle brine, but still.

They are on sale if you want to try your hand, and if I were in the States, not the UK, I'd be sorely tempted to give them a try, but alas, I cannot find them this side of the pond.

Freezing your nutrition isn't unheard of, and when I was at the Vuelta a España last year, I saw riders warming up while slurping frozen energy gels. Maybe my best bet is to simply buy some ice lolly moulds and a big jar of pickles and try my hand at making my own...

The days of thrashing away on a mini-pump for me have long departed. With the amount of cycling tech available these days, I prefer to let electric power help me out when the dreaded puncture inevitably hits.

The best electric bike pumps are now brilliant little devices, lightweight and compact – easily popped into your cycling jersey or favourite saddle bag. They've come a long way in recent times, and are by far the simplest way to inflate road tyres and gravel tyres.

Amazon Prime Day has been running all week, but ends at midnight on 11th July. However, if you're quick, you can still grab yourself a cycling deal. One that caught my eye was on one of the best bike pumps – the Cycplus AS2 Pro, which has a spot in our buyers guide as the easiest mini pump to use. I'd advise moving quickly on this, though, because Prime Day is ending tonight at midnight, and although some deals may continue, there's no guarantee the Cycplus deals will last. The best tubeless tyres and rims generally mean punctures are less frequent, but they do still occur, or if you're like one of my riding buddies (you know who you are), almost every single ride, sometimes more than once. I've witnessed him pumping away on many occasions and decided that it's no longer for me.

I chatted to my CyclingNews tech experts and did some research on the best electric pumps on the market. The Cycplus range is up there as some of the best available, and when a previous Amazon deal came up, I grabbed mine. However, this current deal is even better, and the cheapest I've seen on this particular model.

There are a few drawbacks to be aware of when using any electric pumps. They can get quite hot when using them, so you need to be aware when using inner tubes with plastic valves, because they can melt. If you still use inner tubes (I don't), most models come with an additional valve to alleviate this.

They have to be charged too, so remember to do that before heading out, and also check the waterproofing of any model.

In my opinion, the positives outweigh those negatives, and the convenience of use, precise pressure levels (especially with this model and its LED screen), and the lack of effort when it's required are all box tickers for me.

Welcome to the final day of the four-day-long Amazon Prime Day sale. The sale ends at midnight tonight, so today marks the last chance to get a deal, on the assumption that prices will rise again this weekend.

So far we've uncovered dozens of excellent discounts. We've unearthed loads of best-ever prices on Garmin bike computers, plus some great deals on its main rival, with deals on all Wahoo Elemnt models. Hammerhead joined the party too with a cut-price Karoo, and Tom highlighted a deal on the iGPSport BiNavi, which was already a value competitor to the big brands before its discount.

Amazon Prime Day: Are the cycling deals any good?

Yes! So far we've seen a good number of best-ever prices on certain products. There isn't the spread of deals that you might find during a big event like Black Friday but we've seen plenty of big discounts this week.

Now is a good time to buy many of the items included here, but with the caveat that it's only a good deal if you actually need the product in the first place.

How we find the best cycling deals

There are several sale events each year that we cover, but we don't use AI, robots, monkeys with typewriters, nor Santa's elves to compile this content, it's all done by members of the Cyclingnews tech team.

This year, that includes Josh Croxton, Tom Wieckowski and Paul Brett. Each of whom has years of experience writing tech-related bike content for websites and magazines.

Put simply, we trawl the sales looking for products that feature in our buying guides, then if we find a good price, we cross-check it against the rest of the internet.

We use tools to help us. Primarily, we use the strangely-titled but eminently useful CamelCamelCamel tool to check historical pricing. We also use The Wayback Machine to check former listings where necessary.

More pertinently, though, we use our years of experience testing cycling products (bikes, clothing, accessories, tech and so on) to give us a good understanding of what products are good, and which are bad, because no matter how cheap or heavily discounted something is, it's not a 'good deal' if the product is worthless.

We then combine that insight with our knowledge of the industry. We know which brands are popular and which are not. We sometimes know which are overstocked (and likely to want to discount heavily). We also know if a brand is set to launch a new model, and thus might want to clear out the older model to make room for the new one.

More than anything, we simply use our understanding of which products are available on the market in each category, what they're priced at, and which of them are the best. If product A is marginally better than product B, but product B becomes significantly cheaper in sales, we make a human judgment on which to recommend. If we still think product A is worth the extra spend, then we'll say that, and likewise Vice Versa. Sometimes we might simply give you the facts and let you make that judgment because only you can truly decide what the best product is for your needs and your budget.

If we find a product that meets the criteria of good, a good price, and is not available cheaper elsewhere, then it gets added. If it is available cheaper elsewhere, we might still include it if it's a good offer, but we'll always share the better price too.

Apple AirTags were launched back in 2021. The small circular gadgets from Apple use Bluetooth and the Apple Find My Phone network (sorry, Android users) to help you locate whatever item the AirTag is attached to. Long story short, they are small, affordable GPS trackers for your stuff.

This makes them perfect for cyclists who are regularly travelling with bikes and kit, like my colleague Graham, whose bags recently went missing, an example of someone who would have benefited from having an AirTag in his luggage.

Bike theft is also a huge problem, especially in certain major cities across the world, and the prospect of having a bike stolen fills any cyclist with dread.

As previously reported by Cycling Weekly, a UK-based journalist managed to relocate his stolen, and rather expensive, cargo bike using an Apple AirTag he had hidden in the frame.

Without it, he likely wouldn't have seen his bike ever again.

With the Metropolitan Police in London unable to help straight away, Jim Waterson, who runs the London Centric, ended up turning his crime-fighting experience into a true story piece for his website.

Waterson describes on his website how he managed to track down his stolen bike to a certain location and, luckily, found it being transferred to a car and reclaimed it. The one caveat to make here is that if you aren't sure about the situation you're heading into to re-take your pride and joy, err on the side of caution and alert the authorities.

Of his ordeal and ultimate triumph, Waterson had the following to say:

"Ten minutes after I left the building, the bike was on the move. First, the AirTag pinged at another block of flats the other side of a park. I ran over there but was unable to find anything. Then it pinged one final time, a further 500 metres away.

"The signal was weak, but it was all I had to go on. I sprinted down the road, into a dark car park, and saw my family's bicycle leaning against a wall. Next to it was a man, dressed all in black with his face covered in a ski mask, standing by a black hatchback car with the boot open. He appeared to be getting ready to load the bicycle into the boot.

"High on adrenaline and shaken by the situation, I blurted out the words: 'I’m terribly sorry, but that’s my bicycle.'"

Thankfully, the person in possession of the bike handed it over without issue and man and machine were reunited. A win for the humble AirTag.

It's a true-life example of how useful an AirTag can be, being able to pinpoint your lost or stolen items is something that would have been scarcely believable a few years ago.

For less than $30 / £30, you can keep tabs on your bike at all times.

I’ve got enough Amazon Prime Days (and Black Friday shifts) under my belt now to know that there are a few regular occurrences. AirPods are almost always reduced to some degree, and so it’s a great time to wait to buy a pair if you’ve been eyeing a set up. In fact. Apple’s flagship set of in-ear buds, the AirPods Pro 2, are currently on offer, and if you have your heart set on them, then it really is quite a good time to stick ‘em in ya basket.

However, to throw a spanner in the works, the competitor earbuds from Google, the Pixel Buds Pro 2, are also reduced, with both sets coming in at a similar price. Which one is best for you, and which would you buy, if any, this Amazon Prime Day?

Luckily for you, I have been testing the Pixel Buds Pro 2 for about four months now – in fact they are in my ears right now blasting Belgian techno – and my partner has been a staunch AirPods Pro 2 enjoyer for as long as I’ve known her, so naturally this is personal.

The deals are better in the States, but in both the UK and the USA the price for both options is comparable so I've included both regions.

Which should I buy?

I appreciate that this will most likely come down to which ecosystem you've built your tech life around. AirPods will work more seamlessly with iPhones, and while they will work with Android devices, you won't get automatic in-ear detection, Siri integration, and spatial audio. Likewise, you can connect the Pixel Buds to your iPhone, but you'll only get the basic Bluetooth features and won't be able to access any of the in-app customisation features.

That being said, I actually think there's very little between the two options. At present, both are at a similar price in both the UK and the USA. They both have transparency, great noise cancellation, conversation detection, and the ability to find them remotely.

If I had to land one one side rather than the other I'd be inclined to suggest the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are the better option, especially as a cyclist who does big days out, as the battery life is nearly double that of the AirPods – 6hrs versus 12hrs, with active noise cancellation switched off, that swing it for me!

If you are looking for a GPS computer, it's pretty hard to look past Garmin. Although Garmin's vast range includes some of the best bike computers on the market, the entry-level devices are still packed with advanced features.

The Garmin Edge 540 is a prime example of this; it's loaded with riding, navigation and training features to help you get the most from your rides. Whether you're looking for detailed mapping or customised training features that adapt based on your performance and recovery, the Garmin Edge 540 has you covered. This little workhorse shares many features with more premium models like the Garmin Edge 1040 (which is also on sale), and it probably covers the needs of 99% of riders.

For aspiring riders or those who just want a reliable device, the Garmin Edge 540 is a bit of a no-brainer choice. For those in the market, the Amazon Prime Day shopping event may seem like the perfect opportunity to get your hands on a great GPS computer. It's currently discounted by 15% however, I urge you not to rush into a purchase as I have found an alternative option that is much better.

Exercise bikes aren't to be confused with the best smart bikes. Smart bikes are generally more advanced and designed to work with virtual indoor cycling apps like Zwift. The best smart trainers are another option, although these require you to attach your outdoor bike to the trainer before you can ride.

Tubeless tyre tech has made punctures a lot less common – unless you’re like my colleague Tom who staunchly refuses to go tubeless on the road – but at some point in every cyclist’s life there comes a time when you’ll have to take a tyre off a rim, and for that you’ll need a pair of tyre levers. In fact, along with a spare inner tube, a mini pump, and a multi tool, it’s only of the few things you really should never leave the house for a ride without.

Given it's currently Amazon Prime Day (or days) you're probably searching for a sweet sweet discount on a set of levers for your bike. If that's you, I'm here to help. Last year I spent some time testing a load of different levers, putting them through their paces mounting some famously difficult tyres (Challenge Strada, Continental Gatorskins, and the older Continental GP5000), and on the whole most were pretty rubbish.

Tubeless tyres and rims generally have a tighter fit, meaning the tyres are harder to get on and off, and so tyre levers have to be stronger than they used to be. The Muc-Off Rim Stix are the only levers I use now because they’re the only lever that has yet to let me down. I’ve bent the venerable Pedros out of shape pretty quickly on some, I’ve snapped many many others, and some are so flimsy you can bend them just by looking at them.

These Muc-Off ones are strong, have a sharp enough lever end to get right under stubborn tyres, and while they’re a little bigger than most that also means better leverage. They aren’t on offer, but they’re honestly the only levers I’ll ride with nowadays and I’ve spent my hard earned cash on them myself. It’s the same reason our buyer’s guide for the best tyre levers contains only one product, and it’s the reason I packed a seat when we tested road tyres in the lab; I swapped something like 35 tyres that day and they didn’t bat an eye.

How much did they pay you to write this?

I can hear the comments section firing up as we speak… “This is clearly sponsored!!” I’m sure you’ll rage, but no, Muc-Off didn’t slip me a backhander to write this.

All I’ll say is this: They cost as little as £5 at full retail price. If I’m right (which I always am) you’ve spent a fiver on a very good set of levers that will handle the toughest tyre/rim combinations. If I’m wrong (I’m not) you’ve either only wasted five pounds, or you ignore me totally and get yourself a cheaper, flimsy set of levers that may snap or bend when you need them most.

The Garmin Fenix 8 represents the very best of the best when it comes to the best cycling smartwatches. It's Garmin's flagship multisport GPS smartwatch, and comes loaded with so many features, it's almost easier to list what it can't do than what it can.

It also makes the Fenix 8 one of the most expensive smartwatches on the market, and therefore rarely discounted. For Amazon Prime Day, there is $100 off the 43mm, 47mm and 51mm versions of the Garmin Fenix 8 in its various Amoled and Solar touchscreen options.

It takes the top-of-the-line Garmin Fenix 8 Amoled down to just $999.99, from the list price of $1,099.99, and that's one of the cheapest we've seen this year. However, with the Prime Day week ending on 11 July, we'd expect this price not to last, so we would suggest grabbing it while you can.

I love putting on my white Oakley Radars before a summer ride, having given them a clean and polish the night before, it just looks and feels bling.

Mathieu van der Poel reminds me of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Stick with me, Cyclingnews readers, I'll explain.

Ronaldo transformed himself from a dazzling winger, with a penchant for stepovers and tricks over the final result, into an all-time great with an incredible goal-scoring record.

Mathieu van der Poel has never favoured style over substance. But the crazy long-range attacks are gone. When he's in form and has targeted a race, the current leader of this year's Tour de France is lethal, with the power and confidence to deliver, almost every time.

He rode at his limit over the punchy climbs at the end of Stage 2, and this is the impressive bit, then confidently sat on the front around the final right-hand bend at the finish before delivering his sprint to win the stage.

If you're new to the indoor training scene, then there are plenty of reasons to consider the Kickr Core as your first smart trainer purchase, and for most people, it'll most likely be the only trainer you'll ever need.

It has hundreds of Amazon reviews, with an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars, and 81% of reviews give it top marks. Accuracy is excellent at +/- 2%, which means it falls well within the requirements for racing on platforms such as Zwift, should you get bitten by the online cycling racing bug.

If you just wish to ride or follow occasional training blocks, then the ERG and SIM modes provide a reliable and realistic ride experience. Wahoo doesn't often do big sales, even in the face of Amazon Prime Day or Black Friday.

Most of the year, its website includes a small selection of 'reconditioned' smart trainers with a modest discount, as well as a handful of merchandise.

And when Wahoo does decide to get involved with the Prime Day bike sales, it's usually with a solitary product.

Amazon Prime Day week has begun, running from July 8th to 11th, so expect lots of deals flying around during the massive online shopping event. Amazon Prime Day is best known for its deals on electronics, so it should come as no surprise that there are some great discounts on earphones.

If you're looking for an audio accomplishment to your indoor training or just some music as you go through your day, one Amazon Prime Day deal that caught our eye was this discount on Apple's AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation earphones.

These aren't to be confused with the standard AirPods 4, choosing the version with Active Noise Cancellation is worth it if you plan on using them in noisy environments, like riding on a smart trainer with a fan blowing at your face. I have found Apple's noise cancellation is very effective, with three modes allowing you to tailor how much background noise you want to hear. There is also a voice awareness mode which lowers the volume and enhances voices when you start speaking.

In my opinion, the Active Noise Cancellation is well worth the extra outlay, but there's another handy feature that sets it apart. The Active Noise Cancellation version also features Find My technology, which works just like Apple's AirTags (there's an Amazon Prime Day AirTags deal for those too), so you can track your earphones if they go missing.

We didn't feature the AirPod 4's in our best headphones for cycling guide, instead, we opted for the AirPod Pro 2 earphones, which are also discounted for Prime Day. Truth be told, though, the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation share a lot of the top-spec features. The AirPod Pro 2 gets an extra hour of battery life, the case features MagSafe wireless charging and mini touchpads rather than buttons to skip tracks and control the volume. In my review, I noted that the S-Works Recon Lace shoes not only delivered everything you want in the best cycling shoes. They are loaded with performance features, but the laced fastening gives them a timeless aesthetic and a cool gravel bike vibe. It makes for a cycling shoe that's not only at home at a gravel race, but comfortable enough to make them a versatile bike shoe for daily rides, and even commuting.

The first thing you notice when opening up the box of the S-Works Recon is the overall uber-cool look of the shoes. The Oak Green colorway I chose gives them a classic old-school look and combined with the black laces and details gives them a perfect gravel bike vibe.

The good looks are backed up with a ton of performance features, including the one-piece Dyneema upper part of the shoe, which makes it durable and resistant to damage like cuts and scuffs. It's also perforated across the forefoot to provide breathability and the holes are small enough to cope with the occasional muddy puddle. The Recon has extra protection in the form of a thick rubber toe cap at the front and a stiff, hard plastic heel cup at the rear.

Like most Specialized cycling shoes they benefit from the Specialized Body Geometry treatment, which includes three main features designed to enhance comfort. The Longitudinal Arch prevents arch collapse and can be paired with custom footbeds. The 1.5mm Varus Wedge raises the inside edge of the foot for better knee and hip alignment, while the Metatarsal Button lifts and separates the bones of the forefoot, reducing hot spots and numbness.

The only negative for me, and what stopped them getting the perfect score, was the exposed carbon footplate around the cleat, it scuffed quite easily during testing while walking on rough ground, but at this price, it's a fairly minor niggle.

As an essential piece of cycling tech for a cyclist, a bike computer comes packed with user-friendly functionality, and the Garmin Edge 1040 is one of the best, especially at this massively discounted price.

It will track all the ride data you need – plus it pairs easily with all your cycling sensors, like heart rate monitors, power meters, and rearview radar devices, including the Garmin Varia RTL515 or Varia RCT715.

The Garmin Edge 1040 may no longer be the flagship device in Garmin's lineup of GPS computers, as it has recently been succeeded by the Garmin Edge 1050 – which comes with a whopping price tag of $699.99. However, the upgrades from the 1040 to the 1050 are fairly minimal considering the price difference. If you are willing to forgo a few of the new features – such as the brighter screen, Garmin Pay, and the digital bell – I think the 1040 remains a solid choice.

The 1040's battery life is claimed to be 35 hours, which is quite impressive for a non-solar Garmin, with the Garmin 1040 Solar extending its capacity to 45 hours.

The 3.5-inch colour touchscreen offers numerous features focused on fitness and performance. Key highlights include strength and stamina training, along with a built-in program that reminds you if you miss a workout, simplifying your training schedule planning.
