Rasmussens favourites for weekend titles

By Ben Atkins

This weekend's Danish championships will take place in the town of Fåborg on the south coast of the island of Fyn, a few hundred kilometres to the west of Copenhagen. The men will race over a distance of 196.8km, consisting of 16 laps of a 12.3km circuit that features a small climb of just over 90 metres in height at around half distance.

Reigning champion Alex Rasmussen returns to defend his title, leading a 16 man strong Designa Køkken team against a largely home-based field. Probably the strongest opposition will come from the nine CSC riders in the field.

Consisting of Nicki Sørensen, Lasse Bøchmann, Michael Blaudzun, André Steensen, Lars Bak, Anders Lund, Kasper Klostergaard, Chris Anker Sørensen and Matti Breschel, all of the ProTour riders will be looking to please the team's new Danish sponsor by taking its national championship jersey. Without any team-mates, but still capable of a result against the odds is 1999 champion Frank Høj (Cofidis).

The women will do nine laps of the same circuit adding up to a total of 110.7km. 2005 winner and last year's silver medallist Dorthe Lohse Rasmussen (Swift Racing) returns to try to go one better again this year.

Rasmussen will have competition from a large domestic field and two other strong riders from the European peloton. Track specialist Trine Schmidt (Menikini-Selle Italia-Master Color) will be chasing her first national title, and 2006 champion Linda Villumsen Serup (Team Columbia) will hope to impress her team's new sponsor with a second.
