James Hay hit the top of the podium

Report by Stefan Wyman

Round 4 of the National Trophy held at Mallory Park, Leicestershire on Sunday saw Stephen Roach (James Hay RT) claim top spot in the Under 23 race.

It was the first time Stephen has won the Under 23 race, in this his first season in the category since moving up from the junior category.

The race was again a very muddy affair and the under 23 podium contenders, changed places throughout the race. Stephen managed to move through to the lead with a lap to go and was able to hold off the competition for this first National Trophy win. The win still leaves Stephen in 2nd place in the overall standing with one round to go.

After a terrible two weeks for Helen Saunders (James Hay RT) in which she has been hit by a cold and then a bout of sickness, Helen rediscovered her health and her form by claiming 3rd place in the National Trophy. Having taken 2nd place in the early laps, Helen through down the gauntlet to Victoria Wilkinson (SIS). However Victoria managed to pull the lead back and ended up taking 2nd place behind the seemingly untouchable Isla Roundtree.

Helen now lies in 3rd place in the overall series and seems to be in good form to keep challenging for the podium positions in the final round of the National Trophy and National Championships to be held in January. Helen added, 'I'm just glad that I seem to be getting better. Once I'm back to full strength, I hope to be able to put in a solid challenge for the higher positions'.

The National Trophy day was rounded off when Dan Booth finished 9th in the senior race. Dan's form seems to be getting better as the weeks go on. He was with the lead group, which included national champion Roger Hammond for the early part of the race. With around 7 weeks to go until the National Championships, Dan seems to be getting things right just at the perfect pace.
