Mills Sprints to win in Nebraska State Criterium Championship

By John Jr Lefler

HRRC/Maclaren/Bikesource's Adam Mills of Lawrence, Kan., outsprinted Boulder, Colo., native Mark Southard of Excel Sports to win the Nebraska State Criterium Championship Sunday in the Old Market. Mills also prevailed in the omnium competition of the two-day Omaha Race Weekend, besting teammates Steve Tilford of Topeka, Kan., who won Saturday's Dave Babcook Memorial Race, and Brian Jensen of Lawrence, Kan., who finished third in Sunday's race.

The challenging 1.2-mile course took its toll, as more than a half-dozen breakaway attempts failed to stay away during the 75-minute event. Finally, with 10 laps to go, Mills got away with Southard. "As long as you keep applying pressure, then something's going to give sooner or later," Mills said. "I was pretty tired for the sprint. It just happened that I had good position and just hit it hard enough that I was able to get by at the line."

Lincoln's Joe McWilliams successfully defended the state criterium championship he won last fall, by virtue of being the highest finishing Nebraska rider. McWilliams, riding for Team Kaos, finished sixth. "With about 10 laps to go, I knew it would come down to a field sprint, so I just tried to stay in the front and stay out of trouble," McWilliams said. Team Kaos riders won three of the nine categories: Omahan Stephen Griffin (Category 5), Lincoln's Jeremiah Grell (Category 4), and Elkhorn's Matt Farnham (juniors). Two other Team Kaos members won state titles: Lincoln's Marie Neville (women) and Steven Muhle (Category 3).
