Wicks and Compton make it a clean sweep in Ohio

A perfect fall day greeted the 236 competitors and a few hundred spectators at Harbin Par for the second race of the Ohio UCI cyclo-cross double-header. Barry Wicks (Kona) and Katie Compton (Spike Shooter) measured their efforts to perfection to take the spoils of the victory from their fellow competitors. Both riders had more company with them on their way to victory than the previous days racing possibly due to a faster course that brought more group tactics into the equation.

The start of the women's Elite race had 3-time U.S. Champion Compton grabbing the hole shot, and drawing out a six-rider lead group in the first lap. Following Compton were Kelli Emmet (Giant Bicycles), Christine Walberg (Team Kenda Tire), Melissa Thomas (Team Maxxis), and the River City Bicycles duo of Sue Butler and Wendy Williams. Compton found the perfect line the first trip through the 30-meter sand section, and opened up her first gap after Emmet and Williams had some difficulties following her lead. Butler closed the gap on the downhill run into the finish, and soon after the five riders came back together again. The race stayed close until mid-way when Compton stepped on the gas and left the rest of the group fighting over the remaining podium spots. Thomas experienced some mechanical difficulties and lost touch with the chasing group, while Emmit, who was the only one able to match Compton's earlier efforts had to fight her way back through the front group after a mishap. She passed Butler for second just as she discovered her rear tyre was flat, which cost her all chances of a podium finish. Her team-mate Wendy Williams managed to muscle her way onto the podium giving the River City team something to cheer about.

After his battles with World Champion Erwin Vervecken at last week's Whitmore's UCI events, many believed that they were watching America's current top cyclo-cross racer, Barry Wicks (Kona) display once again his superiority over the competition. Wicks led the men off through the first technical section of the course, a series of off-camber trails that had everyone from 5th position back in dismounting and running around the heavily spectated area. Danish National Champion Joachim Parbo (CCV Protek) held onto the American's wheel like glue, followed by Colorado's Brandon Dwight (Boulder Cycle Sport) and another chase group of seven riders. As soon as it looked like the riders were going to be content to let Wicks walk away with it, a roar came through the crowd as Ohio Valley rider Kevin Atkisson (Texas Roadhouse) took to the front just as the lead group was breaking up. Three laps in, Wicks again took over the lead with an acceleration only matched by Parbo - leaving the rest of the group: Dwight, Tristan Schouten (Planet X), Brent Prenzlow (Alan), Ryan Leech (GPOA-Cannondale), Molly Cameron (Vanilla), Taylor Carrington (Turin-Powerbar), Steve Tilford (HRRC), and Nathan Chown (Handlebars CC-Kona Canada) to fight over the last podium position. Just as Parbo overtook Wicks for the lead, Schouten put in a strong effort to whittle down the chase group to himself, Cameron, Prenzlow, and Leech.

Wicks used a slight uphill section of double-track with two to go to to put in a serge that saw him ride clear of the Danish champion. In the last half-lap the fight was on for the final podium position behind. First it was Cameron who put in an attack in the sand, followed by Prenzlow on the following downhill sweeper to try and ride themselves of Leech. But in the end it came down to a sprint and Prenzlow who had the most in reserve, won the tight sprint for third.
