90th Tour de France - July 5-27, 2003

Tyler's triumph

The world has watched open-mouthed as Tyler Hamilton has hung in there at the Centenary Tour, writing himself into the history books by battling through the Alps and the Pyrenees with a cracked collar bone. But the last thing anyone expected was for Hamilton to execute an audacious solo escape on the Tour's last day in the mountains and add a stage win to a Tour de France that has gone from nightmare to legend for the Man from Marblehead.

Initially dropped when the hard-charging peloton split early in the stage's 48km first hour, Hamilton used the talents of his well-drilled CSC team to regain the peloton, then charged after and dropped the early breakaway. Here, then, is our pictorial tribute to a day that cycling fans will be talking about for years to come.
