Trek Bikes Summer series #5

Heffron Park, Maroubra, February 3, 2004

Appleyard leads home the A train

Brian Appleyard outsprinted series leader Jose Rodrigeuz to win round 5 of the Trek Bikes Summer Series in clear, but very windy conditions at Heffron Park tonight. Appleyard came around Rodrigeuz in the final 100 metres after Rodrigeuz had the early jump when team mate Stewart Campbell executed one his monster turns into the strong headwind. Rodriguez now goes seven points clear in Series pointscore for the first prize of a Trek 5500 Carbon OCLV frame.

In the intermediate sprint competition, Randwick Botany rider Mathew Lucas picked up a valuable six points in 2 sprints to go clear of David Green and Peter McDonald.

Much stronger fields this week with 70 riders split evenly between B & C grades and a strong contingent of 20 A grade riders which included most of the McGee-FdJ development squad lead by mentor Rodney McGee.

Despite the larger bunches, the strong southerly quickly took it's toll with most grades losing many of their number by the half way mark. A small crash in C grade didn't help their chances, although this didn't deter many of the girls in C grade from doing their share of the work, with Katie Brown quite happy to ride at the front.

Four laps to go and only six A grade riders left in the chase to round up a combined B & C grade group of over 30 riders. Lead by Stewart Campbell, the A grade train set about making certain of their first overall win in three weeks by grinding out some big turns to catch the lead group just before the three laps to go sprint.

It was then a matter of hang on if you can as gaps started to open up everywhere. In the finale, one last effort from the A grade podium trio of Appleyard, Rodriguez and McGee split things up even more as a small group of only six riders hit the straight for the sprint. Appleyard was very happy with his win letting out a satisfying victory punch in the air as he crossed the line, but Rodrigeuz also went home happy as the clear favourite in the Series. Peter McDonald and Mat Lucas once again had strong rides in B grade as they managed to fill fourth and fifth place overall.

Stan Genakis also showed his continued good form by claiming the first B grade spot (not in the top five) and in the battle for C grade points, Mark Robertson put his recent breakaway DQ mishap behind him to win a close sprint with Danny Iannazzo who now takes the Series lead. Duncan Markham grabbed third to stay in the hunt with Robertson only one point behind.
